Game Debate to the Death!<br>Best football game ever? photo

And just to clarify which "football" we're talking about, I added the pigskin and cheerleader picture above. That's a lot of different skins for one pic. To wrap up our two week Thanksgiving debate, let's take a look at last week's food frenzy outcome before moving on to this week's football discussion. Here are the very close results:

  • Harvest Moon series: 40 votes
  • Animal Crossing series: 43 votes -- Winner!

This week's debate is a football free for all. All you have to do is pick your favorite football video game of all time. Will you vote for the NES classic Tecmo Super Bowl? Or has one of the many Madden games in recent years won you over? Maybe you're more of a Blitz 64 fan, or even the newer Blitz: The League? And there's always the old ESPN NFL 2K football games to consider, not to mention the new All-Pro Football 2K8. There's more football game nominees than I can name here, so it's a long list to choose from. Just make sure you narrow it down to one game -- I don't want to see another tie and have to take this thing into overtime!

Which single football video game have you enjoyed the most, and why? Who will win the Dtoid Bowl of 2007? Give us a reason for your decision, get some sports buddies to give their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner.

Blitz 2000, for sure, man. That game was awesome.

NFL Blitz, because there was nothing like staring in awe at the (then) greatest arcade graphics ever (powered by 3dfx), then getting your ass kicked by the local kid who knew everything about his favorite sports team.

Though there were quite a few that I enjoyed, I think my favorite would have to be Madden 95 for the SNES.

I loved that game as a kid and played it with a fervor.

ESPN 2k5. Period. Its still better than All-Pro. Loved putting music that played when you got a touchdown (Jump Around-House of Pain) and first downs. Even when the game started..had Hendrix star spangled banner playing. Commentary still the best and controls were on the money. The game still can hold its own and now its backwards compatible on 360. Give it a try haters.

NFL Street. I loved the mini-game fueled career mode, the soundtrack was awesome, and the create-a-team mode was beyond incredible.

My vote goes to Mutant League Football for the Genesis. I haven't played any realistic football games other than NFL Quarterback Club '98 on the N64, and the only thing I liked doing in that was making my receivers run ridiculous plays and still coming out with a touchdown. I think I had one where my receivers traced out a DNA double helix. It confused the hell out of the defense, apparently.

I woulda voted for old school NFL Blitz 64, but that game had the worst AI ever. Winning by two touchdowns? Time to fumble five fucking times!

One time I went over my friends house to see if he wanted to hang out, and when I walked down into his basement he had been up 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter, while his little brother played some game on the SNES on the other TV next to him. A few minutes later and Blitz had robbed him of his entire lead, and the opposing team managed to win somehow. I've never heard someone scream so loud -- he jumped up, grabbed his brother's SNES off the ground, and started slamming it into the concrete wall with one hand and clubbing it with his 64 controller with his other hand. Plastic pieces flew everywhere like fireworks celebrating his defeat, and his little brother burst into tears and started crying, but it was still one of the funniest gaming moments I've ever seen.

Moral of the story? My vote = Blitz: The League. Cuz it wasn't full of AI B.S. (worse then AIDS), and was still fun even though it took out free late hits.

--Madden '93, Genesis--

This has been the consensus from da olde skewel cronies for years. I worked at EA during that time and many involved said the "magic" of that version was never quite captured again.

But damn I loved Mutant League Football, too.

that's easy... Only in Blitz the League can you feel the satisfaction of breakin a QB's arm after he dumps 7 on ya. "How ya gonna hold your purse now?!"

Montana to Rice back in your own endzone with the entire defence chasing you, and air it out to the other endzone....TOUCHDOWWWWWN, cue montana running with 1 finger raised triumphantly into the air. So damn good.

Have fun tallying up the votes for this one, Fronz.

I’ve been playing football video games since way back in the day, and since there isn’t a particular Madden game that stands out to me (even though I love the series), I’m gonna go with the greatest multiplayer football video game of all time: NFL Blitz on the PS1. I whiled away many ninth grade afternoons playing that with three friends (good thing we had a multitap).

Remember when EA Sports made good games? Madden 2004 was great, but 2005 brought Vick's skills down a bit, added defensive playmaker, and the collector's edition had 3 previous Madden games on it, a trivia game, and 25 classic NFL moments to play. MADDEN 2005.
