In the most recent official PlayStation blog post, SCEA teased future additions that build on what Microsoft plans to unleash upon its Xbox LIVE masses tomorrow.
The next big PS3 firmware update -- v3.10 -- is adding Facebook support to the service’s list of free features, allowing users to connect their respective profiles and stream Trophy and PS Store information to their Facebook accounts.
If that wasn’t enough, the update is to also provide hooks to developers so they can offer their own special updates to a connected user’s Facebook News Feed.
Facebook -- as planned -- is coming to LIVE tomorrow via an app within the New Xbox Experience dashboard. It will allow players to look at pictures, update their feeds and otherwise do their Facebook thing. It won’t, however, allow players to stream game information to their accounts like this planned PS3 firmware update.
At least, not yet it won’t.
There is more stuff coming with the latest PSN update, including much-needed Friends List tweaks. Make sure to hit the PlayStation blog if you're down with this kind of stuff, or watch the embedded video below for a video teaser of the update.
I wonder why Sony isn't making a big deal about this. At least not as big a deal as Microsoft made when they announced it at E3. Both will be fun to do though, as another outlet for facebook is always fun.
So let me get this straight. MS made a big deal about Facebook and Twitter, and here comes Sony and actually does it right? I.E. Trophy info, purchases games, etc.
Well done, Sony. Show MS how it's done. I can't wait until you guys are feature complete with Live. Sony will force MS' hand to make Gold Free. Or get MS to start cloud storage for save games. Something needs to happen
Wow, now THAT'S how facebook on the Xbox SHOULD be! This fall update has been awful and halfassed. Last.fm is the only thing i'm looking forward to from it now. The PS3 is looking very tempting since it seems they actually know what the right way to integrate technologies are.
"It won’t, however, allow players to stream game information to their accounts like this planned PS3 firmware update."
Actually Microsoft displayed this functionality with Tiger Woods at E3 (from a development point of view, the 360 one appears to be more in depth as it relies on Facebooks application platform to do this while the Sony one seems to go through Sony first, though I'm not sure here).
If it's going to be updating my profile with trophies and what I've bought on PSN, that's a guarantee that I will NOT use it. I'm not sure why people want to broadcast their geekdom to everyone in their social biosphere. Maybe it's just me?
Well, since PSN is free and you don't have to pay for extra "features", you don't have to hype the hell out of it. But if you have a service that continuously looks over-priced and lacks a good amount of "exclusive features", of course you would want to hype the shit out of an addational feature that tries and help justify the price. Not saying Live is bad. I love it. But Sony has it right with allowing everyone enjoy AT LEAST multiplayer. MS needs to drop the Live price, or make just multiplayer portion free.
How I thought it worked was some 360 games feature the ability to track that particular games progress with achievements being updated on FB when they are achieved.
Where as the PS3 one seems to allow it with all games, and your current profiles trophy ammounts. Just what I thought MS meant anyhow
You know why Sony isn't making a big deal, GiftofGab? Because this kind of support doesn't matter. Microsoft assumes its huge, but it's just a stupid patch.
its a nice gesture, but like most people agree, i really want that cross game chat from sony, because i've been dying to talk to my friends, who all have bluetooth headsets. The problem is the XMB currently doesn't really flow, like the dashboard does. if your playing a game your friends are playing, it notifies you, if your watching a movie, it actually says "watching a movie."
also, does anyone know in what situations the ps3 actually does background downloading of games/movies? i know it doesn't do it during dvd playback, and certain games..
The background downloading happens when you're not playing a game that has online play (so very few actually) also you dont need to be signed in to your account to continue to download, so you could sign out and play games without interrupting your downloads. It stops the moment you sign back in and use online multiplayer though.
Also, these features are only SOME of the things for this update so the cross game chat is still possible. I for one like the new features and even though I wont be using all of them, is nice to know they're there, maybe for future reference. It's always better to have more things...
lol maybe its just me but why the fuck would anyone care what you are playing seems as useless as tweeting your progress...
i just think this is useless i mean ps3 already has a web browser what else do you really need. then again i am probably one of the last human being that does not have a facebook account just hate the concept i got msn no need for anything else maybe its teen thing.. guess i am getting old /me goes checking for bald spots
I do not have Facebook, It looks to be 5 mimutes of ''New Toy'' excitement to Facebook users, but this makes me livid that Sony has once again delivered a app with ZERO GAMING APPLICATION like Photo Album instead of the 2 things we keep asking for: Cross Game Chat and Universal Music
@LionheartAce
I guess if automatic Facebook updates aren't the main feature, I don't see what the point is. Oh boy, I get to see snippets of what my friends are doing by awkwardly navigating with my controller. Pass the confetti.
Facebook on XBL sucks, and I don't see this being any better. Game-related updates are annoying (if I wanted to know what trophies you got, I would look it up on PSN; it's just one more app I have to block on the site), yet without them, it's a useless app just like the Xbox one.
I don't mean to whine; I know this doesn't hurt me in any way, but I'm just having trouble seeing why this is being hyped. Media integration can be awesome sometimes. This is not one of those cases.
Sony is deliberately holding back cross-game chat, just to piss you off personally. I mean, if it was up to you, it'd be up and running by now, right? It's just as simple as wanting it to be. Clearly.
Every post about PS3 now makes me sad, my black box'o blu ray YLoD'd. I now have a 360, and I'm waiting on my fixed PS3 but it's just not the same without it... I miss you. 360 is pretty fun though, the GUI is a little baffling at times though, took me a few days to realise there was a Zune Video Marketplace that actually has movies on it....
Sorry irrelevant post. Go social networking apps, hip hip hooray *lame*.
Universal music - Assume you mean like while playing games? - (correct me if I'm wrong here) The basic system for doing so has been patented/copywritten by Microshaft, if I remember correctly. Dick move M$, dick move. PS3 developers need to put the integration into the game code, like killzone allows you to play tunes while playing multiplayer, and Wipeout HD lets you pick a playlist to go with your game, why more devs don't bother is beyond me.
Cross game chat - i wouldn't be suprised if it has the same problem. Microshaft really used that early lead they got by rushing out a borked console to put up every hurdle possible for Sony - surely you don't need to hinder your competition at every turn if you're really the best?!
Again i think we're looking at a wall of "not important in Japan" here. These things that Western gamers (xbox gamers looking to badmouth the PSN specifically) see as essential are obviously not important in the PS3's homeland or they would have been included from day 1.
I personally couldn't give a fuck about cross game chat, and not being able to listen to music blaring over the carefully created soundscapes of game doesn't bother me one bit.
I mean, guys we can video conference with friends from all over the world - superb quality too, and we don't need to pay through the fucking nose for a "special" HDD to put all of our music on, not to mention our ability to play almost any music/video file type, even straight off a USB drive.
Microshaft - see value in perceived value. Add features cheaply to increase perceived value and trick moar people into paying for LIVE.
Sony - see value in tangable features, blu-ray, blue tooth, WiFi, etc etc etc, Facebook is not a biggie, here you go, have some free Facebook.
@mackie junior it was only really hyped by Microsoft. PSN just up and went, "Hey, here's the next update. You can auto feed to Facebook and stuff... also, we fixed the friends list. Sorry about that."
I'm not big on facebooj but this sounds interesting aleast. Of course I'd rather Sony spend time improving the party system but I guess that's not gonna happen.
Not a big facebook user, you think a gaming console would come with updates centered around the gaming experience, and not the social network. But, hey, what do I know?
Another big grin forms on my face as I use all the awesome stuff my PS3 does, and apart from games it's not cost me a penny since I bought it.
Do want one of those 500Gb HDD's off ebay though, but £50 is essentially a new game, and you can't play a HDD. Still, 25Gb free will do me for now and i'm pretty on top with HDD space cleaning, being able to re-DL anything from the store is handy.
Awesome. I constantly use Facebook. Next add an integrated Facebook app that we can also access in game through the XMB, allowing us to chat, post, add photos, videos, etc and the ability to find friends through Facebook with PSN ID’s. In the future maybe add support for Promotional Items recorded in game footage to also be added to Facebook. I know you can access it through the PS3 web browser but its sluggishly slow and painful.

Really enjoy your blog reading and it would inspire me to well comment on this. Also would share about self adhesive labelling. Perhaps Sony doesn't think it's that big of a deal?
I admit, it is kinda strange that Sony hasn't said anything, but I also thought it was strange that Microsoft would talk about it as much as they did.
