Game Boy to go Game bye-bye, Wiiware to be Wiiwelcomed photo

Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications, George Harrison, has recently made statements that nod toward his company finally dumping its venerable Game Boy line of handhelds to officially go steady with its younger, sexier sister, the Nintendo DS. After years of being strung along with Nintendo wanting to "see other people," Harrison has given the Game Boy the message to stop sending flowers with really creepy cards.

"This year in our marketing you really won't see much push against Game Boy itself, so it will kind of seek its own level. It's hard to say in the future if we will ever bring back the Game Boy trademark. It was a big risk for us to actually pass on it and call the new product the Nintendo DS, but it was part of Mr. Iwata's philosophy that if we're going to make a radical difference and try to reach a new audience, then we have to change the name... We had to make a break even though we had one of the greatest trademarks in the history of the industry."

With the DS becoming a runaway success, it's no surprise that Nintendo's focus isn't on the Game Boy anymore. Its name is no longer needed to shift handheld units, since the DS has all but replaced it in the hearts of gamers. As the Sun sets on one Nintendo product, however, Harrison talked about the dawn of Wiiware, hinting that we may see the Wii's new online gaming venture sooner than expected:

"It may not take until 2008. I've seen a couple of ideas that have already been generated even before we went public [with WiiWare]. Whether those are going to be ready or not, I don't really know. It really depends on the developers. If they have their games ready and they're of an appropriate quality, then there's nothing to stop them from launching before the end of the year. It's just the fact that we only recently gave out the development tools and the development specifications, so most people haven't even started yet."

So there. It all hinges on those lazy, lazy games developers, according to Harrison. Damn their lazy hides.

I dunno... I mean, I see their reasoning. DS is the new video-Jesus and all, but Game Boy still resonates with a LOT of people. It seems a shame to just leave it on the table, but the times, they change y'know?

I'll pour one out for ya, Game Boy. We had some good times. Good times.

The SP remains their absolute pinnacle in terms of hardware design, as far as I'm concerned. That slim little beauty was mere steps from perfection...

Feast well in Valhalla, noble warrior.

The title of this post confused the bejebus out of me.

But I think it's no surprise that the Game Boy name is being forgotten. If anything, I think it's a good thing for them to change their image. Game Boy just sounds incredibly generic and boring.

As for Wiiware, I think I'll stick to the XBLA. At least I can demo the games on there before buying them unlike the VC (Which I hope they fix eventually. I ain't buying shit else unless I can try it out first).

So much for Nintendo's 'three pillar' model that they boasted when they first announced the DS.

would've been stupid to continue GameBoy...would kill their DS sales.

I shed a tear...yet am comforted by my continued ownership of a Color, Advance, Advance SP, and Micro. Maybe I should get around to upgrading that SP to an "SP2," the ones with the brighter screens.

@ deiga: Well, I'd say that lasted at least through the 2005 holiday season, in terms of a stream of worthwhile games. The final holiday season for the GBA was 2006, when FF V and VI came out. I'd say that's pretty good support of a company marketing policy for a system that was due to have an update around 2005. The three pillar model fell apart this holiday season anyways with the death of the Gamecube.

Interesting article on the subject from last year... it's too bad the "Game Boy" brand name won't continue on in the form of "Game Boy DS".

Funny... I still refer to my DS as a Game Boy even though I knew it was wrong.

I was always wondering what the next Gameboy would be like, if it ever came, like maybe a PSP-level power hardware (or better) single screen handheld that only plays games (like the DS), but no new Gameboys now. So, what's the next DS going to be? Should be interesting, especially if it can play current DS games + its games (but likely no Gameboy features, or even a DS Slot 2).
