Game Debate to the Death!
Silent Hill VS Tomb Raider photo

Last week we came to the conclusion of the SNES / Sega Genesis odd debate brackets, with NBA Jam heating up and Donkey Kong Country on a banana and balloon filled rampage. Each side made their way to the semifinals by doubling their competitors' vote totals along the way, and by keeping true to that same pattern, so did the winner of last week's debate. Here is the one who came out on top:

 • Donkey Kong Country -- Winner!

This week we move on to the PlayStation odd debate brackets, with four more games battling with other games they've rarely been compared to. With Silent Hill and Tomb Raider we have two third person shooters that were just as memorable as they were frustrating to control, not to mention they both became movies many years later. However, aside from that, their genres and plots were completely different.

How will you make your decision this week? Will the action of one game separate it from the other? Did the lead role of one game trump the other game's lead character of the other gender? Or will it all come down to story and character development? It's up to you to decide!

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some PlayStation friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner and two new PS1 contendors.

Bonus Questions: Which series overall have you enjoyed more? All of the Silent Hill games, or the Tomb Raider franchise? Also, which movie did you enjoy more?

Tomb Raider (the original) was brilliant. I played the entire game through in a single sitting. Unfortunately, none of the sequels have captured the magic of the first imo.

In contrast, Silent Hill has consistently blown me away. The complexity of the characters, and the heavily emotional narratives, not to mention some of the greatest art ever to grace a game, the Silent Hill series has been a masterpiece of storytelling.

Such a shame that #5 is looking like rehashed, badly westernised SHIT.

Orao: Sorry man, but SH5 looks like one huge string of mistakes. For starters, it doesn't look like another chapter - it looks like a bastardisation of the film, which itself was a bastardisation of the game series. I mean, it's got PYRAMID HEAD in it FFS. We all love him, we all think he's one of the best villains in gaming history, but he belonged in SH2 and NOWHERE ELSE. SH5 is looking to be a terribad mash up of previous SH chapters, produced by idiots who are too thick headed to understand the subtle metaphors that have made SH such powerful narratives. Pyramid Head... /sigh

Lemme see Tomb raider which made me angry at running and jumping, when i was a kid i never completed a single level and had a francise i was completely non plused by.

Or Silent Hill one the scariest game in existence 9for me at least) with fantastic story (especially for most jap developers) and a mostly good track record.

Gotta say SH wins it for me. I mean my first experience was a free demo with MGS in which I had never played a survival horror before, you died at one point and there were ghost babies!

Tomb Raider.

I mean, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 might feel like a copy-paste job, but it strangely isn't.
1 is just right.
2 is hard as shit.
3 is big as shit.
4 is kind of boring as shit.
5 is kind of fun again. As shit.
Then something happened.
And the next thing i know lara jumps "human like". A very athletic human.

I can't get one thing out of silent hill. I don't like them. Never did.

Let's not speak of the movies.

Never cared for Tomb Raider, and Silent Hill 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. There is no contest here.

This is a tough one. I can't give an honest vote on this. I like both series a lot but I have only played two Tomb Raiders (1 and 2) and the first Silent Hill when they all first came out. Someday I'll get to SH2, and probably love it, but I feel like both of these series require a certain level of patience I just can't seem to find in me these days.

Maybe its the sluggish 3D movement that just kind of kills it for me, I dunno. My gaming tastes over the years, have gone down a different path that doesn't quite include these series like when they were first released.

Silent Hill. Silent Hill. And Silent Hill to all 3 questions.

Seems a little weird to put these games against each other.

The only tomb raider gamer I played was II, back when it came out for the PC. It blew me away.

I played silent hill 2 some years later. Awesome game, but didn't blow me away (not at least to the extent of Resident Evil 4)

Tomb Raider gets my vote.

Although I'm a huge fan of Indina-Jones-like games (adventure, exploration, tombs, etc.), Tomb Raider is not a game I enjoy enough, mostly because of the stupid camera engine and the slow-responding controls. My vote is totally for Silent Hill, excellent game, excellent graphics, excellent environment.

Bonus answers:
I liked more the single Silent Hill movie against the Tomb Raider ones. And of course, there are more enjoyable SH games than TR ones.

S.H. hands down
and I'm not just saying it because I'm a huge S.H. fanboi
but because i love everything about it the emotion, the art, the <3 music <3, and simply the game play
I love the clunky controls and some times odd translations of character but thats what makes it unique

I was never a big fan of either, but I'll go with Tomb Raider. The original game set new standards as far as the huge explorable world that it brought to consoles.

Silent Hill, hands down. I never really liked Tomb Raider aside from the fact that Ms. Croft was there.

As for the movie, never seen Silent Hill and I was too young to know any better when I watched Tomb Raider's first movie.

Something needs to be said about the first Tomb Raider and being able to simple explore without the use of much dialogue and/or human enemies (ICO anyone?)

That being said Silent Hill is Silent Hill and wins because it is Silent Hill.

I have to go with Silent Hill. I got all the games, too. I like Tomb Raider, but I'm not exactly into it like Silent Hill. Besides, the nurses in the new Silent Hill game, Homecoming, are as sexy as Lara, but in a freaky way, and I like freaky
