Last week was a really close Gamecube championship debate that had me guessing until the very end. At first Resident Evil 4 seemed to have it in the bag, but Wind Waker rallied on page two, only to relinquish its lead several times. The trophy changed hands many times in the final minutes, but when the dust settled, here were the results:
- Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker (58 votes) -- Winner!
- Resident Evil 4 (52 votes)
This week we take a break from our continuing theme of odd debate console-by-console tournaments, and move on to more pressing matters. The Dtoid staff has already picked its 2008 game of the year, and now it's time for you to have your say.
Which game do you think is the best game of 2008, and why? Give it some serious thought, get some of your friends to share their opinions as well, and check back next week for the winner. Then we'll move on to the Xbox brackets of odd debates.
P.S. You can only vote for ONE game. Voting for more than one game will disqualify all of your votes.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

All of that being said (and there's still so much more to say, even after countless reviews from countless sites), I have to admit that I haven't been able to play MGS4 yet, and I have a feeling that may deserve Game of the Year just as much, if not more.
Can't wait to read everyone's in-depth opinions! Support your favorites!
Dorito's Dash of Destruction. For its price...its the best game you can get this year.
Wish we could choose more than one.... but if it has to be so, then Fallout takes it.
I got the game on day one and haven't really put it down since. It's also one of the few games where buying the collector's/special/limited/etc. edition didn't feel like a complete waste of money.
maybe it doesn't quite deserve GOTY, but everyone else is going to vote Fallout 3 (deservedly so). so my vote goes MM9.
Persona 4 all the way, though Layton is a close second.
I may need to get Fallout 3 though.
Fallout 3 is horrible. Enough said.
GTAIV, no. As a city simulation, and perhaps as narrative device, OK. As a game, there are too many holes in the mechanics to beat Fallout 3.
Compared to about ten sessions of Lost Odyssey which have culminated in a whopping ten hours, I'd have to say that's something for fun factor. Granted, I do intend to go back and play Lost Odyssey sometime in the future, but it didn't bring the fun for me like Persona 4 has thus far.
Frankly, I'm not big on most new games...the only games I bought when they came out this year were P4, SH:Homecoming (egh!), and Rock Band 2. I do want to play Dead Space at some point, and if AITD ever gets the patched version like the PS3 has, I definitely WANT to play that game.
Persona 4, and Kanji-kun for the win as best character ever.
Honorable mentions to Lost Odyssey, GTA IV, Gears of War 2, and NHL 09. Keep in mind I don't have a PS3 (yet) or a Wii (ever), and haven't picked up my DS in ages.
Oh, and...
@ Foshi- How does that qualify for a "Enough said." That phrase is usually reserved for completely obvious statements, not "hey, the game many people think was the best of the year is not just mediocre, but actually horrible." Or are we just supposed to recalibrate our opinions according to your statement of oh-so-obvious fact? :)
This game really touched me on so many levels. Everything about it is perfect.
I am commanding you ALL to vote for Dorito Dash of Destruction.
so much happy and sad all at once! i was about at tears at the end.
idk if Dissidia: Final Fantasy would count for this year, but if it does, i think that's where my vote goes instead.
I think it's the best made game of the year, it felt like a high quality movie throughout. It was the only JRPG I could actually get out of the first town in, so it gets my vote.
That said I'm voting for GTA 4 because it had a character who abuses bull-shark testosterone.
Metal Gear Solid 4
This game is immediately captivating, letting you know simply that your mission is to kill Liquid. Then when it gets going, it fleshes out the story, the backstory, and the peripheral character stories to create this extremely dense Dickensian videogame novel that is self-encapsulating (if you haven't played the previous games) and also a satisfying ending to the few quadrilogies that have been released by tying up every single loose end that has been dangling in the past ten odd years.
The gameplay is varied and never boring, allowing different approaches to the end points. If you're a gun whore, this game has them all- almost too many to use.
The soundtrack, cinematics, and presentation are top notch. You can tell that the people working on this game let nothing pass through them until it was perfect.
Overall, the game was just plain fun. At the same time, this GAME that you were playing also felt like serious business with the topics and philosophical discussions going on, but it never lost that fun feeling that comes with being a video GAME.
Finally, the reason it is my game of the year is because when I played it, nothing could distract me. When I did not play it, everything felt like a distraction until I could play it again.
i work way too much, and don't have much time to play games anymore (despite the lack of difficulty, it took me two weeks to beat deadspace), but i still found the time to get six playthroughs of MGS4 before moving on to play GTA4. MGS4 has to be my biggest reason for getting a PS3.
the story, action, graphics, humor and unlockable weapons (SOLAR GUN) were the most impressive i've seen all year. i can't even describe the feeling of heartbreak in knowing this was solid snake's last mission.
So addicting. Can't wait for the new DLC.
Persona 4(which I just beat literally moments ago for the first time) is my runner up. It never reaches the emotional height of MGS4, but it had a fun combat system, engaging story and characters.
It's too addictive to ignore.
