Game Debate to the Death!<br>Excitebike VS Punch-Out!! photo

Last week's PS2 platformer debate brought out various different opinions from readers, with a healthy amount of fan support from all sides. While there was one clear winner, there was a vicious fight for second place, with a single deciding vote preventing it from finishing as a tie. Here are the close results:

  • 1st: Ratchet & Clank series (42 votes) -- Winner!
  • 2nd: Sly Cooper series (22 votes)
  • 3rd: Jak & Daxter series (21 votes)

This week, not only do I feel like starting some retro debates, but I'd also like to rekindle an element of these debates we haven't visited in a while. I used to enjoy debates between two games that aren't very similar. Discussions that force you to think outside the box, consider all the pros and cons of each game, and compare and contrast them in a way that really makes you think about why you did or didn't enjoy a certain game.

With debates like these, it's not good enough to just vote with your gut -- it forces you to be more analytical and think like a game designer. It's my opinion that you should be able to compare any two games to each other no matter how drastically different they are in their nature.

For tonight we'll start off simple though, with Excitebike and Punch-Out!! -- two sports games with completely different gameplay styles. Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some NES friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner and an even odder Retro debate matchup.

Bonus Question: What other NES retro games would you like to see fight to the death in a debate?

Exctiebike, Punchout was just a little to frustrating for me ;)

As for the other two retro games: Super Mario Bros. 2 (American Version) vs. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. The battle of the outcasts of the two series.

Punch Out, definitely. First rhythm game I fell in love with. Time to make a new one Nintendo.

Excitebike was fun, but very shallow and the track editor failed from the lack of a battery backup or even password system to save your creations.

This is tough. I'm gonna go with excite bike. It basically came down to which game I spent the most time with. While I have fond memories of both, I spent more time with excitebike. First level editor I can remember seeing.

Punch-Out

It has more character with more memorable moments and epic fights that stick in your mind forever.

Remember the first time you managed to knock down King Hippo? Did you shit yourself the first time you managed to stop Bald Bull's charge? Piston Honda provided knock out drag out wars TWICE in the game. The Great Tiger almost made me cry when he first spun around in circles and then pummeled the shit out of my face. I was only 7 years old you prick!

What memories does Excitebike bring? Jumping high and crashing a lot. Yay. Crawl your ass back to that bike by pounding buttons. I'm sorry but both experiences just aren't even comparable for me.

Punch-Out

There's nothing quite like meeting the digital doomsday machine that is 8-bit Mike Tyson.

You blink your eyes: KO'd.

You hear your phone ringing: sucker punched to the chin.

You take a breath: Boom! Your feet are in the air.

Point is, Punch-Out will literately test your hand/eye coordination skills.

If not, just vent frustration by punting your neighbor's dog over the fence for a field goal. I got 20 yds so far.

I have to vote for Excitebike, just because I never really got into Punch Out, and Excitebike was unique in that it was one of the first games I can remember (Mach Rider was another) that had customizable tracks.

Excitebike. I still go back and play both games all the time but I feel like I play Excitebike more often.
