I suppose the same could be said for multiplayer-heavy shooters like Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 or Team Fortress 2, especially given downloadable content, but if we're taking downloadable content into the equation as well (assume our deserted island has broadband Internet), then Rock Band gets extra points for remaining fresh, assuming they keep releasing weekly songs.
In short, Rock Band gets my vote.
Although it can't really be considered a "game" because it's 5 games in one package, but all of them are superb in every way and at $59.99 (You can get the PC version for $37 right now)it deserves to be bought.
That or COD4
Or, if we're talking about the whole shmeal, the Orange Box.
I have never been so drawn into and addicted to a game like this since my days with WoW. TF2 is the most disgustingly awesome game I've ever had the pleasure of playing. This is my Rock Band for Dexter. I can imagine myself playing this until God knows when.
I couldn't live for more than a day without hearing HUDDA HUDDA HUDDA or EVERAONE ABACK TO THE BASE, PARDENER.
Aside from Bioshock, Orange Box comes in at number two and Rock Band a close third.
If the collection doesn't count -- then Mass Effect. ^^
Halo 3 would be a second mainly because of multiplayer (split screen online) and its uncanny ability to make me yell loudly, both out of anger and excitement.
Call of Duty 4 would be a distant third. Single Player was way too short, and nothing says "I cant code AI" better than simply making tons of enemies have ridiculous accuracy, grenade throwing, and player spotting skills on the highest difficulty. Multiplayer is cool, but no splitscreen online was a big let down and also the fact that it doesnt seem to promote team work.
Bioshock was excellent and memorable, but it has to be taken in small doses and frankly, its not entirely revolutionary.
However, Orange Box impressed me in so many shocking ways. Portal's puzzle innovation was simple, efficient, saccharine fun, and its writing was keen and - though not outright hilarious - ineffably witty. Team Fortress 2 is a perfect exercise in balance and style, and I enjoy its multiplayer to no end. Half-Life 2 and Episodic content is still some of the best PC gaming to date and its cinematic intensity and scope are unrivaled. Not to mention, all five of these for the price of one normal game is a bargain not to be trifled with. Thus, it is
The Orange Box
that gets my vote this time around.
i'm thinkin' real hard, and the japanese version of No More Heroes was a fucking blast.
shit. i cannot decide.
2007 was just an amazing year. i can't pick a single game that made the whole year worthwhile....
fuck it.
Rock Band is so much fucking fun. i have to go with that and have nightmares about how i doomed all the other great games
Honorable mention is NHL 08, a lot of which is because it gets no love with "hardcore" (read: anti-sports) gamers. This year's edition bravely did away with the arcadey feel that all EA NHL games have had, while keeping things fun. Taking things like "speed burst" away is a ballsy move, and though many won't recognize the improvements since they simply never *played* the title, it's hands-down the best sports game this year or in recent years for that matter.
Best 2.2 hours of gaming ive ever had. And, it comes with the best multiplayer game for pc. PORTAL!
I know this isn't a popular source, but the game does an excellent job at one thing - breathing new life into a stagnant genre. This game kept me glued and found myself waking up at night wanting to play it - the sure sign that the game needs more acclaim. Sure, there were things it could have done better, but I enjoy the journey it took.
Honorable mention:
Heavenly Sword (simply for the epic feeling I had when I played the game. It would have been number one... but it was too short and left me begging for more. Hopefully the sequel will be better).
