Game Boy inducted into National Toy Hall of Fame photo

Did you know there was a National Toy Hall of Fame at Strong Nation Museum of Play in Rochester, New York? True story!

Inducted last year into the Toy Hall of Fame was the Stick (seriously?), and this year it's joined by a few other toys you might have heard of -- the ball, Fisher Price's "Big Wheel," and Nintendo's Game Boy! Congratulations, Nintendo! Your hand held is as cool and fun as Lincoln Logs, LEGOs, the rocking horse, Raggedy Ann and Andy, the Slinky, Silly Putty, and the Easy-Bake Oven.

Anyone have any classic Game Boy stories? You first memories of the handheld? Do tell!

I tried playing on my old Gameboy a few months ago to find that about a third of the screen doesn't display any more and wondering how I ever played Mario Land on such a blurry screen!

Ah, I remember when I first played the Gameboy. Simply the idea that you could play games away from home was just so fascinating at the time! I mean okay, all I had was Tetris, but still, the fact I was playing a game THAT WASN'T CONNECTED TO AN OUTLET was groundbreaking. Okay, that and I was 5 and the only console I had ever seen in my life was a SNES at a friend's house, but still, good times.

My first Gameboy was a yellow GB Pocket with Mario Land 1+2, I later got Tetris. I consider it the first games machine I ever owned and I flipped out N64-kid style when I got it. Especially since my parents hid it from me until a week after my actual birthday because THEY WERE EVIL.

This calls for a celebration!

First game system I ever owned, I remember wasting so many hours with Tetris, Pokemon, and Super Mario Land on that lovable grey brick. Heh, I bet if I still had it around it would work today too. :3

I was 7. My friend brought his gameboy, and a copy of F1 power pole position or something along those lines. I had to have one. He also had an atari lynx, which was a must have too, but sadly i caved to gameboy because of that f1 racing game.

I had a thick grey brick of my own when I was but a wee lad. It was the first electronic device I'd ever seen be destroyed by gamer rage when my 5 year old sister smacked the screen against her forehead. Heartbreaking it was.

The original Game Boy was the first system I had. Plenty of friends had it, too, which meant lots of borrowing and loaning. That's how I got my first taste of Gargoyle's Quest. Damn, I wish they'd bring back that franchise somehow.

Other great Game Boy memories: I was playing Super Mario Land 2 the last time my family moved houses. Still love that game. Also, until it was unseated by Pokemon Red, Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening seriously didn't leave my GB's cartridge slot for somewhere around two years. I might as well have grafted the thing in there. Pokemon Red was better than Pokemon Blue because...uh...Charizard was on the cover? Your honor, the defense rests.

I had the brick, a green GB pocket, the clear purple GB color, skipped all the GB advance, and currently a DS lite. I love how Destructoid always gets me feeling nostalgic.

I remember when I lost my Gameboy. It fell out of my pocket in a snow bank during the winter and it took my copy of Pokemon Gold with it. I lost it around noon and didn't stop crying until night time.

I got my gigantic, green-screened, gray behemoth (and Super Mario Land) back in 1993, the day my brother was born. I had always wanted one. Good times.

The original Gameboy was the console I ever owned. I got it for Christmas when I was 7 years old. I only ever had Tetris and super Mario Land but back then that was all I needed. Of course I got more games with future versions of the Gameboy,

I'm really surprised that the Game Boy is only the second videogame console to be inducted (The first was the Atari 2600).

My favorite Game Boy memory is playing and beating Kirby's Adventure (the first game I ever played from start to finish in one sitting) during a late-night bus ride one summer at sleepaway camp. I must've stayed awake past 4 AM trying to beat naughty King De De De. Everyone was asleep when I finally won, my triumph and exuberance unnoticed.

Here is something great I found at Disney Land tour.
The TickleMe Plant, It's a real plant that suddenly closes it's leaves and lowers its branches when Tickled, This is real, yet so animated you won't believe your eyes. You can see the video and grow your own at

I had a red Game Boy. It was when Nintendo made different colors for their Play It Loud marketing thing. So many memories... Most notably, Link's Awakening. I think not enough people really think about how awesome Link's Awakening is; no one ever talks about it, yet it's one of my favorite Zelda games of all time.

aww reminds me of my first Gameboy, actually it was the clear purple gameboy color.

I used to hang out with a group of boys when I was growing up, and we were all gamers and used to go to a friend's house and play on his computers (he literally had like 6 computers set up). Well one year for my birthday the guys pitched in and bought me a gameboy color so I can play pokemon.

We still play CS and battlefield when we can. =]

Gameboy Pocket and Pokemon Red for Christmas. That was a freaking awesome year. I played the hell out of it. I actually just bought it both on Amazon for like $30 the other week. Good times.

It's strange ..why it took the judges only this year 2009 to select game boy as the winner.?

It has been one of the pioneer if not the first and the best handheld portable gaming console way back in 90's.

The awarding of GB should be a no-brainer.

I even remember how I felt terribly bad when my schoolmates don't lend me a gameboy..

ahhh, nostalgia!

I remember when I got my first Gameboy. My cousin gave me her (at the time) new Gameboy she had for about a year. I remember popping in Tetris, looking at the incredibly green screen and saying, "This is my life now..." I've been hooked on video games since that day.
