Last week we started off round two with a wall of one-sided votes, and as the hours went by, not much changed. While I was a huge fan of Paperboy back in the day, I'm not going to lie, it felt great to see Bubble Bobble come out swinging and bubble shooting like a champ. The only question left is how it will do in this week's epicly odd debate battle. Here are the results from last week:
- Bubble Bobble (71 votes) -- Winner!
- Paperboy (9 votes)
This week we move into the NES finals with two games competing that couldn't be more different from each other. One game only has one level and towering sized sprites, while the other has literally hundreds of levels filled with feeble foes.
Don't forget -- the point of these odd debates is not to just vote with your gut -- it forces us to be more analytical and think like a game designer. It gives us unique discussions that force everyone to think outside the box, consider all the pros and cons of each game, and compare and contrast them in a way that really makes us think about why we did or didn't enjoy a certain game.
Which game do you think is better, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some NES friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the results. After a winner is decided we'll move onto another console and another three rounds of odd retro debate matchups.
Bonus Question: Keep the Sega Genesis and SNES odd debate matchup suggestions coming!
Also, on the Super NES, how about Rock and Roll Racing vs. Mario Kart?
With Bubble Bobble though, not only is there a TON of content, but it's also fun as fuck, and its characters and enemies and its AMAZZZZING last boss fight, all combine to be far more charismatic than Punch-Out's linear gameplay.
In other words ....
100s of levels > a dozen levels
Umbrella item > linear gameplay with much used cheat codes
Bubble Bobble boss > any single fight in Punch-Out!!
Oh yah, and Bubble Bobble is a 2 player games. TKO, baby.
MY VOTE: Bubble Bobble!!!
Honestly, only a few games come close to bubble bobble for fun and they would be games like:
Super Mario Kart
Puyo Puyo/ puyo pop
Worms
Syndicate
Smash TV
Simcity & simcity 2000
sensible soccer
Puzzle Bobble/ Bust A Move
Popuous 1 & 2
Harvest Moon
Cannon Fodder
Arkanoid
If it weren't odd debates, it should've been Bubble Bobble VS Bust a Move.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers VS Boogerman.
Compare these:
SNES: Actraiser II
Genesis: Toe Jam & Earl
Also, for EPIC matchup . . . SUNSET RIDERS vs. TMNT IV: TURTLES IN TIME!
Bonus: Golden Axe vs. Altered Beast vs. Streets Of Rage 2. A triple fight to the death!
Sunset Riders vs Turtles in Time. The 2 best multiplayer beat'em'ups
Butt looking at both game critically Punch Out has awesome game mechanic and is too much fun till this day. Punch Out it is for me cuz it stands the test of time and it had a perfect mix of challenge, learning curve (easy you in the beginning) and amazing gameplay.
Snes: Puyo Puyo
VS
Megadrive/Genesis: Dr Robotniks mean bean machine
Bonus question: Mega Turrican vs Contra III
f-u c-k i-n shiiiiiit..
b-u b-b l-e shiiiiiit..
b-o b-b l-e shiiiiiit..
bubble bobble mother fucker.
shit.......
Genesis/SNES suggestion: How about comparing Disney's Aladdin on both consoles? I hear they were different.
P.s Samit having played both the genesis and snes versions of aladin I would have to say the genesis version is far superior, having more detailed sprites, and tighter controls. The two games were actually fairly different, with the genesis version being far more action heavy in my opinion, and probably more difficult.
Blast Processing V.S Super FX chip
Super scope 6 vs the Menacer
Castlevania Bloodlines Vs Super castlevania 4
Turtles in time Vs. TMNT hyperstone heist (another no contest like todays...)
But to this day iI still play Punch out
Punch out all the way
But in the end Bubble bobble pips it, for its infectious music and 2 player-friendly game mechanic.
Animaniacs SNES vs Animaniacs Genesis.
One of those was a great game.
One of those was impossibly difficult.
They may well be the same game.
Bub and Bob bob and weave Little Mac into a pile of pugilistic patheticness and tear Tyson a new throat.
