Game Debate to the Death!<br>Blizzard Battle 2006 - Final Round photo

Our Blizzard Battle of 2006 comes to an end with this week's Game Debate to the Death! First WarCraft II showed up WarCraft I & III, then StarCraft went up against all three WarCraft games and won with ease. Last week we gave WarCraft one last chance at going to the finals by putting World of Warcraft up against Diablo II, and here were the raid worthy results:

  • Diablo II - 41 votes - winner!
  • World of Warcraft - 12 votes

That leaves two contendors left in this Blizzard Battle: the highly acclaimed RTS StarCraft, and the forever addictive action RPG Diablo II. The two are completely different games but they both stole more from us than puberty could ever give back, and damnit, that deserves an award. As always, weigh all the pros and cons, pick which game you enjoyed the most, tell us why, and get some friends of yours to vote too! Include all expansions, inside jokes, and money involved, and cast your votes for your favorite Blizzard game of all time.

Check back next week to find out the winner in this hellacious hydralisk battle to end all Blizzard battles.

I enjoyed both a ton, but the RTS genre just isn't one I can enjoy as much as others. Diablo II had an insane amount of depth that didn't rely on levels and already constructed buildings. I felt that the immersion level for setting, story, characters, and details was far greater in D2, and it allowed me to enjoy it much more for much longer than StarCraft ever could.

Although, obviously StarCraft does has a better replayability factor despite this - it will always be an easy game to pick up and enjoy, with solid game mechanics that still challenge an RTS to do better to this day. But I still enjoyed D2 way more, so that's my vote.

THANK YOU BLIZZARD!!!

I played both and loved both but when it comes down to the nitty gritty I'm going with starcraft, there just came a point playing Diablo that I got tired of clicking the mouse continually. Tassadar Ftw!

Both games are fucking unbelieveable. I can remember playing Starcraft when I was probably 9-10 years old, being in a clan, sucking a lot of ass, entertaining myself and others with UltimateBot before bots were banned (those were the days...), and just having tons of fun with the game.

But for me, Diablo II just had so much stronger of a pull with it. Just the rush of spontaneous clicking on absolutely everything, grabbing everything you could before others, hoarding MF on your magic guys to get all the good lewt, dueling people and taking their money/lewt, then hacking your guy to epic proportions and then dueling people, just overall an immense amount of time well wasted. My vote goes to Diablo II.

I got ganked in Diablo II and I got KEKEEKEKE (^_^) ZERG RUSH ganked in Starcraft.

...

But at least Starcraft had that kick ass "The Thing" map back in the 90's. And no, I'm not talking about the sucky remake with the Protoss.

nay good sirs...starcraft gets my vote.i remember being in the computer class in 8th grade.while we were supposed to be building web pages and learning html codes me and all my friends spent a good amount of our time playing the demo version on a lan line everyday that entire school year.and my addiction didnt stop there. even to this day i still put in some starcraft time every week or so just to keep my microskillz up to task. i weep at the thought of starcraft 2 never coming...

Jees that's a tough.

Both games have really strong stories and were followed up with top notch exapnsions. The key factors in the end are Diablo's co-op through the story mode and uber replayability of Starcraft.

I gotta go with starcraft in the end, Diablo II can get a little old after a while and the non-story multiplayer is not my kind of thing.

Starcraft is just one of the best RTS's ever and I never tire of it.

Starcraft: It is just the best game ever made. D2 was the shit as well, but it just didn't have the same feel as SC had. With the custom map editor, the replay value of starcraft felt more genuine compared to the repeated killing of the same mobs over and over while farming baal runs for phat lootz. D2 1.11 patch definitely brought it up, and gives SC a run for it's money, but my final vote must go to StarCraft.

Good point about the map editor. Also D2 was a bit flakey befores its expansion and pre updates. SC rocked straight out of the box.

Diablo 2. IMHO Diablo 2 was simply more innovative. The first time I played through Starcraft, I thought: "hey its Warcraft with aliens". Plus, Starcraft's popularity is one of the reasons why we kept getting so many RTS games that put more emphasis on micromanagement than actual strategy.

Haaaaaard. These two are without a doubt my favourite two blizzard games, and blizzard are definately one of my favourite developers around. Starcraft is, in my books, the absolute pinacle of resource gathering RTS'. It's got fantastic units, wildly disparate, but still remarkably well balanced. It's also got unlimited replayability with multiplayer, especially with user created maps factored in.

Diablo II, on the other hand is one of the most addictive and compelling action RPGs ever. All the classes are great fun in their own way, each one tailorable to great levels to suit individual playstyles with the outstanding skill system. It also has brilliant replayability, with the enormous amout of items available, the randomly generated maps, the extra difficulty modes, and a pretty robust online experience to boot. It also has a great story, told through some of the best cut scenes from any game ever. And for me, that's what it comes down to. For me, single player is more important than online multiplayer, and I preffered D2's single player. Starcraft's was great too, but is pipped at the post. Also, brood war was fucking hard.

My answer: Diablo II

I'm gonna go with Diablo II, simply for the great memories lanning/playing online with it. There was nothing funnier at one stage where pretty much every character had been modified by a third party tool to use super stats...the pvp was outrageous!

Diablo II was a fantastic game, with a fair amount of depth, addictive gameplay, and meaningful leveling- but StarCraft was a freakin' cultural phenomenon. There was a time everyone I knew played StarCraft nearly every day. I sucked ten kinds of ass at this game, but still enjoyed it because of not only the incredibly deep singleplayer campaign, but the incessant flow of new multi maps, mods, total conversions, and single and multi UMS maps that practically made it into new games. SC gave me years of entertainment and people still play the freakin' thing on Bnet. SCFTW.

Starcraft was a little too hectic.. in order to even compete against the computer on the easiest possible setting you'd have to constantly train units like crazy until you have 20 screens filled with just units -- fun but, damn I prefer to sit back, scratch my balls a little bit and relax playing RTS games

Starcraft for the win. I was so completely consumed. One day me and 5 other friends from school played a 4-hour match (all 5 of them versus me). I won... and they call me a hacker to this day. The single player story line for SC and SC:BW were both pretty cool. BW was a little long on the protoss side but no biggie. D2 was tons of fun and all, but just got a little... stupid after a while.

I hate to see two games that I love so much fight it out. I really do. It's like watching loved one fistfight, or perhaps sexy nurses.

I've played both of these games into the floor. I've logged hours upon hours upon hours in both of these games. Gotten everything I could, tried every strategy available, and flexed my micromanagement muscle until it was sore and needed some Rub A535 before heading to bed.

But in the end, above all things, I honestly think that Diablo II comes out the winner in my book. Often imitated but never duplicated, Diablo II sucked up more of my time than Starcraft did, and offered me more hours of enjoyment with the single player campaign, online play, and play over LAN. With lots of unique character classes, dozens upon dozens of build strategies and ever changing dungeons, Diablo II had it all.

My vote goes to Diablo II. Sorry Starcraft, you're a great game and all, but you just don't offer me what Diablo II does. Don't worry, I'll still be your friend though. You're a good person in my eyes.

DIABLO II but it was a hard choice. What does it for me is that it's just easier to pick up and immediately get into than Starcraft - each time you start an episode in Starcraft there are so many missions where you're just unlocking new units/features and a lot of the maps only reward the basic tactics. Still really tough to pick and I'm probably gonna be playing some of each this holiday season.

StarCraft has to get the vote here. It really shouldn't even be close. As much as I love Diablo 2, StarCraft has withstood the test of time and ALL RTS games are compared to it. It is still the standard for (at the very least) competitive RTS games, followed closely by its brother WarCraft III.

It has broken down barriers for me, in being able to communicate with others who I would not normally be able to communicate with. I was able to meet and talk with the progamers at BlizzCon back in 2005, and we were able to talk somewhat because we both knew one language, and that was StarCraft. I know it sounds silly, but I was able to make a connection with these guys, and just seeing the amount of practice Koreans put into the game is insane.

I also work at an EBGames and am still selling the game all the time, albeit slightly more than Diablo 2, but that does still sell also.

So yeah, I definetly vote for StarCraft

God damn you, Fronz. That's like asking us to choose butween Ice-cream or Chocolate (Ice-cream all the way, btw). I love both games more than life, but Diablo II gets my vote. I've played StarCraft a LOT, with a lot of people online, but D2 just holds way too many memories of collecting and forging items, and going on Baal runs, and summoning entire armies with my many, many Necromancers.
