I’ve found that, in the usual glut of high-profile releases this fall, many people seem to completely have forgotten that there’s still one more potential game of the year contender waiting in the wings: Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia. The gorgeous-looking current-gen “refresh” of the storied platforming franchise is due for release on the PS3, 360, and PC this Tuesday, December 2nd (you’d think that, by now, the video would give a more concrete release date than “Holiday 2008”). Being a huge fan of the first and third last-gen titles (The Sands of Time and The Two Thrones), I’ve got high hopes for this game.
Above, you can watch the game’s fourth developer diary from Ubisoft. It’s just under five minutes long, and it provides some background on the game’s design (open-world, but not sandbox) and story. I really like the fact that there will be all kinds of different ways to complete the game, and what you see will change depending on your decisions. The “network” of the game world also sounds like it ties in with the story experience, allowing players to get to the same story points through varying paths.
So why aren’t more people talking about this game? I don’t know what the answer to that question is, but I do know that I’m trying to drum up as much excitement for Prince of Persia as I can. Be sure to check out the Destructoid review from Nick; it’ll be up on Tuesday to help you decide whether or not you should pick the game up this holiday season.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?

Anyway, this has been my most anticipated game this year. The art is amazing and the platforming gameplay was near-perfect last generation and the added twists seem like they'll only add to the game.
I like the take on combat, since 1-on-1 duels were the sole form combat in the first game. I hope the combat is improved enough to be interesting on its own, as I thought that was the major drawback of the last generation's trilogy. At the best of times (like in Sands of Time) it was merely a breather from the awesome platforming. At the worst of times, (Warrior Within and some of Two Thrones, though the latter alleviated it with the speed kill system) combat was a massive annoyance that only served to prevent you from getting back to the platforming.
I am a little worried about the story, though. Jordan Mechner personally wrote Sands of Time's fantastic story and his absence was sorely missed in the other two. He isn't on board for this new one, either, as he's busy with the movie and a new Karateka game. I hope whoever is writing the story and dialogue for this one did not work on Warrior Within. Even Two Thrones did not have very good dialogue, though at least it wasn't as cringe-worthy as Warrior Within.
Actually, the game does look pretty fantastic, but I'll wait until some of the reviews come out (I'll ignore Gamespot's, of course) before I decide on whether or not to buy it.
@bVork: Yeah, seeing distorted video really irks me, so I made sure to downsize and letterbox this video in QuickTime Pro (1248x702 --> 640x480). Unfortunately, I don't know of any program that can do the same thing for WMV files, so unless publishers provide trailers in .mp4, .mov, or something that QuickTime can open (which is something they often don't do), we have no recourse but to stretch the 16:9 video to fill a 4:3 "box", sadly.
And Heretic, if the real challenge of the game is gone, then this game will be worthless, but I think that if it's done right, it won't matter whether you see a game over screen or not. We'll see though.
....OK. I'm not saying anything else. Tuesday!
then next week, Persona 4 will tear me away from PoP.
