Our Blizzard Battle of 2006 comes to an end with this week's Game Debate to the Death! First WarCraft II showed up WarCraft I & III, then StarCraft went up against all three WarCraft games and won with ease. Last week we gave WarCraft one last chance at going to the finals by putting World of Warcraft up against Diablo II, and here were the raid worthy results:
- Diablo II - 41 votes - winner!
- World of Warcraft - 12 votes
That leaves two contendors left in this Blizzard Battle: the highly acclaimed RTS StarCraft, and the forever addictive action RPG Diablo II. The two are completely different games but they both stole more from us than puberty could ever give back, and damnit, that deserves an award. As always, weigh all the pros and cons, pick which game you enjoyed the most, tell us why, and get some friends of yours to vote too! Include all expansions, inside jokes, and money involved, and cast your votes for your favorite Blizzard game of all time.
Check back next week to find out the winner in this hellacious hydralisk battle to end all Blizzard battles.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Although, obviously StarCraft does has a better replayability factor despite this - it will always be an easy game to pick up and enjoy, with solid game mechanics that still challenge an RTS to do better to this day. But I still enjoyed D2 way more, so that's my vote.
THANK YOU BLIZZARD!!!
But for me, Diablo II just had so much stronger of a pull with it. Just the rush of spontaneous clicking on absolutely everything, grabbing everything you could before others, hoarding MF on your magic guys to get all the good lewt, dueling people and taking their money/lewt, then hacking your guy to epic proportions and then dueling people, just overall an immense amount of time well wasted. My vote goes to Diablo II.
...
But at least Starcraft had that kick ass "The Thing" map back in the 90's. And no, I'm not talking about the sucky remake with the Protoss.
*votes for Starcraft*
Both games have really strong stories and were followed up with top notch exapnsions. The key factors in the end are Diablo's co-op through the story mode and uber replayability of Starcraft.
I gotta go with starcraft in the end, Diablo II can get a little old after a while and the non-story multiplayer is not my kind of thing.
Starcraft is just one of the best RTS's ever and I never tire of it.
Diablo II, on the other hand is one of the most addictive and compelling action RPGs ever. All the classes are great fun in their own way, each one tailorable to great levels to suit individual playstyles with the outstanding skill system. It also has brilliant replayability, with the enormous amout of items available, the randomly generated maps, the extra difficulty modes, and a pretty robust online experience to boot. It also has a great story, told through some of the best cut scenes from any game ever. And for me, that's what it comes down to. For me, single player is more important than online multiplayer, and I preffered D2's single player. Starcraft's was great too, but is pipped at the post. Also, brood war was fucking hard.
My answer: Diablo II
Starcraft was a little too hectic.. in order to even compete against the computer on the easiest possible setting you'd have to constantly train units like crazy until you have 20 screens filled with just units -- fun but, damn I prefer to sit back, scratch my balls a little bit and relax playing RTS games
Not that I don't think that StarCraft isn't great. I just don't particularly enjoy it.
I think StarCraft (like MGS and Final Fantasy Tactics) are great games. I just don't find them fun.
I've played both of these games into the floor. I've logged hours upon hours upon hours in both of these games. Gotten everything I could, tried every strategy available, and flexed my micromanagement muscle until it was sore and needed some Rub A535 before heading to bed.
But in the end, above all things, I honestly think that Diablo II comes out the winner in my book. Often imitated but never duplicated, Diablo II sucked up more of my time than Starcraft did, and offered me more hours of enjoyment with the single player campaign, online play, and play over LAN. With lots of unique character classes, dozens upon dozens of build strategies and ever changing dungeons, Diablo II had it all.
My vote goes to Diablo II. Sorry Starcraft, you're a great game and all, but you just don't offer me what Diablo II does. Don't worry, I'll still be your friend though. You're a good person in my eyes.
This is actually closer than it should be.
It has broken down barriers for me, in being able to communicate with others who I would not normally be able to communicate with. I was able to meet and talk with the progamers at BlizzCon back in 2005, and we were able to talk somewhat because we both knew one language, and that was StarCraft. I know it sounds silly, but I was able to make a connection with these guys, and just seeing the amount of practice Koreans put into the game is insane.
I also work at an EBGames and am still selling the game all the time, albeit slightly more than Diablo 2, but that does still sell also.
So yeah, I definetly vote for StarCraft
1)Spent more money on it,
2)Spent more time on it,
4)Fuck Starcraft
