It wouldn't be a videogame controversy without FOX News trying to have a ham-fisted, awkward and ill-informed debate about it. Modern Warfare 2 has generated all sorts of intelligent and interesting discussion about its infamous "No Russian" level, and FOX does not contribute to that discussion with this embarrassing mess of a segment. Check out the video.

The guy they brought in to defend the game loses his train and thought and seems totally unprepared for even the laziest and most predictable arguments, the guy they got to attack the game actually does a better job of making Modern Warfare 2 look good, and the host desperately tries to spark off a Mass Effect style wave of panic and fails miserably because he clearly knows nothing of the game and doesn't know what's so bad about it outside of "THE TERRORISM!"

Seriously FOX, you're slipping. Even by your standards, this was pathetic.

I hate the argument that even though the game is rated M and can't be purchased by minors (in theory) they could still get at it once it's in the house. Isn't that true for any media? There are certain movies, books, television shows, and video games I wouldn't allow a young child access to. That being said, I think I'd rather let a 10-year-old play Modern Warfare 2 than allow them to watch Hostel or read The 120 Days of Sodom.

To be honest, "No Russian" although a fucktonne of fun to play through, over and over, and over, was by no means the most disturbing part of this game.

SPOILERS (lightly obscured)

The whole part with the General fucking over you and Ghost really left me gobsmacked. like fucking WOW. Especially after struggling through the mission, getting dragged to the extraction and then THAT! - I was literally just thinking, "wow, Ghost is a fucking ledge, I'd love a facemask like his, i think Ghost is my favourite character" then bam! Nooooooooooooooooooooo! Then you FUCKING BURN ALIVE!

Also when you come out of the bunker to find Russians shooting at you from the Whitehouse, and the fucking nuke/EMP jobby - just WOW!

When Soap drops you in Rio! When you're running through Rio trying to escape, when you find what's-his-name in the Gulag, even the in-the-bunker part before the white house, or finding the body in the panic room, simply the Russians paradropping into US suburbia, or moving the injured dude from business to business - sure they're not as controversial as "No Russian" but they're a million times more emotional. A million times.

Literally I'd forgotten all about "No Russian" as i fought through a blacked out DC, or ran out of mags in the downed chopper, or fired javelins from the whitehouse.

no Russian was like "hahahaha this is a nice change and fun to blast these sheeple" Whereas a massive amount of the rest of the game was like "OHHHH MY FUCKING GOD! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

The question when you boot it up shouldn't be "will you be offended" it should be "will you be devastated when a character you've developed a love and respect for is burning in front of you"

I just advised a colleague NOT TO buy this game for her 11 year old son. But it had nothing to do with no Russian.

This is a silly story, but I'm totally grateful for Fox news. I was a journalist before my current gig and it's important to have a non-Obama worship network exist, even if they are sensational and I can hardly watch them. Some important truths get voiced there that would be immediately silenced by the current administration everywhere else.

And where did they grab the pro-MW2 guy? He looks like a college student who woke up at 8am for an 8:15 class and just realized he didn't prepare for his class presentation...and sounds like it. Couldn't they have booked someone with the ability to properly defend video games?

Fox news goes out of it's way to constantly obscure the truth and leave out facts in order to generate ratings from the ignorant public. It's not just games, though, I have a step-grandfather who hangs on to every word of Fox, despite the fact that most of these things that are being left out could be totally game-changing on the facts.
People who hang on every word of any news station in general are as pathetic as the conspiracy theorists and propaganda spewers, though. It's better to get edumacated than to listen to some asshole who is paid to spout facts sent to him.

I have to give them credit for finding an Anti-MW2 spokesman that didn't even mention the possiblity that the responsibility for any ill effects falling on the game industry side. He clearly lays the responsibility on parents (where it SHOULD be placed).

Now his continual refernce to the "proven" link between video game violence and atual RL violence is typical Fox News lameness.... It seems the media these days (not just Fox News) seems to TRY and find the most controversal "expert" they can and give them a bully pulpit to spew their BS laden bile at the "issue" the media wants stired into a frenzy. They are then completely blameless for giving air time to a moronic point of view and they can claim "journalism" by simply having 2 opposing "viewpoints" debate the issue.

I'm still trying to figure out when the "facts" became the last thing any media outlet wants to present to the public.

This piece started talking about being able to play as a terrorist and quickly boiled down to 'Protect our Kids'. WTF?! That's what happens when you have 'real people' in these arguments who aren't used to face time on TV.

I fail to see the point anyone was making in this video. Fox News is poison for the brain. It's falling on deaf ears here (since people here know better) but when is there going to be at least a minimal level of accountability in reporting? Otherwise.. this was just another piece of marketing for the game.. ohh wait. ;\

As for the guy from 'Slash' gamer. What an awful name for a periodical. Just saying that name before his introduction automatically discredited anything he was going to say about violence because he's already 'biased' due to his websites name. Never mind the fact he couldn't talk one iota.

They should have gone on the street to street to poll randoms. That would have at least been comical.

They're not even asking the right question.

Is the game too violent? For kids? Sure. But it's an M rated game, kids can't buy it. You mean for adults, the people the game is intended for? We should hope adults know the difference.

Maybe we should start separating adults into two groups so the idiotic ones cannot buy M rated games either.

Really though, the no Russian level was disturbing. But you have several choices up to that point, I mean you get to choose whether or not you play it to begin with and then once you choose to play it you can choose not to kill any civilians whatsoever. Any murdering is your choice alone.

The rest of the game was a much bigger mindfuck. It really struck a chord with me when I was in suburbia USA fighting a war and I thought for a second about the ridiculousness of hearing "paratroopers dropping down near the burger joint, regroup at restaurant" and then i realized that this is exactly the same situation real soldiers find themselves in overseas, we're just not used to war taking place on familiar soil. It's disheartening and disturbing thinking that "yeah, i guess this is what it would be like if the tables were turned."

Frustrating to see our spokesperson unable to deal with the pressure. I know he meant well, and I'm sure he had some good points he had planned on making. I also agree that the guy on the right seems to love the game. How many times did he mention how well made it was?

Also, I cannot believe some of you commenters felt the need to bring Obama into this. We're going to have to amend Godwin's law for things like that.
