I've always been a fan of Valve. I just picked up The Orange Box for the Xbox 360 yesterday (after having to go to two GameStops, when one was actually *gasp* sold out), and boy ... am I a fan of Valve. So by association, that spills over into a small man-crush on Valve's Gabe Newell.
Sometimes, it's funny when he talks, too. In a recent interview with Edge, Gabe bares his fangs towards the PlayStation 3, yet again:
Edge: A while ago you said that you thought Sony should do a 'do-over' with PS3. Do you still think that?
GN: Absolutely. I think [PS3 is] a waste of everybody’s time. Investing in the Cell, investing in the SPE gives you no long-term benefits. There’s nothing there that you’re going to apply to anything else. You’re not going to gain anything except a hatred of the architecture they’ve created. I don’t think they’re going to make money off their box. I don’t think it’s a good solution.
He goes into details about GPUs and CPUs and mentions freon at some point, but all of that stuff is over my head. I just like to play games, and The Orange Box is coming out on the PlayStation 3, right? Someone buy it; let's make sure Valve aren't wasting their time.

i bought a ps3 for blue ray, ps2, ps3 games, to watch videos streamed from my dnla server on my mac. this is what next gen is to me, hd media center! that plays great games, free net, online gaming that doesnt suck and and has dedicated servers unlike 360 live bs.
to me a console that breaks every time a good game comes out is a complete waste of money. or a system with last gen graphics ps2 ports and gimmicky controls is a waste of money even if its just 250... sure the wii has a gob of games that are exclusive, but how many of them are actually deep and good? i bet 0. metroid and zelda..

he is just crying because its not a simple port... he wants stuff all the same architecture.. so Wii, gamecube, ps2, dreamcast, etc needs a do-over according to him too.

For the record, I <3 my PS3.
What the real problem is that he still thinks that the PC market will support and love them forever, even though many PC gamers are making choices on console. This could kill half Valve if EA does it wrong, and leaves 1/3 to 2/5ths (depending on which marketing report you read) with a crappy, ea server, non-steam multiplayer version...
Here's to hoping that EA does just a good job as the last ports they handled...
Then we'll never have to hear from gabe again, he'll be at the I-10 overpass looking for change and cigarettes.

With regards to media center...there is nothing better then a 360. Xbox live is the best online experience bar none. Yeah ps3 has blue ray...and yet who gives a flying fuck...dvd's are fine with me.

Where's Orange Box? Where's Unreal? I haven't seen much 3rd party multiplatform games come out that are better on PS3.

Do you remember the original XBOX? It had more features than PS2, but was still at the bottom, loosing to the PS2. Custom tracks, hard drive, online gaming (that worked), but it had a small games library! Don't be a hypocrite.

i am playing oblivion too. i love heavenly sword as well. waiting for call of duty 4, drake, rachet, haze, etc.
i love my ps3. and it is delivering for me. i'm not the type that runs out and buys everything, i only want to play the cream of the crop stuff. and the ps3 has way more of that from way better studios like naughty dog, insomniac etc etc...

This isn't about hard or not, that's all smoke and mirrors, how many other game makers overcame that and are trying to pump out games? Haze, AC... even 1-to-1 releases like The Simpsons.. Or when the PS2 came out and everyone had to redo their developement stratagies... no, He's biased for some other reason, and wants to blame it on something... it's that simple, because if not, valve is filled slowly devolving programmers, who want to stick to one thing, not learning and creating, but instead stagnating.
This isn't about it being HARD, don't fool yourself, it's about personal and professional bias, pure and simple, stop arguing the specs as a point people. We could point to specs all day, not gonna change what's in each box... and wasn't valve awarded some inovation awards years back? Can we ask for them back now that they've stopped that bother sum practice.

Well, whatever. I just finished the last level of Halo 3 about 20 minutes ago (bought it late), and can't think of anything on PS3 that would give me the feeling I was having. What tech is better is irrelevant. BioShock and Halo 3 blew me away like nothing else.
You prefered PS2 over XBox (as did I), that's proof that tech doesn't come into it. Xbox had more potential but the games just weren't there. I think the reverse is quite true this gen.
As for your Mac comment hexfix....... yeah... that's what we need, a high end company catering to the shitty ass mac community that is currently nothing more than Intel parts and Unix software. Let apple have their iPod market, but the gaming market is not something macs can handle.

@SavedHeart: iD has fallen from their prime. They no longer create quality games, but remake crap with new graphics and call it revolutionary. The Source Engine and the crytech engine both blew the shit out of the doom 3 engine.
Plus, when did he say the PS3 was hard. It's harder than the PC and 360, which is an absolute, unarguable truth. It's a newer technology, and one which Valve specifically has no experience with. Maybe they should start working on porting it to the Phantom too... When you run a multi-billion dollar business, you can make the choice of investing in the PS3. Until then... take the decision, or leave it.
sony ps3 will sell 300 million ps3s in 8 years. i would bet money on that... HD is the big new thing, people will want HD movies and gaming all from one box in one package. bye bye nintendo and microsoft. why? because ps3 was the only next gen console this time around...
Those complaining about the games. I have more games on my PS3 than I can manage this fall. If you're ripping through these games in days and getting bored you're either without a life or just that good. That just means you need more than one system. In my experience it seems to me that Sony's fall lineup is pretty quality stuff. Warhawk is great fun. Heavenly Sword is pretty as hell and has an epic story. Ratchet and Clank should be good. That's at least three exclusive titles out there this fall. I'm still not finished playing Heavenly Sword and Warhawk will keep me busy for a long time.
On topic though. Gabe's economic argument does make sense. From a business standpoint it would be way better to build a game for both the 360 and PC simultaneously and just port the code in a compiler and be done. You'd have a little more work to tweak the controller systems, but you wouldn't have to build two games from scratch.
I believe that Sony has a huge responsibility to make coding for the Cell easier and more efficient. If they don't put out some quality kits for 3rd parties to get their stuff out, their market share will drop even more. At that point the PS3 will be useful as a Blu-Ray player and little else. And, that's only a good thing if Blu-Ray wins out over HDDVD and digital distribution.
I honestly don't think that Sony will let this happen. I think they had their asses handed to them and they're working to fix it around the clock, while at the same time trying to save face by not apologizing. At least that's how I see it.
Also, Gabe is a whiney bitch.
hell, insomniac gave us resistance which was good, now they have a new rachet game out next month all ready, tell me, how come they can do it and all valve can do is complain about next gen and re box the same game.... valve has lost all my respect... all of it..

If they don't want to, then just say so, but don't make it that it's too hard to program for (which is almost a direct quote) or a waste of time to do (because your fans own them, get over it..). Again, I call for gabe to man up, and just tell us what's got his thong stuck up his butt... not feed us some BS and shine it with a xbox rag.

As far as DVD-BluRay, think back to the arguments people used to have about VHS-DVD? Same old story. I play on an extremely nice TV with an extremely nice surround sound system, and the difference for me between DVD and BluRay is drastic. I'm sorry that your 13" TV/VCR combo doesn't allow you to experience all the benefits of BluRay.

Gabe is simply talking about the money/business side of things. Some companies dont want to touch the PS3 due to the high cost of entry. Does that mean the PS3 is a terrible system? No. Its just expensive to get into, and for Gabe, thats why he didnt want to touch it.
Besides, why cant we all just get along and love all systems. I love my 360 because of the sweet games for it, I love my Wii because of the sweet games I have for it, and I want to buy a PS3 because of the sweet games it has. Why hate, when it feels so much better to love?
