I’ve found that, in the usual glut of high-profile releases this fall, many people seem to completely have forgotten that there’s still one more potential game of the year contender waiting in the wings: Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia. The gorgeous-looking current-gen “refresh” of the storied platforming franchise is due for release on the PS3, 360, and PC this Tuesday, December 2nd (you’d think that, by now, the video would give a more concrete release date than “Holiday 2008”). Being a huge fan of the first and third last-gen titles (The Sands of Time and The Two Thrones), I’ve got high hopes for this game.

Above, you can watch the game’s fourth developer diary from Ubisoft. It’s just under five minutes long, and it provides some background on the game’s design (open-world, but not sandbox) and story. I really like the fact that there will be all kinds of different ways to complete the game, and what you see will change depending on your decisions. The “network” of the game world also sounds like it ties in with the story experience, allowing players to get to the same story points through varying paths.

So why aren’t more people talking about this game? I don’t know what the answer to that question is, but I do know that I’m trying to drum up as much excitement for Prince of Persia as I can. Be sure to check out the Destructoid review from Nick; it’ll be up on Tuesday to help you decide whether or not you should pick the game up this holiday season.

Prince of Persia's art style is really amazing. I seriously think this and Valkyria Chronicles (don't know if I spelled that right) are bright spots in the current trend of hyper realism when it comes to the watercolor painting sort of artwork. I hope this game is amazing because I may just buy it so I can stare at it.

You are my hero! The aspect ratio for the video is correct!

Anyway, this has been my most anticipated game this year. The art is amazing and the platforming gameplay was near-perfect last generation and the added twists seem like they'll only add to the game.

I like the take on combat, since 1-on-1 duels were the sole form combat in the first game. I hope the combat is improved enough to be interesting on its own, as I thought that was the major drawback of the last generation's trilogy. At the best of times (like in Sands of Time) it was merely a breather from the awesome platforming. At the worst of times, (Warrior Within and some of Two Thrones, though the latter alleviated it with the speed kill system) combat was a massive annoyance that only served to prevent you from getting back to the platforming.

I am a little worried about the story, though. Jordan Mechner personally wrote Sands of Time's fantastic story and his absence was sorely missed in the other two. He isn't on board for this new one, either, as he's busy with the movie and a new Karateka game. I hope whoever is writing the story and dialogue for this one did not work on Warrior Within. Even Two Thrones did not have very good dialogue, though at least it wasn't as cringe-worthy as Warrior Within.

Wow! I can't wait to see how many activations it gets or how much SecuROM will screw up my PC. (This is Ubi we're talking about.)

Actually, the game does look pretty fantastic, but I'll wait until some of the reviews come out (I'll ignore Gamespot's, of course) before I decide on whether or not to buy it.

5 bucks says the big twist in the game is that saving the world is killing the princess cause really that's all AI partners are there for. Getting attached to them so the developer can kill them off.

I have been wondering, is it challenging if you cannot die in the game?

@DeathStrikesBack: Yes! You spelled Valkyria Chronicles correctly. Nicely done!

@bVork: Yeah, seeing distorted video really irks me, so I made sure to downsize and letterbox this video in QuickTime Pro (1248x702 --> 640x480). Unfortunately, I don't know of any program that can do the same thing for WMV files, so unless publishers provide trailers in .mp4, .mov, or something that QuickTime can open (which is something they often don't do), we have no recourse but to stretch the 16:9 video to fill a 4:3 "box", sadly.

I know I can't wait for this game. Probably the only other 'new' game I'll be getting this holiday season.

I am amazed that I havent seen any commercials for this game considering how many other high profile PoP games there are. I preordered this and I am looking forward to the extra stuff that comes with it. =)

Samit, I am plenty hyped about this game, and have followed each trailer as they released them, because I really want to see how this game turns out. In fact, there's a blog a brewin in my head about deciphering whether it'll meet the expectations about what I think it'll be like.

And Heretic, if the real challenge of the game is gone, then this game will be worthless, but I think that if it's done right, it won't matter whether you see a game over screen or not. We'll see though.

Y'know what the only thing that really worries me about this game? The fact they're doing all these developer promos. Coz' we all remember how the _last_ game they promoted like this turned out =/

The "Elika saving you" doesn't eat into the game's challenge or enjoyment; think of her as a built-in checkpoint system. Instead of the Prince falling into a pit, the game showing you a "game over" screen, and then having to sit through a loading screen, she lifts you back to your last "checkpoint."

....OK. I'm not saying anything else. Tuesday!

Yay Prince of Persia! this - and only this - will tear me away from Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, and Fable II (yes, i know, i'm behind).
