I know some people really enjoy the novelty iPhone apps, and I happen to not be one of them. However, when I got a press release that had the words "iPhone" and "Japanese Horror" in it, I admit I did take notice. Developed by Appliya, Ghost Camera is an app that allows you to take a picture and then insert a bunch of different versions of a Sadako-type ghost into them. HAUNTED PHOTOS!

Ghost Camera Lite is avaliable to download for free if you want to try out the app (it's limited to only 2 types of ghosts). I might love some J-horror, but I can't help but think this is kind of silly. Then again, if someone released an app where you could insert Totoro into the backgrounds of all your pictures I might buy that, so I have no room to criticize.

There's a free version of this App as well so you can try ghost photography for free!

In Japan, they have something similar to this in a form of a celphone game tied to the Fatal Frame/Project Zero franchise.

@ender_x -- Why hate iPhone owners? We didn't make the app ;)

@Redzie - Now that Fatal Frame thing I would actually check out!

this is a little underwhelming isn't it? I don't have an iphone myself, but if I did..... I wouldn't be spending my hard earned linden dollars on this thing....

I thought the same thing as Redzie. You supposedly use the phone as Camera Obscura and take pictures of ghosts floating around your house.

I'm moving to Japan to get some of this stuff, I swear.

Yech - this sort of thing isn't going to go away is it?

In Australia, companies are advertising a mobile phone screen saver which is basically just a moving image of a hand x-ray. It says "turn your mobile phone into an X-ray machine" and invites you to move your phone over a friend's hand, while the x-ray footage is playing on the phone's screen to "amaze" them.

This is the same sort of thing - the only people who would be fooled by this are the EXTREMELY gullible, or people with absolutely no technological knowledge. Trying to find someone in Japan who doesn't know anything about phones is next to impossible. The only people this "app" is fooling are the elderly or dementia sufferers. And that's not cool.
