Game Debate to the Death! 11/28/06

Game Debate to the Death! 11/28/06 photo

Last week's game debate put the Roller Coaster Tycoon series against all of the Sim City games. The result? A tie!! Boo! Hiss! We'll have to come back to that debate some time in the future to settle things.

This week's debate is a lot less black and white, and it will surely hurt many gamers to make a choice between the three: Which of the first 3 Warcraft games is your favorite? Go ahead and include expansions along with their corresponding games. Weigh the pros and cons of each game, cast your votes, get some of your Blizzard buddies to give their opinions on the debate too, and return next week for the winners.

Warcraft II for me. 1 was awesome but too simple, and 3 was sweet with its cinemas and setup, but i just remember loving 2 a lot more than the others when I first got them.

I've only played the second and third ones, and at least the third one had factions that were more than visually different.

WC3 is my vote, but it's still not a very good RTS - the map editor made that game for online, though. Ah, the good old days of DOTA.

I have to say Warcraft III, only because I haven't played and can't ever find the first two. I'd LOVE to play the first two sometime, I just need to find them first...

Clearly the only correct answer is StarCraft.

Three, no doubt. The custom games in three were the absolute best and based on that I HEREBY CAST MY VOTE!

Warcraft II. Use to play this game all the time in high school with a bunch of friends in the computer lab. That and Quake and Quake Team Fortress. Some fond memories of all of those!

I only ever played Warcraft III. It was good. I won't vote though.

Without a doubt Warcraft II. III kinda jumped the Murloc for me.

Also, we need a clarification. Does WC2 include the later released WC2: Battle.net Edition? Without it, WC3 is the clear choice. But with Battle.net support in WC2, it's much more of a debate. But still. SC all the way. (Since SC was originally a WC game in concept, but later changed to a space setting, it should totally count)

I third StarCraft and request that it be included as a choice.

Saying Starcraft is cheating because obviously it's the best! Among the 3 Warcrafts, Warcraft II stands the test of time. Warcraft I and III are simply not as good although III comes closer than I does. WCIII was a lot of fun but it lacked the replay value of WCII and the multiplayer wasn't as good. WCI really hasn't aged that well, and I never liked it that much. Starcraft will always be my favorite RTS game of all time.

Never played I but I really loved II. There were so many damn levels not to mention an expansion that brought another 200+ levels. It was madness.

But, I have to go with III due to the fact that the online component is so great. I'm not talking actual vs. matches, I'm talking custom games. Maze of bunnies, battleships, kodo tag, etc. It ate up hundreds of hours of my life.

Has to be #2. Warcraft III would win if you looked at online mods, but from a gameplay perspective, I absolutely loved Warcraft 2. I was always big on the old school 2d C&C graphics. Ah, nostalgia.

Warcraft 2 by far for me, its the game that actually got me into gaming. I can remember playing it for hours and hours on end. (The only game that probably tops it for me is Starcraft)

You have to go with Warcraft 2. Who didn't love the first time you annoyed your Ogre Magi or Dwarven Demolition Squad. I still laugh everytime I hear "I've got a flying machine"

DoTA is a user-created game for Warcraft III. You basically try to level your hero up and destroy the enemy team's base/buildings.

No question about it.

i owned all 3 of them, played all 3 of them.

my vote: Warcraft 2

Yes DeusPayne, include it all.

And for those of you wanting to vote for StarCraft . . . just wait til next week's debate hehehe. I was gonna make it StarCraft vs all Warcraft games but I was only 99% sure it would still win :) The winner of this week goes up against the beast next week for a potential slaughter. I'm really curious to see if it will be dead even or a landslide.

Warcraft II wins of these.

Of course starcraft wins against anything else blizzard has ever made, ever.

WC III. I think the people that say it was not a good RTS simply did not achieve a very high point on the learning curve.

Warcraft 3: TFT wins to me. Ladder is pretty fun(For a while, once I got to about level 25 it was all about being cookie-cutter) and its custom maps are decent.

I remember playing WC1 and 2 with a local friend over our 14.4 modems back in like 1996. It was great at the time just playing vs comps but both are pretty simple and feature very archaic control systems. They dont reward you for doing anything but massing the best unit imho. I have fond memories, but like most PC games, I dont want to go back.

Warcraft 2 with the expansion set was about the most fun I ever had playing Warcraft... so I'm voting for 2.

I'd have to say WCIII. Only because I love the map editor and the quirky games everyone makes (As well as Dota!)

I have to go w/ Warcraft III and it's expansions. The gameplay is innovative and fun. The game focuses on micromanagement over macromanagement, and that makes for more focused gameplay. Just 'cause your opponent has a large army doesn't mean that they have the automatic win if they can't micromanage their army for shit.

My vote goes to Warcraft 3

And I just wanna give a big THANK YOU to Blizzard for publishing MACpatable games

For its time, Warcraft I was pretty awesome, but it hasn't aged well at all. Warcraft III had incredible storytelling elements and the sky high production values made the game a pleasure to play through, but I never found it to fully take hold in terms of addictiveness.

Warcraft II and the Dark Portal (which, incidentally, I've been playing through in the last few days) expansion set together comprise the best Warcraft experience in the series. It is the pinnacle of Blizzard's campy style of humour, and it has aged extremely well. I still love the art style and voice acting and the game has no weird faults that make me think "Ugh, I played this back in the day?"

Warcraft II ftw, and what not.
