Game Debate to the Death!<br>Best Super Smash Bros. Melee multiplayer level? photo
Last week's Super Smash Bros. level debate was one of the closest game debates we've ever had. At first the Saffron City stage received a burst of votes, but then Sector Z surged to the top. Then, out of nowhere, a wave of Hyrule votes turned the discussion into a three way tie. Proving yet again that everyone's vote counts, here are the incredibly close top results:
  • 1st: Hyrule Castle (34 votes)
  • 2nd: Saffron City (33 votes)
  • 3rd: Sector Z (28 votes)

As promised, this week we move on to the next game in the series: Super Smash Bros. Melee. With far more levels to choose from this time around, making a decision will probably be much more difficult to make than last week. Which Melee level was your favorite, and why? Give it some serious thought, cast your vote and reasons, get some friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus: Which Super Smash Bros. Melee level did you like the least?

For this one, my vote definitely goes to Hyrule Castle. It's the largest level in the game, and playing as Peach (who flies far with the weakest hits), that's a major plus.

On the same note, my least favorite level is probably Mr. Game & Watch's level, on account of it being so tiny.

However, I really do like most levels, and will still play Mr. Game & Watch's level, I'll just do a bit worse on it.

PS: Barack Obama won last week's bonus question by a landslide.

Obama: 39 votes
McCain: 4 votes
Clinton: 2 votes
Nader: 2 votes

As for this week's debate.... I'm not sure yet. I'll think about it and cast my vote later tonight. I'm leaning towards Majora's Mask Great Bay level for Young Link.

I love rainbow ride but I have to say pokefloats is the best. the constant moving is great but you dont have the stupid road like the fzero level. Yosis island is a close second

@ Dexter -- yah, as far as my least favorite level vote goes, there's a lot of Melee levels I dislike, but the Game and Watch level is by far the most hated. I can't stand that level at all.

Bonus Question: Game and Watch level.

My fauvorite stage is Mushroom Kingdom 2, due to it's pixel-styled design, the original Doki Doki Panic, Birdo and her/his eggs and the size of it. It's pretty nice for 1 on 1 matches.

My least fauvorite stage is Icicle Mountain, because i can't focus on the match, i can't even hit my oponent in a Time match because i'm too busy tryng to not be left behind

Hyrule Castle. Hands down.

As for worst, Jungle Japes was downright unplayable if your tv was too dark, and it was fucking impossible to play with Ganondorf or anything other character whose color palette wasn't obscenely bright.

Oh sorry Corneria is my favorite because although it's plain its just bumpy and curvy enough to make the fight varied while still getting the pure fight feel of a stage like Final Destination

Hyrule Temple definitely. So many epic matches have been fought there. It's also big enough that many "1-hit-KO" techniques don't actually 1-hit-KO, which makes matches last longer. =3

My vote goes to Hyrule Temple. What's with all these people voting for Hyrule Castle? The one in melee has a different name than the 64 version.

Anyway, my reason is because it's such a large course.

I would say for Multiplayer it would have to be Fourside. It's the only level when I can have a balanced Bowser fight too.

For 1 on 1 I like Fountain of Dreams

Game and Watch's level has a special place in Hell. Termina Bay sucks too with the one throw kills.

Kirby's Fountain of Dreams was the best. Although I was partial to Final Destination.

Worst? Hyrule Temple. Hands down. I'd rather play the scrolling stages over that piece of crap. Easy way to make it better? Loose the underground area.

OMG MY FAVORITE LEVEL IS THAT ONE F-ZERO LEVEL THAT EVERYBODY HATES WHERE YOU FIGHT ON THE CARS!

Seriously though, it is.

Best stage: F-Zero -- Big Blue
Worst stage: Past Stages -- Kongo Jungle
Honorable Mention For Rocking My Face Off: Pokefloats
Honorable Mention For Pissing People Off: Brinstar Depths...hey, I liked it!

I may be one of the few, but: Corneria.

The layout just gave me as much freedom as I could want out of a a small stage. My friends and I must have played this more than anything else.

I agree completely, its nice to have a vanilla map that gives just a little freedom. I prefer using it in rotations with others though.

My vote goes to Termina. Makes me happy.

I love the Pokemon Stadium stage, and I am totally stoked that it is coming back for Brawl.

That said, the Ice Climbers stage needs to DIAF. It truly is the worst level ever. Random speeds? Really? No thank you.

Hyrule Castle was awesome, but I always thought it was too big. For my money, the best stage in the game is Pokémon Stadium, with Corneria being a close second.

As for my least favorite stage...Jungle Japes, Great Bay, Game & Watch’s level, and Icicle Mountain can all go to hell.

Best stage: 64 Kirby Dreamland. It offered the perfect size for both solo and 4-player melee's. It's essentially the template for Brawl's Battlefield.

Worst: Flatzone. TOO SMALL!
BluFire's Avatar
BluFire at 03/04/2008 21:13
Love love love Corneria because it's really well balance. It's not just a flat stage so you can actually play the game the way I think it's meant to be played, but it's not super crazy or anything.

Hate hate hate Venom. I don't know why. I guess I just hate the way that the stage is split into two like that - it throws me off.
TheDirtyHobo's Avatar
TheDirtyHobo at 03/04/2008 21:15
Pokemon Stadium is definitely my favorite, it's got some drastic changes in terrain, making you constantly stay on your toes, while still being simple enough to not be distracting.

On the other hand, any level where you could set two controllers down, walk away, and wind up dead when you came back is an instant failure. This includes both Metroid levels, both F-Zero levels, the Yoshi story level where you start on the ship, pokefloats, and of course the GODDAMN KING KEMEHAMEHA OF ANNOYING LEVELS, Icicle Mountain.

Though other levels do have individual spots that you can get killed on if you stand still for too long (on the turtle in Termina Bay, clouds in Yoshi Island, in the road in Onett), I'm only going to include the levels where you have no other option.

What's with all the Hyrule lovin'? I always thought it was only good for the times when you want to be a coward and hide down in the pit toward the bottom so you can only die if you get hit at just the right angles. Other then that, it's a pretty meh-tastic level.

Wooo! My poll ideas were used from two weeks ago. Although maybe that has something to do with Brawl coming out soon. Either way, time to vote.

Favourite: Fountain of Dreams
Least Favourite: Tie between Icicle Mountain and Flatzone. Both are ew.
