Front Mission Evolved screens confirm cockpit, lady pilot photo

It's been a long time coming, but the robot game dry spell that has bedeviled sci-fi fans for the longest time may be coming to an end. Front Mission Evolved, Square Enix's action-oriented, er, evolution of the classic strategy franchise is due in September.

That wait might still be a little long for some, but now we've got a few screenshots to tide us over. And they're quite educational, as they confirm that yes, girls do pilot big war machines, that someone threw away their last chance to save themselves, and that Wanzer cockpits are actually quite roomy. It's a bit surprising, considering how cramped the typical fighter-jet or tank cockpit is.

While I've my own mild reservations about seeing another turn-based strategy franchise try out the real-time tip, I'm actually rather excited about Front Mission Evolved. Are you?

Check out our exclusive Q&A preview of the game here.

Some-one threw away their chance of survival by letting girls pilot war machines?

Glad this is due soon, as I'd like it to do well. Square need more good action games in their stable. Looks like between FME and Kane and Lynch 2, they're going to get more money from me. Nice.

Damn, there hasn't been much hype for this game (at least from what I've seen). I've only seen one trailer and it didn't even show any gameplay...

I played the SNES Front Mission game (well, one of them if there were sequels) and it was pretty damn awesome turn-based strategy. It's a shame they're moving away from that since there's already an abundance of shooter-type games on the market today (although not so many concerning mechs).

As I love the idea of piloting a giant robot (who doesn't?), I hope this game turns out to be really good...

If anyone can direct me to more information / articles/ what-have-you about this game, I will be very thankful.

Nope. I want my Wanzers taking their damn turns destroying each other...dammit! Honestly if its done right it could be better than the Armored Core series, and I'd be more than happy with that. Here's hoping.

Haven't seen enough about this to get a good sense of whether the gameplay will make this one worth a purchase. It's looking kinda Dynasty Warriors Gundamy, I'm afraid to say.

While I don't want to get in trouble with my ex-employers for saying anything too inflammatory, I will say this: for the love of god wait for the reviews.

I'm a mech junkie and my fingers crossed for Square knocking one out of the park with this game. FM3 was one of my favorite strategy titles in its day (and can't show up soon enough among the PSOne classics) and a strategic squad-based online FM game would be wicked cool.

For oversized cockpits, the ME109 in Iron Eagle III was criminally wrong. The show's Token Fat Guy had enough room to play basketball in there. In reality the jerries had to pick smaller-than-average dudes just so they'd fit.

I really want this game to be good, but I just cant see it happening. Perhaps if it were tactical and grid based like the old ones, but as a shooter.... it just looks like Armored Core minus the insane stat management and customization.

Meh. I'm more into the slow action-sim Mechwarrior than the speedy action-sim Armored Core.

That, and I don't expect much from Double Helix.

I'd prefer a turn-based FM most definitely, but I doubt there have been huge changes to the design since the first FM. I really like the sRPG framework, but a lot of games are kinda boring inside of it.

To be fair, this isn't the first time Front Mission has gone all 3rd-person action gamey. Check here http://www.frontmission.info/ for the full scoop.
As for me, I'm pretty excited for this. The gameplay footage I saw looked pretty damned cool, and I'll be pre-ordering right quick. Especially since doing so gets ya 2 classic wanzers.
