Gabe Newell is a big ol' meanie-head, calls PS3 'a waste of everybody's time' photo

I've always been a fan of Valve. I just picked up The Orange Box for the Xbox 360 yesterday (after having to go to two GameStops, when one was actually *gasp* sold out), and boy ... am I a fan of Valve. So by association, that spills over into a small man-crush on Valve's Gabe Newell.

Sometimes, it's funny when he talks, too. In a recent interview with Edge, Gabe bares his fangs towards the PlayStation 3, yet again:

Edge: A while ago you said that you thought Sony should do a 'do-over' with PS3. Do you still think that?

GN: Absolutely. I think [PS3 is] a waste of everybody’s time. Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There’s nothing there that you’re going to apply to anything else. You’re not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they’ve created. I don’t think they’re going to make money off their box. I don’t think it’s a good solution.

He goes into details about GPUs and CPUs and mentions freon at some point, but all of that stuff is over my head. I just like to play games, and The Orange Box is coming out on the PlayStation 3, right? Someone buy it; let's make sure Valve aren't wasting their time.

Oh, and hexfix is a fucking moron. Dont hate Valve because one of their top guys voices a different opinion then yours. Thats just being a fuckwad. And if you decide not to pick up Orange Box because of Gabe's comment than youre stupid, and youre missing out on an amazing game

It's not about being offended, it's about being feed BS, and expected to just believe it... everyone needs to stop taking this personally, and realize that it's not an attack on fanboyisim, but instead, an exaggerated excuse for not getting millions in support and hand holding free from sony in order to sell millions upon millions in game revenue and not give a nickel back.

At least, that's what it seems... they wanted sony to hold their hands, to give them prebuilt dev tools, instead of building their own and making getting on top of things, like the UT people always do. I wonder if they hired idiots for their sony team and the people they hired sucked air up their azzes?.. que serah, I'm outta this one, it's getting a little too emotional in here...

i bought a mac, because windows cannot do tight midi serial or usb, the mac can, and i make music first and foremost. i hate vista, its buggy handcuffed drm nightmare. 360, vista, and zune. need i say more. i will never be a pc gamer again. vista made me buy a mac and a ps3. that simple..

pc gaming is dead to me. why on earth would i want to buy a new motherbaord and video card every time they change the pci bus, or agp pci xpress bs. not to mention, i spend 400 + every year to play 1 or 2 games on the pc. NO THANKS. i'd rather spend 400 on ps3 and play 15 good games a year without the head aches of a lame os.... on a console that doesnt break down and red ring.

the choice is simple.

@hexfix:
"windows cannot do midi over serial or usb" Are you smoking crack? I do all my midi over usb, and it works fine.

"vista made me buy a mac and a ps3" I can understand the Mac, I personally like Macs, but cmon a ps3? How can Vista make you buy a ps3?

How i test for midi jitter.

I hook up a drum machine or synth. in this case the boss dr-880 drum machine. sent 16th notes at 140 bpm to it from logic out one of the channels. recorded about 3 bars worth in. then i would load the wav file i loaded into wavelab, then i would get rid of the space at the begining put the begining of the first sample at 0.

Now, simply write down where each sample begins super zoomed in.

here is what i got on my test:

0, 108, 215, 322, 429, 537, 644, 751, 858, 956 etc etc etc... each number is the beginning of a sample.

Now, subtract like this. 215 subtracted by 108 = 107, 322 subtracted by 215 = 107, 429 subtracted by 322 = 107. etc etc.

no you see how its the same number, later on i get an 108, but thats it, i only got 107 and 108. a 1ms difference in time between each on average. That is how i did this test. Thanks to mr Todd Loomis for devising the test...

So if you want to test your midi, do so.

With my macbook pr, logic 8 express, amt8, fireface 800, i get 1ms of midi jitter on this test.

do the test. i promise it will spit out shit on your pc....

yawn. cant wait for the psn update with everyday shooter. i can see xbox 360 has quality titles and i'll get one when ninja gaiden 2 and left for dead are released. I'll also get the quality games people are playing now for a cheaper price. As far as ps3 goes, i'm having fun on it and could care less about the bullshit people talk. i have plenty of friends who all own 360s that come over for some warhawk gaming all the time. also most of the 3rd party games like skate, cod4, asassins creed are coming out on both systems so i dont have any complaints whatsoever.

As far as developing on the ps3 is concerned, microsoft has their balls in a vise grip. These are the guys who made fucking visual studio, directX and .NET. XNA allows ANYONE to develop games in visual studio and play them on their 360, Sony can't beat that, they are a hardware company.

Haha, I wanted to get on the bash hexfix93 train, it has been a fun ride thus far... Back to the quote: you are different just like everyone else. Congratulations on your epiphany about being a unique snowflake, but lets be realistic here... you are the same as every other windows-hating clueless fanboi piece of shit that regurgitates an opinion to the online tubes. You've said nothing that is unique; you've said quite a few things that are ignorant.

Why pledge allegiance to any one system? I pledge my allegiance to gaming in general. I'll play whatever is good and I can afford. I don't care about company history, mascots, or the infamous "next-gen" adjective. Right now TF2 is good, and if you're a real gamer with a chance to play it why skip over it because you didn't like the opinion of a big man?

Hey may be a genius and he may be a leader in the industry, and he may be a revolutionary designer (all of which I agree with) but by ousting and ostracizing a significant percentage of the hardcore fans of video games (the so called "sony" crowd and their expensive "waste of time"), he's long ago stopped being the most important thing of all...

A gamer... Isn't that what you are?

Stop attaching each other, and finding attacks in what others said (and stop calling people noobs, it's played, we know it...), this is what makes the game public look like children. We need to agree or disagree, not go into the fat jokes, not critique each others ability, but give our point on the subject, and listen to each others point, and debate them... and if you can't do that, I'm gonna have my dad come over to your house and beat up your dad, how about that?

He was talking about how Sony designed the PS3, its architecture. In case you haven't noticed, the average game that comes out on both systems tends to run and look better on the 360, because it's a more stable, typical, familiar design. It's insanely hard to design and optimize for the PS3's layout, and all that complication in the world isn't doing Sony any good if nobody can make a game that takes advantage of it. It's in a similar technical space as far as consoles go to the Sega Saturn; Sega, for whatever reason, designed the system's graphical hardware to process four sided polygons, not three. This renders in an extremely different way than the standard three sided polygons, and it meant that for ports to and from the Saturn, all artwork had to be redone, all rendering engines had to be reprogrammed from scratch, and almost every aspect of making and displaying graphics had to be relearned by the developers.
The only real technical advantage the PS3's design has is the extra space of the Blu-Ray disc.

This of course is a TECHNICAL complaint, not one about the system as a whole, its performance, its games, or its fanbase, so stop taking it personally, you little shits.

Man... gotta love all the people who love their PS3 so much that they're willing to alienate a company, and anyone who speaks ill of it, just to defend themselves against a simple opinion. I wish people had that sort of dedication to things that mattered...

IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT! DON'T BUY IT. BUT STOP BITCHING ABOUT THE PS3, STOP BITCHING ABOUT PEOPLE BITCHING ABOUT THE PS3! This thread is full of epic fail. Feel free to boycot Valve for their opinions, it won't be the first time a company was hurt by PR.

As to all the people bitching that Valve doesn't want to learn the PS3 hooks. What's the problem with that? Developers are lazy. That's what we were trained to be. I think someone hit it on the head when they said M$ did it right. Shit like visual studio, XNA, DirectX, it's all for ease of development. M$ cares more about publisher/developer relations, while Sony cares more about raw power. Which you prefer is a personal preference, but it is a pretty obvious choice to go with cheap and easy over hard and expensive. Find a single for profit organization that is actively searching for ways to make their work harder, with no guarentee that it'll positively effect their profits.

If anything, I'm more worried about his Wii comment. Why the fuck would Valve need to do shit on the Wii. The Wii demographic and teh Valve demographic are too separate I think. (And this is coming from a Nintendo Fanboy who's eagerly awaiting more games)

Wait... He complained about the move to multicore on the XBox 360 because a hardware issue (single thread performance) is now a software issue (parallelization of code). Since Valve makes software, the move to multiple cores makes their job more difficult, since there's more software to write.

How exactly does this make the PS3's SPEs fare worse than the 360's multiple CPU cores? Does Valve have a problem just because the PS3 has 7 vector cores and the 360 has 3 (one for each CPU)? What about the advantage of having so many vector cores but only one CPU, so you have fewer control threads to worry about? Multiple co-processors are easier to manage than multiple CPUs.

It sounds to me like Valve is taking the easy way out -- designating a CPU core exclusively for one type of task (like physics). That's easy... and inefficient. A proper management system would break down tasks into packets and then those are executed independently of each other via a scheduler. With the right engine, I would think that the lack of power in the main CPU might be a problem, but the tasks wouldn't be harder to manage, overall.

Without a proper management system, you run into massive problems when you add more cores. Hence, the problems with 360 ports running like crap on the PS3. Are developers even trying?

I think the real problem here is that the software guys were like Intel: they expected faster single-core CPUs. Nobody has put any serious thought into massively parallel processing, and now everyone is in a panic because they don't know the optimal way of doing it. With actual product budgets at stake, now is not the time to experiment -- they want to port their PC engines and make software NOW.

Is there some kind of new rule where people don't have to work for their profits, anymore? Ah, yes, that's Nintendo's siren song.

Sign the Petiton to get Sony to recgnise what their customers want!!
www.bokz.com

I will briefly explain my position so the rich idiots with no kids dont just flame me without reading my page.

I have a 4 and 6yr old. I have over 200 ps2 games which they love to play.
I cannot easily have two consoles cabled up and my kids cannot swap cables on their own!
Very good games are still being released for the ps2 and they are cheaper than the PS3
Ps3 games are extremely limited in number
I would buy a 60gig ps3 if the BC worked properly, but unfortunately the morons at sony couldnt even get that right and it wont support half our games and many that it does support lose a lot of functionality.
yes I want to play ps3 games but not at the sacrifice of PS2, and many are in a similar position. If Sony dont make a BC compatible console, there are thousands of us that will just buy something different, and cheaper with more games.

If you are one of these please sign my petition!!!

i have owned 3 ps2s, and they never broke down. and fixing a lazer that gets un calibrated is not that hard to fix, even an am-mature could fix it. not the case in the 360. i never once had a problem with any model of the ps2 i have owned, and i played a lot of games on those systems.. never had a problem...

i'm boycotting all of valves bs. one map for for the capture the flag, gimme a friggen break. what a joke. lame old game, i bought half life 3 years ago, im not paying for it again. screw those guys, and it is not the best game of all time. BS

the best game of all time is star control 2 on the 3d0. kiss my ass..
