Game Debate to the Death!<br>Best Paper Mario game? [Update] photo

[Update: In an effort to make this debate as confusing as possible, this is both a day late and a week old. Last week when this was first posted, it was swiftly wiped off the front page in a matter of minutes by the deluge of more important Dtoid E3 posts. As a result, it noticeably received far less votes than usual, and I have a feeling it's not just because our readers don't enjoy the Paper Mario series. So for the first time ever, I've decided to extend the voting for a debate one more week -- keep on debating and discussing and check back next week for the winner and round two of this series' debate!]

In the last debate, I took a reader request and asked everyone to choose between the Devil May Cry series and Ninja Gaiden games. Each action series adds different qualities to its genre, and I think Dtoid reader RobotFart summed it up best with "Personally I think Devil May Cry is more about style than skill, and is more forgiving. Whereas Ninja Gaiden is pretty much the exact opposite." Judging by the votes, both gameplay setups are thoroughly enjoyed, but the winner is clear. Here are the results:

  • Ninja Gaiden series (55 votes) -- Winner!
  • Devil May Cry series (46 votes)
This week I'm taking ZombiePlatypus's debate request, and we're watching all three Paper Mario games compete against each other. Next week, when the triple threat dust finally settles and reveals a winner, we'll crank things up and have the victor take on Super Mario RPG for the throne.

So which Paper Mario game is your favorite, and why? Did the story of one of them stand above the rest? Were the characters more enjoyable in one than the others? Or maybe the Wii gameplay really impressed you? Has the series gone downhill, or is it only getting better with each update? Give it some serious thought, cast your votes, get some Paper Mario pals to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Bonus Question: What would you like to see the series do next?

I see a couple of people praising the gameplay mechanics in Super Paper Mario. They sure look good in videos, but in the actual game they very rarely led to anything interesting or fun; just very lazy level planning, that utterly failed to take advantage of the 2D/3D shift's potential. Crush did a far better job with that.
And beyond the half hearted use of the central mechanic, Super Paper Mario just didn't work as a platformer - the level design alternated between movie tie in game generic and "This isn't game, it's a practical joke" bullshit. Not being an rpg fan, I felt the rpg elements were tacked on and pointless, and actual rpg fans seem to agree with me.
Can't actually vote, since I can't stand turn based combat and never played the earlier games, but Super Paper Mario is a really mediocre game, and still the only game I ended up disliking enough to trade in.

Super Mario 64 is my fav. I've been wanting to replay that game for a while now too.

I like the GameCube version, but the final boss was bullshit and I could never beat it. Played the Wii version a bit at Dysons and I can see myself liking it. One day when I finally get a Wii.

I vote for the Ten-thosand-year door.
Super Paper Mario has some promising elements, but it's too easy and considerably less RPG. The 2D/3D could be quite a twist on tradditional gameplay, but it wasn't implemented well enough. I also liked the "cooking" to make new items/food.
But I stand by my decision: Ten-thousand-year Door.

Super Paper Mario was a letdown, it was too dull.

Paper Mario 64, on the other hand, was fucking awesome. There weren't any bad things about it, really. It had the best set of sidekicks in the series, and it was an original concept. The level designs were brilliant too. I remember the Shy Guy toy-themed level, and how you had to go into an abandoned house and turn invisible for a while until the entrance opened, and other awesome things like that. Also, bosses were challenging, and I actually died on them, unlike in Thousand Year Door, where on EVERY SINGLE BOSS I would beat it with just a fragment of health left.

TTYD was awesome, however i didnt feel it was on par with the original.
Super Paper Mario was a great idea, but i found myself trading it in within a week, after i beat it.

Bonus Q: an actual sequel to Super Mario RPG. or just Super Mario RPG 2 (kind of like Final Fantasy 2 is to Final Fantasy. completely different game, just same formula).

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Period.

Combat was much quicker and refined, visuals were polished, and the story was just as good if you ask me.

Delicious.

Super Paper Mario. I loved the oldschool gameplay with paper graphics.

Thousand Year Door, here.
I loved Super, but it didn't really have the depth (paper pun semi-intended) of the others. No party members, not as many varied locations, not the same charm. Not that Super didn't have gobs of charm, but TYD really pushed it in that department.

Thousand-Year Door for me.

I didn't play the original until it released on the Virtual Console, but I played the other two when they were released. Although it's possible that the 2nd one is my favorite because it's the first one I played, I really think it's because they take the paper theme to a very literal level (paper airplane, rolled-up tube, ect), rather then it being more of an inside joke like in the original. The 3rd is my least favorite. It's a great game, but I wouldn't go back and play it again... it gets an award for worst-designed NPCs ever; just random shapes with eyes. And it was such a departure! More like a side story than a part 3, y'know?

What also made the second one the best was the dialogue between the princess & the computer. Best part was the side-scrolling Bowser levels.

TYD all the way!

The only one i played (but i still want to play ther rest) is the first Paper Mario 64, i wa in <3 with the TV ad.

Also, i don't think it would be a nice idea to put Paper Mario agains these, knowing how most people are, they will vote for Super Mario RPG even if they hadn't played it.

I honestly have not played the original Paper Mario, so my vote goes to Paper Mario: TTYD. Both SPM and PM:TTYD had great stories (maybe SPM even more than the latter), but TTYD was just more fun to play though, and much longer without being repetitive.

What I would like to see in the series next? Well, a return to the RPG gameplay. SPM was a neat little experiment, but I'd like to see more of the action-timed rounds that we loved in the previous games.

The original, because it was just so simple and intuitive, even for an RPG, which is something I think all Mario should be.

I had the most fun playing it, skipping school to play it all day. And I always ate a certain type of candy while playing it, eating that candy now reminds me of paper mario days. TTYD was really good too, I just found the 64 one most enjoyable.

Paper Mario 64 was the best. Thousand Year Door was ok, but the change to the stage and new world weren't quite as deep as the Mushroom Kingdom. I liked how you got to explore the actual Mushroom Kingdom in the first and its overall game play was the best. Super Paper Mario was terrible, the full platform focus was nothing short of a detraction from the original. The story was awful and so were the characters.

I love the original paper mario, but the thousand year door just did everything better, better story, better graphics, better humor, better characters for your party. Also, the arena level is one of my favorite moments in games ever, its so awesome. So yeah, vote to thousand year door.

Update:

I missed the part about where I'd like the series to go next.

I would like to see a WiiWare release called Paper Luigi that follows Luigi's adventures during TTYD. He always had the most ridiculous stories.

Since MArio RPG isn't in the mix until next week I'm going to go with Paper Mario 64. I never got as into TTYD as I did that one, and I never actually played Super Paper Mario...

Where to go next? I agree with some others, a true follow-up to the original Mario RPG. Square likes Nintendo again, so I say sort out the money issues and give us a real sequel...

now i can see how some people can be blinded by TTYD and accidentally vote for it, and i forgive you.

TTYD was too damn easy. i loved the 64 version, and it was very difficult. i mean, i spent hours tryin to get by that repeating room in bowsers castle! make no mistake, i also loved TTYD, but it was pretty much the same as the first one and it was too easy. so my vote: paper mario 64

ps. i liked super paper mario but it doesnt come close to the first two

I'm an old-school Paper Mario. I ignored all the skeptics. I was a rebel. I played the game, loved it, and conquered it. The sequel was fun with its more open-ended gameplay and the weird side quests(100 FLOORS OF MADNESS!!!!), but the classic still had a better storyline and was a bit more memorable.

I've always favoured RPGs over platformers and for this debate there is no difference.

Lastly, i think two great ideas for debates about mario games would be:

Super Mario RPG vs. Mario 64

and

Super Mario Land vs. Yoshi's Island

These two, I would think, could bring friends to each others' throats.

Super Paper Mario

It has excellent art direction, the designs were fresh and the color pallette was brilliant. The charecters were inventive, and the gameplay mechanic was neat.

Hated the turn based fighting so I didn't miss that a bit.

Some parts of it were pretty tough, I had to put it down a few times. Much of it was easy breezy. It was well worth playing to the end.

The graphics work so well on the wii its a wonder they haven't cranked out several more of these already.

I am obviously biased, (as the administrator of digibutter.nerr), but I loved the gameplay and style of Super Paper Mario and would love to see a continuation of that series. Although, a new traditional Paper Mario RPG would still be a big hit too. Crazy ideas for a new Paper Mario game were recently discussed at digibutter.nerr.

Thousand Year door. Improved on everything the original lacked, and while Super Paper Mario had interesting game mechanics, I didn't think they were implemented that well, and the rest of the game didn't deliver as much as the originals.
