Fox News says that videogames sell well and then addict you photo

So this week the Entertainment Merchants Association released statistics on how the gaming industry was doing. Turns out the industry is doing pretty good year-to-year despite the current slump in console sales. Still the analyst say that the blockbuster games coming out later in the year will most likely bump up... oh wait, this is a story about videogames from Fox. Screw the facts, let's talk about how videogames are evil!

Seemingly out of nowhere (unless you read the headline, which foreshadowed the dramatic right turn the article takes) the story veers into an article about how psychologists are worried about game addiction, going as far as to mention the South Korean man who died while playing videogames in 2005. Why so far back? Because they probably didn't know about this guy in China, or they wanted to whip out that Korean addiction statistic about 2.9 percent of the male population being addicted to gaming. So somehow a story which appears to have been instigated by the release of sales numbers becomes about people getting addicted to and dying from gaming?

I realize that gaming addiction can be a real and serious problem that causes some very serious issues, but what is the point of bringing it up simply because you're discussing videogames in general? There was absolutley no impetus for this article, and if they were going to do a piece on gaming addiction a full fledged article on it would have been far more appropriate. If you're still not convinced, check out the sub-header which seems to say that the gaming industry is "peddling" its games to children like drugs.

One can always count on Fox news to provide unbiased reports.
I love Fox news, especially around the time of elections, but this is ridiculous.

The problem is not video-game addiction, the problem is that any form of liberal entertainment must be stopped!

One can always count of Fox for some good lawls.

As video games continue to take audiences away from television these attacks will only continue.

I think there on to something here... *leaves computer at 9pm, goes down stairs to basement, plays COD4 until 8am, realizes he should have been at work an hour ago. Calls up work, tells them hes not comming in, plays more COD4 until 5pm. Realizes he pissed on the floor and his mid section is emaciated. Doesn't mind the smell, continues to play COD4 until 9pm. Goes on Destructiod for 10 mins. Repeat.*

"videogame addiction" is a stupid term that is insulting to anyone that's actually addicted to something serious and life-threatening like drugs.

This story was just posted for mockery and hits anyway. FOX News isn't even worth mentioning on any blog that flaunts itself of having any integrity.

Stupidest shit I've ever heard. If a kid is getting addicted to videogames, I think the parents should be able to do something like uh...parenting.

If you bothered to read the cited article, the piece comes from Livescience, not Fox News, and is carried by quite a few news aggregators, including: Yahoo News, Livescience (of course), digg, facebook, newstin, sodahead, overclock.net, care2.com (a liberal website), in.com, allword-news.co.uk, pakgamers.com, propeller.com, blogowogo.com, inform.com, gamersvault.net, silobreaker.com, newsarama.com and quite a few other sites. The funny thing is that they all mention Livescience as the proper source of the original piece (just like Fox News prominently shows that the credited authors and site).

Why don't you be honest and cite the original article instead of trying to spin this as something Fox News put out themselves? It's disingenuous and shows you for what you are.

I agree with the first part of your comment. Calling this an addiction is an overstatement. I don't see how anyone can develop a physical or even psychological dependency on a game.
Then again, I've neither studied the field, nor do I plan to.

But I disagree that stories such as these should not be posted. We, as gamers, must defend our hobby so that it is no longer referred to as dangerous, meaningless, or childish.

Probably about the same amount of addiction as anything else. I mean realistically the percentage is of people who are likely to be addicted to something rather than the object or activity being addictive.

Some people for instance are compulsive or any number of other mental defects. Does that mean the object that they are compulsive to buy or have is evil?

@Archer I don't know if your a newborn or are retarded. News sites report news. None of the original material is rarely generated by them. It's the way it's reported. Just like Dtoid reporting this doesn't make FoxNews somehow legit and neither does anything else that is massively reported. I mean there probably a thousand websites spouting god as their source do we take that seriously too?

He's talking about the way it's twisted. The spin as they say in the News industry.

I don't think people can become addicted to video games. I think that the people who appear to be "addicted" just have nothing else to do. I know that sounds like I'm making some bad joke or something, but I'm being 100% serious. The times in my life that I felt like I was playing way too many games were all times when I had absolutely nothing else going on. As soon as I did have something else going on, I stopped playing games so much.

Addictions don't work that way. You can't get somebody off crack by getting them a girlfriend, or a job, or a goal for them to work towards. That's what seperates people who play games too much from people with addictions.

@Volomon, no I'm not either. The article that so happens to be on Fox News' website and many others is word for word the exact text from LiveScience.com, the source of the article. There is no spin whatsoever, just as there is generally no spin on ANY of the websites that have posted the article from LiveScience. I'm not sure why you would want to call me names, as I'm just calling into question the rationale behind bashing a news outlet that simply regurgitated the article as many other news outlets did, without spin. As they say, they report, you decide. Fox News did not say that they agreed with the article in the slightest, nor do I. If you took a class in journalism you might understand that properly divulging information is key, and apparently Mathew Razak would rather skew the news than report it by saying that Fox News came up with the story instead of saying that the story came from LiveScience. If he wanted to add his own spin he could have just put it on his blog.

lmao, the "sub header" Mathew refers to is simply the first part of the article, EXACTLY as it appears on LiveScience.com (and every other website that posted the article). Maybe the front page tab on Destructoid.com should say "Editorials" instead of "Stories"

THIS IS INDISPUTIBLE FACT.

Me.

On a more serious note, this is not really anything we should break our heads over. Unless it's clearly bashing videogames in order to be sensationalist and getting more hits from gamers because of that.

Also, I just like videogames. I like to play them, since it gives me something to do. They are fun to me, and that's why I keep playing them and keeping an eye out for new releases.

So, what were talking about?

.... wait, has Fox News never heard of Movies?

"When that game is completed, gamers look to a new game, often without replaying the old ones."

Like a movie. I've bought tonnes of DVDs I've only watched once.
or even Books and CD's.

I just guess Fox News or however wrote this don't understand there is a difference between crack and videogames. Therefore they won't have the same warning signs of addiction. If the child steals and turns up with a new game then they'll be punished. Crack just disappears into your body. and what kid at a certain age doesn't lie to their parents or get out of chores? shit most of us still do it!

What you have to remember is that, other than the IGN network, Fox has no major assets in videogames, thus every second spent playing videogames rather than watching their Fox, FX, NatGeo or Sky channels or their 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight or Fox 2000 movies, reading their HarperCollins books or their massive number of newspapers, or even using Myspace, Hulu, Rottentomatoes, Askmen.com, or any of their multitude of sports or news sites doesn't make their parent company any money.

dude, you keep using this word "article" and tying journalistic expectations to it; you should not be doing that. FOX is no more journalistic as I am this little wravel of toilet paper sitting next to me that I'm going to jerk off on in the next half hour.

The fact that Fox regurgitated an article doesn't make it any less stupid and doesn't make them any less responsible for slandering games. They report what they want to, and if you're an idiot you decide to believe them, because to my experience if you watch Fox news that's all you watch. At least that was the case with my math teacher in the tenth grade who I would argue with ENDLESSLY....

Addicting? Ya wanna know what is dangerous and addicting? RELIGION, how many people have been maimed, killed, tortured, and bombed in the name of religion throughout history..MILLIONS! If they want to ban something addicting and dangerous they should start with religion, yet those same idiots that holler about anything else any one does themselves are the REAL addicts. They figure if someone is getting enjoyment out of anything except the hymnbook it MUST be a SIN and therefore eliminated. Who are the real addicts, the real danger to the world, people who sit and play games or the morons who want to wage wars with anyone who is, or believes, different than they? Faux News is just a mouthpiece for the conservative religious right wing self righteous windbags who themselves are addicted to hate, narrow "mindlessness" and intolerance.
PS: I don't play video games, never have, and have no desire to do so, but I'll defend YOUR right to play them to the best of my ability!

I found it along with a decent mix of positive and negative articles about video games by searching "video games" in the www.foxnews.com search bar.

This one has a video. It just isn't quite as sexy to write about as it would be if "CBS" was replaced by "FOX"

You wanna know what word you're supposed to use? AddictIVE. Not addictING.
Someone can be addicting someone else to something but an object is always addictIVE. I see so many people get this wrong, do they teach it wrong in American schools or something? It's like saying "that videogame was so dissapointed. I am upsetting now." Not the right words!

Rant over.

Grammar aside, the word you should be using to describe a good video game is 'compelling'. As in, the game is so compelling, I can't put it down. Addictive carries connotations that are not helpful for the video game industry.

P.s. I wasn't aware of the difference between Addictive and Addicting.

Heres a theory of mine the reson they hate videogames so much is because of the fact it draws poeple away from their channel resulting in getting less money maybe thats why they hate games so much.....
