Game consoles are the new hotness for thieves photo

Have the urge to steal but want to steal something cool? Well, all the cool kids are stealing game consoles.

I don't know why the FBI is tracking this, but they say that the theft of videogame consoles has risen 285 percent since 2007. Again, I had no idea they were counting, but they say that 2007 saw 11,074 systems stolen. That sounds like a lot, but it rose to 21,732 in 2008 and almost doubled to 42,615 in 2009.

They guess that this is due to the portable size of the...portables, which kid of makes sense. Small targets that would sell for a decent amount is what I'd steal if I were a thieving as*hole.

Hey, anyone wanna buy a DSi. I got an...erm...an extra one here.

Thank Christ I have an phat PS3. I'd like to see somebody shift that to the other side of the entertainment cabinet, let along pick it up and run with it!

Because it's really that important to track video game theft. Can't you just cram it into like networth or something>

As some one who got robbed back in October (and blogged here about it) I can verify that game consoles are a hot ticket item for thieves. Though for some reason they only took a Nintendo DS and an Xbox 360 when the Wii and PS3 Phat were sitting right next to them.

This is sort of why I don't want to post a pic of my setup... Kind of invites this sort of thing. I've had a PS2, countless DVDs, countless NES, SNES, PS1 and 2 games robbed from my house. I got a dog, and a shotgun. I haven't been robbed since.

Why doesn't the company that makes the system give an option to "lock" or "locate" the system after it's been reported stolen? It's not like they aren't capable of identifying your specific system over their network (specifically PS3 and Xbox360)... Then again that might violate some privacy act or something... But still.. I have to "Activate" my ps3, and I set it to prompt for a password when you want to login to the network. I know the xbox has this same feature.. why isn't this being used to countermeasure theft? It's a pain in the ass to replace some things after they've been lifted, even WITH insurance.

BTW, Dale, There's a typo in your short article: "They guess that this is due to the portable size of the...portables, which kid of makes sense." Shouldn't it "kind of" make sense?

Aw, poor Miss Ryder. She'll never live down that shoplifting.

Someone tries to steal my consoles, I'm going to jail for murder.
