Gamasutra names top 5 developers of 2007 photo

Oh, these top five lists. While they are relevant to the voice of each website that contributes one, sometimes I think their purpose is utterly defeated by the flame wars that follow (including Destructoid's own lists!) Regardless, any list that gets people really thinking about what games mattered to them is a good list indeed, and Gamasutra's does its job. Here's the lowdown:

5. BioWare (Mass Effect)

4. Bungie (Halo 3)

3. 2K Boston/Australia (BioShock)

2. Harmonix (Rock Band/Phase)

1. Valve (Orange Box)

It's amazing to look back on 2007 and realize that we are able to recognize this many developers for stellar efforts this year. It's easy to assume that it just happened to be a great year, but there may be more truth to the idea that gaming is evolving into something bigger than it's ever been -- with the technology avaliable, games are able to compete on a whole new level, earning more respect than ever before.

Bottom line, Roger Ebert (and douchebags like him) may be running out of valid points to argue that games are not art -- and with 2008 just about to begin, who knows what next year could bring. I feel like we could be lucky enough to be standing at the edge of a new era.

[Thanks Jonathan!]

That picture was on the cover of The Stranger...a Seattle magazine for hippies. Did it originate from there or somewhere else? I would be very curious to know the details of that photograph.

Hmmm...there are no Japanese or Euro devs. What was all that about American devs being less creative? Oh right...that was a load of crap.

Pic is awesome.

Nice list, although I don't like the fact that 3 of them are FPS, Nintendo should be somewhere with Mario Galaxy.

Oh, c'mon. Infinity Ward? The Grand Rapids House of Prostitution?

Oops. Nix the second one.

I'd guess they don't include Japanese developers. Especially since they are made up of multiple internal studios, which aren't publicized like some of the ones here.

I'm assuming this is reserved for third and second party developers. Because surely Nintendo would be on there for Galaxy?

BioWare > Bungie. Not even close, IMHO. The rest is about right.

Picture should win an award. I seriously am LOL right now. And Ubisoft Montreal should be on that list. Assassin's Creed was quite good and had more original ideas than Halo 3. Just my opinion of course!

Nintendo deserves to get in for Galaxy, but it's hard to argue with this list. Bungie is a talented studio, regardless of whether you like Halo or not.

Hmmmm...WRONG!

The Top Game sites of 2007:

5. NOT Gamasutra

4. NOT Gamasutra

3. NOT Gamasutra

2. NOT Gamasutra

1. Gamasutra...NOT!

Valve definitely deserves that number 1, not only for the games they create, but how they go about them and the precedent they put forward for PC games, online distribution, and developer publisher relations.

Abysssinians (even if it's mixed with a moggie) FTW!!! Yes Valve definetly deserves number 1, followed by Bioware.

Where the fuck is Nintendo? Super Mario Galaxy is better than every game on that goddamn list as far as I'm concerned, although Valve should still get number 1 for all of their other awesome stuff (like raping GFW Live).

i say take bungie off the list, move bioware to #4, and add ubisoft (assassin's creed) at #5. halo 3 is nowhere near as creative and/or innovative as the others.
