Full DS game downloads coming to Wii network

Full DS game downloads coming to Wii network photo
     Nintendo

Everyone remember about a month ago when Nintendo announced their "Everyone's Nintendo Channel"? It featured videos, interviews, and -- seemingly most importantly -- DS demos for wireless download. Yeah? Fantastic. Most people, on hearing about "Everyone's Nintendo Channel" remarked that it was a fairly neat idea, and that it had potential, that being of full DS title downloads.

Those keen eyed oracles of inevitable development are soon to be rewarded with a round of watercooler gloatery, thanks to Reggie Fils-Aime. The New York Times reports the Nintendo exec of stating full DS title download via the Wii is soon to come and further makes mention of a "new DS device" saying specifically, "Mr. Fils-Amie said that future DS device will be more tightly integrated with its Wii console. Complete games as well as game samplers will be able to be downloaded into the Wii using its broadband connection, and then transferred wirelessly to the DS."

Not only will full titles be available for download, but puzzle expansions for titles such as Professor Layton and the Curious Village will also be made available, along with (I'm sure) additional content expansions for other upcoming games. The expansion and progression of interactivity between the Wii and DS is likely to continue the domination the DS has been enjoying as top selling hand held. Now if only we could get better titles for the thing, I might be able to use it as something other than a portable Geometry Wars player.

yeah, plat farming in Guild Wars is where it's at yo!... or not. Anyone explain to me how i'm going to have a full sized game on the DS? They were on about this regarding that Super Mario Galaxy DS hoax, that the DS's memory couldn't handle a full game... so how is this going to work?

Demos though, now that would be neat. I only buy DS games that are cheap/second hand, or from companies i like (Atlus for example), so never get to try out anything else.

I remember Edge saying something about Nintendo releasing a flash card device.

The ironic thing is I would probably be able to download the firmware and put it the r4 I don't have anyway.
Here's to piracy.

I've been here a long time but I'm not exactly sure how this works... I wrote about this four days ago in my C-Blog and sent it in as my first tip that same day:

http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/ShadowXOR/downloadable-content-coming-to-the-nintendo-ds--62116.phtml

If they don't give credit, that's cool, but for some reason I thought they did. Oh well, it doesn't really matter.

Does anyone know if this guy was here before, like Tron/Jon?

Great post Qais.

As for citing -- Cblogs are extremely hard to get a handle on for editors, since there's an average of about 1000 posted a week (gasp). Most staff have cblogs and participate though. As soon as we introduce the tagging system your cblog articles will get automatically credited in most cases, which will be great because people will see various perspectives on a topic. Its something I'm definitely working to address.

@Niero:

Thanks for the reply. I knew it was too much for them to go sifting through the blogs. I was just confused since I sent it in as a tip four days ago (hence, they didn't have to sift for mine) but I'm glad to hear that you're working on a solution.

@Qais Fulton:

You're complaining about a lack of good DS games? Really? Not off to a good start my friend...

I already do that. But with my computer. Nintendo is always so fucking slow to do anything. I remember hearing about download DS demos before the system even came out. There are just now thinking about getting around to it. How long with Japan have it before the rest of the world? I guess that would be up to those Japanese bigwigs that hate anyone not Japanese.
skullivan's Avatar
skullivan at 01/03/2008 10:27
The problem with downloads is that they aren't going to make the games any cheaper than they are in the store or else they'll piss off retailers. I'm not about to pay $30, or even $25 for a DS game download.
