Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Do not adjust your set, you really did read that Cooper Lawrence, the psychologist who appeared in Fox's unfair and unfounded slander against Mass Effect, has admitted that she "misspoke" about the game and has actually done the right thing in retracting her comments. Having now actually done what she should have done and watched the sex scenes in question, Lawrence has realized that the game was not the foul and degrading porno she told everyone it was:

I recognize that I misspoke. I really regret saying that, and now that I’ve seen the game and seen the sex scenes it’s kind of a joke.

Before the show I had asked somebody about what they had heard, and they had said it’s like pornography. But it’s not like pornography. I’ve seen episodes of Lost that are more sexually explicit.

This is actually incredibly pleasing news, to see someone who has enough of a spine to admit something like that, especially when it comes to videogames. While it does little to justify her going on air and defending a viewpoint she had no right claiming to hold, and doesn't make up for the disrespect she showed Geoff Keighley and the games industry, it is at least a respectable move and a sign that not everyone on "the other side of the fence" has to remain ignorant and offensive in the face of the truth.

I would like to think that Ms. Lawrence remembers this the next time Fox News hands her an axe and tells her to get hacking, but I'm not so sure. Another thing that isn't quite clear is just how much this is linked to the online backlash Lawrence received for her comments, but I have to think that may have at least spurred her to look into the game some more rather than just cash the check from Fox and forget about it (and some people said it wouldn't achieve anything). Either way, what Lawrence did was a mistake that no professional should have made, but admitting the fault has raised my estimation of her quite a bit. Now let's hope Fox has the stones to admit its errors. We're all waiting for some of this "fair and balanced" integrity.

[Thanks, Sharpless]

Despite her lies, at least she has stood up and apologised for it. Most people in media would never do that and I respect her for that. I doubt FOX news will apologise until they get enough of a response, so keep spamming them (good work so far 4chan!)!

Well good for her, although she'll need to do a lot more to get any professional respect back. Now if only Fox news would also air an apology.

As an aside though: “But it’s not like pornography. I’ve seen episodes of ‘Lost’ that are more sexually explicit.”

Clearly I need to start watching Lost again. I don't remember anything like that in the first two seasons.

Doesn't change the fact that she went on TV to speak shit about something she doesn't know about -- only makes it obvious that she wasn't worried about the veracity of the second-hand opinion she got.

But that she decided to admit it is good news I guess.

Here's to hope other "specialists" will take note and not talk shit out of their asses about games in the future.

Its good to see that some people admit their mistakes, there are a ton of people that don't admit when they are wrong no matter what the circumstances. Now that she retracted the statements, lets hope that she LEARNS something from this. Namely do some fucking research before you go on a NEWS network and do a report on something.

Wow, good on ya, Cooper.

Doesn't change the fact that she spoke badly about a subject she knew nothing about, and rudely laughed at poor Geoff Keigly, but oh well. At least she realized the err of her actions.

Oh, and fuck Fox News and their "informing" of their guests. Like pornography, indeed...

man, whatever. "spine"? she got a nyt interview about it, amazon removed the negative reviews, and it'd be a stretch to think this lady cares about video games. these cable news circle jerks just use photogenic mouthpieces to fake-discuss something in round tables. it's like those ex police officers and shitty doctors who make extra cash as 'expert witnesses' only you don't need near the qualifications to go on fox and just bash shit that fox research stimulates the most negative reactions in its viewers. and the claim that 'gamers showed her' is far-fetched. think of the publicity this z level self help author got from this. and all she had to do was say sorry about something she wasn't actually, sincerely morally invested in anyhow.
the amazon reviews were brilliant and humorous though. they had a good zippery satire. but, yeah.

While this is great news for gamers. I wish that NYT could have been mailed to all the millions gullible parents that watch Faux but never read NYT.

It would seem the damage is done on both ends now as i'm sure some sexophob parents won't be buying games for their children (properly age rated or not) and Cooper's book is selling like a bronzed turd.

Now if only Thompson's 1 star book would put a muzzle on him.

It'll happen again. They have a warehouse full of psychologists with the same opinion as hers. It's in Oneida, NY, and the guy that carries the key is six-foot-eight and carries a vicious Doberman Pinscher in his back pocket.

The only thing that will reverse the trend is if she renounces her bigotry on air during a prime viewing hour.

it is good news, but nothing will change. the fact still exists that this will not come out to the public. fox will not air any "correction" saying they misspoke the sexual content of Mass Effect. I'm taking the pessimist highway on this one.

People on the other side of the fence will not hear this, and the common social contempt against the term "videogames" will continue to be fed to keep the rest of the population in fear but still continue to watch Lost, CSI and their associated commercials. This goes deeper than we think.

And the scariest part is, I don't even think they know what the hell they're doing to the world. It's all subconscious, and thats whats so scary, and thats why the system will never change.

Also, check her Amazon page again. True, all the tags are still there, but now instead of over 400 reviews there are only 40 some. (her average score is still 1.5 stars, but still. I wonder if the gamers retracted this or if Amazon had something to do with it).

I'm very glad that she apologized to us in particular, as she has seen our almighty wrath, but I think Fox has done the majority of the damage.

I'm glad that people like Sessler exist, but unfortunately, since his show is marketed to a specific demographic, his words don't really reach out to more than just the people who agree with him.

Fairplay to her apology, its okay to take a slice of humble pie sometimes, professional or not. She's only hurt her credibility with her mistake most, but it makes you wonder, how many other so called professionals will compromise their expertise and place a dog collar around their neck, to get on the Sly Fox News?

To tell you the truth, I've seen this same kind of journalism from Sky News, their u.k/eu wing, about games before and no long trust their news to be fair and accurate.

This sort of stuff will keep happening until they all die off, I would get used to it. I just hope that your First Amendment can hold off the more radical laws until all the fearmongers leave positions of power and gaming is accepted as a normal entertainment medium, just like TV, movies, and music.

This is great and all, but if only she had thought to do the damn research on the game herself before going on the fucking show, rather than simply listening to and believing some retard jackass say that it's "pornography," it never would have come to this in the first place.

Or, rather, Faux Noise would have simply found a different patsy instead of her, and we'd still be in this same situation.

Well, anyway, that's one down, at least. Two, if you count Kevin McCullough's apology. Only eleventy billion or so to go, about half of which is Jack Thompson.

While I still don't agree with the means that came to this end, I'm glad we did come to this end, such as it is, and I'm really glad I seem to have, at least thus far, just been overly paranoid about this leading to something bad.

Also, as long as it doesn't turn into another ambush and mockery like the Geoff Keighley thing, I do hope they get an EA spokesman on FOX to clear this shit up once and for all. At least, the Mass Effect shit anyway. I mean, it's not this isn't all going to happen again the next time a game comes out with 10 seconds of semi-nudity in it, just wait and see. Ah, there I go being all cynical again.

kevin mccullough's "apology" was perhaps even more retarded than the actual article. but it was an apology, and he heard the gaming community. so some good comes out of this.

but still, the people who read that that are not in the gaming community will not read the apology, and thus the general contempt is still being fed and will continue to do so until at least two generations are entirely dead.

To those of you wishing to be cynical about this:

Regardless of her motives for the retraction, and regardless of how many people actually realize a retraction was made -- this is a step. Considering how nobody has ever truly admitted they was wrong about a game before, this is absolutely huge in context. Okay, it's not going to change the world, but come on, let's be realistic here -- Rome wasn't built in a day and it's going to take a long time before games stop being the victims of pundits and hacks.

Nobody's saying this is a definitive victory for all of gamekind, but it IS a victory, however small, and one that should be seen as a positive step forward in a world that only seems to moving backwards. Let's stop being so jaded that we can't see the good in this.
Im OK's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/26/2008 16:39

@Jim Sterling

I see good in this. A little. I just don't see enough good in this to be throwing a huge party and getting all sentimental and misty-eyed about it.

We didn't "win" much of anything at all here, and what we did "win" is still buried under the several metric shit-tons of, well... shit, that spawned this whole mess in the first place, i.e. the original FOX News broadcast and the prevailing mindset behind which it was produced. All we "won" was a semi-authentic apology out of someone who wants to be able to sell a book and who simply shouldn't have opened their damn mouth about something they obviously didn't understand to begin with, and this apology was gained through the use of dirtball tactics to strong-arm it out of them. That's what we "won."

So, please excuse me if I don't feel like breaking open a bottle of champagne over this.
