Last week's debate was the first of two rounds, where we argued over which of the three Paper Mario games is the best and most deserving to duel against its predecessor in round two. Obviously by this post's name and picture above, Paper Mario 64 came out on top, but it was a come from behind victory and a close fight to the end. Here are the results:
- Paper Mario 64 (44 votes) -- Winner!
- Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (31 votes)
- Super Paper Mario (8 votes)
On paper (heyo!) this looks like quite the odd fight. We have a battle between a 3D Super Nintendo game and a 2D Nintendo 64 game. It feels wrong to make the two fight, since they feel like brothers or distant cousins in the extensive Famicon family tree blood line, but we don't call this Game Debate to the Death for nothing. Only one can survive, and it's up to you and your merciless friends to decide.
Which game did you enjoy more, and why? Was the gameplay in one more exceptional than the other? Did you find the story more exciting with one of them? Or was it the side characters that's the deciding factor? Give it some serious thought, cast your votes, get some Paper Mario pals to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.
Bonus Question: When the hell will we see more of Luigi?! After Super Mario Galaxy, what do you want to see next from the original Mario series?

And Luigi's Mansion: Waggle Edition will probably be next.

Paper Mario 64.
My reason:
Because it's just a kiddy Mario game, but it was far more fun to play through than just about every Final Fantasy RPG game I've ever played. Sure, Super Mario RPG was badass, but the story and characters and dialogue and LEVELS (they were so fucking awesome for being so fucking simple) were far more exciting and enjoyable in Paper Mario 64. So much cleverness and ingenuity.
Bonus Question:
Someone last week suggested making the next game Paper Luigi, with his side quests he performed while Mario was off saving the world in Paper Mario 1000 year door. I think that would be a great game if they meshed the two storylines well to show that Luigi actually helped make Mario's life easier by working in the background.
Just kidding this is the internet. SUPER MARIO RPG BITCHES!
BONUS QUESTION:
Bowser kills Luigi, first Mario game rated M comes out.
SMRPG SMRPG SMRPG SMRPG SMRPG SMRPG SMRPG SMRPG SMRPG SMRPG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Plus Bowser has a weapon in which he picks Mario up and throws him at the enemy. Pure win.
IT'S SIMPLY THE BEST BETTER THAN ALL THE REST
-Kazoo
The addition of Mario elements on an RPG is just fantastic, jump, stomp, fire flower pellets, etc.
The countless easter eggs, specially the one where you go behind a wall and turn into the original Mario from SMB1 with the original music i think. That scene just changed my life, and that´s why SMRPG wins.
Those 2 words are the reason that Super Mario RPG wins.
Nothing more.
NO CONTEST The Paper Mario games pale in comparison.
I liked it better than Super Mario RPG.
Can't really tell why, but Paper Mario is better.
Also, I sold my SNES and all my games for an N64, including this game and Earthbound. I haven't forgiven myself since.
Mario RPG FTFW for the fuckin win
My vote then goes to Paper Mario 64. I'm drawn to it's better sense of humour.
Likable, new, and interesting characters. Interesting world design that took the classic Mushroom Kingdom and made it much more. Classic enemies and variations over the place. Amazing graphics for its' time. And to add it all up, a plot that involved an interesting villain that wasn't Bowser.
I love SMRPG, and haven't been able to get through any of the Paper Mario games because they all pale in comparison.
You gotta love comments like these "I know absolutely nothing about what I am voting for, but I still feel that I should take a say in the matter and my voice should carry as much weight as someone making an informed decision"
You're so 16 years old it hurts.
The music alone was amazing!
Booster... Axem Rangers... ahhhhh <3
I would be willing to bet any person here voting Paper Mario is from the PSX-Gen (or N64 gen, in this case). Super Mario RPG is just that good, one of those few games that deserves every bit of hype it gets. I can't possibly see someone that has been gaming since the SNES days or longer voting for Paper Mario.
