FNF Quake semi-finals start, win a MAINGEAR PC by raffle photo

Destructoid's Quake Live tournament goes into Semi-Finals this week, as six players go head-to-head to battle for $9,000 in Cyberpower gaming computers. Our admins lost sleep all weekend, sifting through all of your dispute tickets and weeding out suspicious activity (you know who you are!). That said, congratulations to these six players for not only rocking but keeping it on the level.  Here's what the tentative schedule looks like:

Torzelan VS. Weird

Gandhi VS. Forn1x

hardboiled777 VS. HawtPawkitHero

Players, check your email for schedules. Also, a cosmic congratulations to Rogue Squee, our Cosmic Cannon winner, who will be receiving a mysterious swag pack with games & squishy stuff (that we have no photo of).

Next up: Win a MAINGEAR pc *even if you ROYALLY SUCK*

We also went through everyone's feedback and are changing the way we give out the next few prizes.  The third prize PC will actually be given away at random!  All you have to complete a Call of Duty 4 match against another Dtoider on your choice of platform: we're allowing consoles for this round.  The more you play against a unique person (not the same dude over and over) the more raffle tickets you get towards a PC. Competitive players will be battling for these top two ridiculously powerful MAINGEAR gaming PCs.

We invite you to check out our games section for more details.  Thanks everyone for your support and good luck at your match!

A note about the change in players in the semi-finals from the leaderboard

As stated in our FAQs, the leaderboard is merely our computer's best estimate of the top players.  It is NOT the final say in who competes in the semi finals, as we are constantly combing the system for exploits. In judging the quality of matches (did you know we reconcile all wins by hand?) we have identified that at least four player accounts were created for the specific purpose of losing over and over to a few individuals for the purpose of augmenting their scores.  We have obtained proof that this was the purpose and design of these players, so we have responded by (1) invalidating those wins and (2) opening admin disputes against the players, which do affect their scores.

There is no sport on earth where players can recruit opponents to intentionally lose to propel their stats, so these players were blacklisted from the event.  Players who engaged in this were given a warning, and no bannings have occured as of this update.  Please note that we take this event very seriously and all players caught engaging in such activities will be immediately removed.  If you have ANY problems with ANY part of the experience please do contact our fnfsupport@destructoid.com and we will do our best for you.

@chibsquad
Yes, you do that, call CyberPower and Intel, make good on your threat. Otherwise shut up.

@Danmartigan there's no reason why they would do anything like that. If anything, the shitty players who know they can't win would be the ones manipulating the system. Are you SURPRISED that tops players like, Chance, Dahang, and Boots are in the REAL top 6? Really? Is that a surprise?

Saying they cheated proves how little you know about the competition. You know why the top 6 is bullshit? Because someone named HawtPawkitHero is in it. Someone who I was destroying in warmup, who then quit, said he didn't want to play me, because he didn't want a loss on his account. It's bullshit like that which made this system so flawed.

What SHOULD of been done is a FAIR, and NORMAL bracket system. Double elimination, and matches. None of this schoolyard "YOURE TOO GOOD GO AWAY" bullshit.

When a website runs a tournament, it's to get people on the website. Players play where the competition is. If you think they need some emotional tie-in to the website in order to compete, you're extremely naive or just moronic.

Sorry I'm insulting your previous casual gaming website, but when it tries to act like it's running a serious tournament, and does bullshit like this, there's little to no respect to be given for it.

Nice posts guys, they're totally going to want to do anything like this again. Especially when they get threats. Way to go!

Also Gillz chill dude, this isn't ESR...
I "would never ever be removed" since I played the entire two weeks (mostly in the beginning though), played all games properly and uploaded every screenshot, played against so many different people of which a large chunk were actual Destructoiders, and thought I was fairly nice ever asking to play with the ping advantage twice out of 45 games (and my loss came from returning the favor).

There really isn't anything dodgy unlike the people popping up last minute playing a ton of games of which many were against the same opponent over and over, and against players who seemed to just sign up to lose to one guy and not play any more. I don't have any deeper insight in that though and didn't complain, but it seems reasonable that players weren't just removed for fun.

The only thing me being an actual part of this community has to do with anything is playing from the beginning (which I wasn't alone in anyway). No idea why bias is being called anyway but there's no reason there would be any. I've been following this site for ages and love it to bits, but with 351 comments in years of being here I'm fairly anonymous and not exactly in a special position.

Finally yep, Weird (a top dueller) will of course beat me since he's been playing this game for so much longer and has an insane head start on me who didn't even come from Q3. I've played against him in duel and I've played with him in the same clan for team deathmatch, and I know all I can hope for is to put on a good show if this is going to be broadcast. I'm proud just to be here and objectively think it's cool that even one actual Destructoider (I hope I can call myself this) is in the finals otherwise filled with people who didn't give a damn about this site before, are talking crap about it everywhere else, and won't be here when it's over...

In retrospect I too think they should spend their time and money on other kinds of competition, but only because the current target audience isn't worth it. Complaining about a competition not being run the same way dedicated and experienced Quake tournaments are because there's prizes on the line, but being OK with raffles? Give me a break. This is just supposed to be fun and people can win stuff. Destructoid has given away expensive stuff in some pretty crazy - but FUN - competitions before... But you wouldn't know that, would you.

You sound like your entitled anything, and even robbed. That's where you're not doing a very good job here.

Meh. I know I'll lose. I'll still try though ;)
You guys are insanely talented compared to me and I can only pray to score once or twice against you.

back on topic for one second... so how is this whole cod4 thing going to play out? is it just a private 1v1 match any weapons any maps time limits? also, what happens when there are people in the semis with diff versions (ie. xbox vs pc)

Well... I was not even aware of what the destructoid community really was about, until I had run a search seeking more info with quake live developer interviews, and most amazing thing shows up, a QL tournament!

I see a few of the users are disagreeing with the outcome of the top 6, but like other tournaments it in the end is up to the people running it, and how they sort it all out, and the end formula they seem to have come up with. I can't say its always fair though, i've been banned from a local cybercafe *which recently shut down* after winning a COD4 tourney *back when it first came out*, and told to never come back, all because the other players claimed I was hacked (which was what all the people i played said i was doing, which made no sense since because its clearly a lan), and I never won the GPU and gift card they were claiming went to first place! So yeah I can understand the frustration :(

Though Torzelan is right about most of the people who joined up, I on the other hand, plan on staying in the community and getting more involved than i am now *being idle* maybe start writing a few blog post or two soon (I have some ideas), and its all because of what I have found through this tournament.

But in the end I thought it was really fun, and Torzelan and Hawtpawkithero (both being actual destructiod users to :) ) had good sportsmanship the entire 2 weeks, and everyone else, weird, dahang, and boots fellow u.s. players, were great competition to.

Just my 2 cents though.

My bad; didn't see who got in now. HawtPawkitHero has like three times as many comments as me and a truckload of blog posts :) Hope you do stick around hardboiled777 and I think/hope forn1x might too, another great guy. I might have underestimated this!
Haven't run my copy of CoD4 since... Well, can't even remember, but will do when this is over and we know rules/how it's supposed to be played :)

Hi all,

Thanks for weighing in on the comments. I've update the post and FNF web site regarding some of the discrepancies regarding the removed players from the semi-finals. It pains me to adjust the leaderboard but there was some activity discovered that invalidaded some of the wins.

As for participation in comments versus skill on the site, there really shouldn't be a correlation or consideration there. Many of our regular readers and supporters don't comment often, just as many forum-goers or IRC goers won't be in FNF, and so on. It's a big site and we're happy if anyone is using any portion of it. Adding tournaments is both another way for us to bring more people in under the Dtoid family and a way for our sponsors to reach and invite our existing community to also play. I think these two different people can co-exist and have some fun; we're trying to add as much diversity and opportunity with raffles and random give aways to make sure nobody is excluded.

Anyhow, I hope everyone's happy with the way our first tournament went. I think we learned a few things and will be tweaking the software accordingly. Until then, thanks for playing and the support!

@Gillz -- I agree with your assessment. Ultimately I think that if the system doesn't force pairings the tournament becomes free-form and other strange rules and play patterns can emerge, which unfortunately caused some players to be asked to step down from the first game.

We did anticipate some of this behavior though. We had hoped that, through scoring people via ELO, this would weed itself out. We did not however anticipate packs of friends playing and not wanting to play against each other or skilled players avoiding each other at all costs. We're designing how this will work right now. It's challenging because we want people to be able to enter the lobby and pick up a game without having to schedule it, ideally. I'd like to break away from passive game methods.

The disconnect issue you described can be resolved with the dispute system though. We had a few of these where we had to issue a warning to a certain player. If a player is caught doing disconnects or other cowardly tactics their score will be invalidated.
