Game changer: NPD to receive Walmart sales data photo

The games industry has looked to NPD game sales data for their reports and analysis, but we could never put too much stock into the numbers as they did not include the data from the world's largest retailer, Walmart. That changed later last year when Walmart said that they would publish some sales data. Today NPD confirms that they've reached an agreement with the retailer to receive point-of-sale info for both their stores and website.

According to IndustryGamers, NPD and Walmart are working together under this new agreement to monitor game sales as well as sales of other industries we don't care about.  NPD calls this agreement a game changer for the industry. I'm just glad that their data will now finally show accurate game sales information.

Now if only PC gaming could track all of the DD sales for games and we might finally start getting a more accurate picture at game sales...

@Drakengard

And if the NPD could get sales numbers from Sony on how many Vita games are being sold through PSN...

We'll see some Catz or Dogz games break in the chart now?

Good. It's good to get something other than those "units shipped" numbers. Try and hide the dirty truth now, publishers.

It will be interesting to have more sales data, but it doesn't matter all that much to me. From an business standpoint, units sold to retailers can be more important.

@Nic128

I'm personally hoping to see Walmarts "case, cheap-lame-game, and accessories" boxsets make it onto this list.

The world knows not the power of a quickly thrown together Tinkerbell bundle.

Until PC digital distribution sales gets tallied, NPD sales still won't matter.

@Maniac Amen bruddah

That said, I hit Walmart a lot to pick up things that are a year or so old. Sometimes they carry less mainstream titles too. I'll grab those there because they tend to have them cheaper.

I don't see how this changes anything. Walmart sells the same games as everyone else, and the discounts are minor at best.

Games at Walmart are usually cheaper AND they encourage impulse buying, which is where the big numbers can come from.

Call me when PC digital distribution sales hit NPD. Sick of companies citing hideously inaccurate numbers from NPD as justification for all the BS they give us.
