Game Debate to the Death!<br>Bubble Bobble VS Punch-Out!! photo

Last week we started off round two with a wall of one-sided votes, and as the hours went by, not much changed. While I was a huge fan of Paperboy back in the day, I'm not going to lie, it felt great to see Bubble Bobble come out swinging and bubble shooting like a champ. The only question left is how it will do in this week's epicly odd debate battle. Here are the results from last week:

  • Bubble Bobble (71 votes) -- Winner!
  • Paperboy (9 votes)

This week we move into the NES finals with two games competing that couldn't be more different from each other. One game only has one level and towering sized sprites, while the other has literally hundreds of levels filled with feeble foes.

Don't forget -- the point of these odd debates is not to just vote with your gut -- it forces us to be more analytical and think like a game designer. It gives us unique discussions that force everyone to think outside the box, consider all the pros and cons of each game, and compare and contrast them in a way that really makes us think about why we did or didn't enjoy a certain game.

Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some NES friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the results. After a winner is decided we'll move onto another console and another three rounds of odd retro debate matchups.

Bonus Question: Keep the Sega Genesis and SNES odd debate matchup suggestions coming!

I actually played both this week. Punch-Out hands down. Does not require a second player to enjoy.

Bubble Bobble wins easily.

I love Punch Out, it's a great NES game, but Bubble Bobble remains one of my favorite games of all time and not only because of all the happy memories of skipping school and playing it all day long with friends. It's still a blast to play, the 2-player co-op is great, and with 100+ levels it has so much packed into a small cart.

E-X-T-E-N-D, my friends.

thing about punch out is once you know the patterns, you can usually knock out each fighter in the first round in under 3 min. fun but gets old fast because its so easy.

Punch Out!

Have to vote for it. I love Bubble Bobble but there are too many fond memories of playing Punch Out! into the late hours of my childhood.

I'm gonna have to vote Bubble Bobble.

Both games had deep strategies, with PO it was about knowing each boxers fighting style and when to land the critical blows. BB was also about knowing the enemies but it threw in different level designs at the same time. I remember my friend and I playing and we got to level 89 or somewhere around there and the enemies were in little boxes at the top and you had to bubble jump all the way to the top. Right now that seems really simple, but when I was 5 that was mind blowing. Both games had really addicting music...leading to many techno remixes of both original soundtracks.

BB had a 2 player mode which is really what puts it above PO. You could get hours of entertainment by playing with a friend and letting them kill enemies and running in and stealing the rewards. You just can't beat that kind of satisfaction.

Punch Out is the Shhhitttt. I remember the first time taking out Tyson, one of the best days of my life : ) The characters were awesome, each one had their own special moves. I wish they would make a new Punch Out for the Wii.

Both are great games. BB is really fun with a friend and is a decent game in length. PO is still regarded by some to be the best boxing game of all time. When it comes down to it, BB takes the cake because playing with a bud is far more enjoyable than getting your ass handed to you by Mike Tyson or Mr. Dream (depending on the version of the game).

I'll go for Bubble Bobble.

As for Genesis/SNES, go for Shining Force 2 vs. Final Fantasy III, or Landstalker vs. Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past.
