From NextLust: Use your Mac for your Wii photo

Straight from sister site NextLust, here's some info on using your Mac to pimp out your somewhat limited Wii:

Even though the Wii is able to play video files off an SD card through the Wii’s photo channel, the formats it can handle are pretty limited. That’s where Wii Transfer for the Mac comes in. Similar to programs like iSquint which format any video to the iPod spec, Wii Transfer converts your video files into something the Wii can handle. It’s also able to stream your music from iTunes through the (still beta) Internet Channel. Here’s a full list of features:

  • Show album cover artwork in the music sharing interface — new in version 2.1.
  • Share MP3 music and pictures to your Wii over local network.
  • Convert movies for playing in Wii’s Photo Channel.
  • Copy movies to SD card automatically if connected.
  • Browse and convert iTunes video podcasts from within Wii Transfer.
  • AppleScript support for automated conversions.
  • Backup saved game files to your Mac automatically.
It’s rare a program for the Mac pops up like this, and though it can’t handle HD and isn’t nearly as refinded as the capabilities of the 360 or PS3, if you own and Wii and are looking to watch videos on it, it’s a good way to go. It’s $9 through the end of January, and it’s available to download here.

Just noticed that, this thing has been posted here before and someone advised to use Orb instead. Only problem i had with Orb was that it kept putting icons in my system tray and made a real mess out of it.

Essentially, the whole way of thinking behind Nintendo and Apple are actually opposite. Apple is more like Sony and Microsoft is more like Nintendo.

Also, the DS (and now Wii) Wi-Fi adapter only works on XP.

For all you Mac users who don't have a wireless router and also refuse to boot into Windows just to take your Wii online, here's a solution:

I'm using it right now, no problems at all. (I would just use a wireless router, but my college's connection doesn't play nice with it.)

It's not rare at all, Summa. It's just that no one cares about us Mac users. I have Connect360 that can stream HD movies, and now this.

Software sounds nice, but I despise most shareware. Most of it isn't really worth the purchase, and they're really just charging for something most people wouldn't charge for (iSquint, for example. I appreciate that the author provides it free, and a far more feature-full software for purchase). I'll stick to hacking together some shell script to convert videos, when I get my Wii, because I got bash skills.

@ Kif

I agree. OSX rocks. I can get any software I want on it. Wow, Connect360 lets you stream HD movies? Brilliant! I thouhgt it only did songs and music.

Connect360 rocks.. You just need to download flip4mac as well and put your WMV files into your 'movies' folder, then you can watch videos from your mac through the 360.

Google reader or any other rrs reader that works from your browser should do the trick.
