Game Debate to the Death!<br>Donkey Kong Country VS NBA Jam photo

Last week we witnessed two of the most played Sega Genesis games go toe-to-toe on the court, and the battle spilled into overtime before a clear winner was decided. Right from the start, NBA Jam took a monstrous lead, but Aladdin just as quickly tied the game back up, only to fall far behind once again by half-time. Just as I thought the debate was over, Aladdin rallied with a wall of votes and tied things up to force the game into overtime. Sadly, the game was one-sided from then on, here are the results:

  • NBA Jam (40 votes) -- "He's heating up!"
  • Aladdin (21 votes)
This week we move on to the SNES & Sega Genesis odd debates finals. In one corner we have an adroit ape with quite the appetite, and in the other corner we have a backboard-breaking behemoth who's almost on fire with momentum. Will the primate powerhouse its way to the trophy, or will the famous sports game take the gold? It's up to you to decide!

Looking back many years ago, which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some SNES and Genesis friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner, as well as a whole new three-round debate as we enter the PlayStation brackets of odd debates.

Bonus Questions: If they made another Donkey Kong Country or NBA Jam game for the current generation of consoles, what would you like to see the most and least from each game?

NBA Jam was easily the second best game ever put on Sega. The first being Rock and Roll Racing by Blizzard.

DKC was the most amazing game for its time. I spent hours trying to find all secrets in it when I was a kid. It gets my vote.

I'd love to see another NBA Jam game made for current gen consoles, since I'm sure Mario Basketball with crazy fireball dunks isn't far off, so they might as well beat them to it. It would be fun if the bouncing of the ball motions was a little intuitive and free-styled like how Tony Hawk and Skate games handle controls with motion sensitive controls.

As for DKC on Wii, you could probably play as DK with the joystick in your left hand and then control Diddy Kong at the same time with the Wiimote in your right hand. You could aim where you want Diddy to jump or where you want DK to throw him, etc. Riding around on Rhino mounts in 3D could be fun if the levels actually felt like a cartoon version of real jungles and safaris. The underwater levels would probably be the best though, I think DKC in 3d has a lot of potential. A lot of potential that its first attempt on N64 did not achieve.

VOTE: DKC! Because it stands the test of time much better.

NBA Jam still gets my vote.

I was watching the history of Donkey Kong this morning. They were talking about this one interview with Miyamoto about his thoughts on Donkey Kong Country, and he pretty much said it was crap. He complained about how it was pretty much a collect-a-thon and that American gamers will buy anything that looks halfway pretty. I thought that was hilarious.

So for the new DKC, keep the good platforming, less collecting.

For the new NBA Jam, keep everything; the crazy cameos, insane dunks, 8-point hotspots.

I actually remember playing NBA Jam at a friends house several times. Probably the first (and only) sports game I liked.

DKC I remember much more clearly, probably because I actually play it regularly to this day. So yeah, DKC kind of wins this round. Sure, it's a collect-a-thon, but dammit, it's a fun collect-a-thon. For all the crazy stuff in NBA Jam, you still can't trample over your opponents while riding on the back of a rhino. :D

As for what I want to see? More of the same for both. I want a full-on retro feel.

NBA Jam!

Bonus: I would say stay away from making a new NBA Jam 5 on 5, keep it 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 and stay very arcadey.

This is a good match-up. Both games revolutionized thier respective genres when they were released, and both had incredible replay value.

My vote goes to Donkey Kong Country, mainly for the fact that DKC has aged so incredibly well. Go back and try to play NBA Jam right now. You'll be lucky if you can finish a game unless you're a super-hardcore NBA Jam fan. If you go back and play DKC, you'll want to finish the entire game.

I would love to see a new Donkey Kong Country game.

The closest thing I have played to a new NBA Jam is NBA Street Homecourt, which has 3 on 3, breakdancing gamebreakers and silly silly dunks.

"Double Dribble" was one of my favorite basketball games. I use to play it for hours and hours in my NES. It was simple and fun, just like most of NES games. When SNES/Genesiscame to my life, and I knew NBA Jam, I couldn't contain my emotion. No matter the regular control, the game was a solid Melee-2vs2-basketball game. "He's on fire!" How can I forget that. There was no actual music that I could remember (except for the menu theme song and the crowd in the stadium clapping). Graphics were blurry, but you can easily recognize some of the players like Bill Clinton (excellent detail, I bet Bill should be proud to be in a basketball videogame, he he he). Multiplayer mode was fun in extreme, without rules you could be a jerk against your friend, IT WAS LEGAL!

My vote's for NBA JAM.

NBA JAM:
+ The most: "Digitalized" characters (the spirit of the game).
- The least: the horrible statistics "slect your player" screen.

Donkey Kong Country:
+ The most: More stages variety.
- The least: Kiddy Kong.

Donkey Kong Country. They're both fun games to go back to, but DKC was a much fuller experience, while NBA Jam could be made into a small Flash game and still be almost identical.

NBA Jam. Two player, and I had many times where one of us (either me or a friend, usually me) would win by a point. DK didn't have that.

This one is difficult, a tie really. I loved to play DKC by myself, but NBA Jam was one of the most fun multiplayer games in existence at the time...ah....um...

NBA Jam. Only because I rebought it recently for 50 cents.

Gotta go w/ DKC here, but it was a tough sell in this case. I have so many fond memories of half-court dunks, shouts of 'he's on fire!' and playing as mascots, and while those things were rad, in the end NBA Jam is just a sports game.

DKC has withstood the test of time in my book.

I pick DKC. And my idea for DKC4, that I've had since the 5th grade, is that it should involve time travel. It would be like DKC meets Turtles In Time. So one world would be a dinosaur world, and the kremlings would dress like cavemen and the boss would be a T-Rex or something. And then another world could be a futuristic world where the kremlings look like spacemen and the boss is a big robot or something.

The last world would have a Transylvania theme, and the final boss world be Count K. Roolula, who is K. Rool as a vampire for some reason.

The main character would be Kiddy Kong and his partner would be a new character named Hero Kong, who wears a cape and can glide like Knuckles in Sonic 3.

And there would be new animal buddies based on the various time periods, like a raptor from the dinosaur world and maybe a dragon from a medieval world.
