Nintendo announced the addition of four new titles to the Wii's Virtual Console today -- Mario Kart 64, Contra III, Bonanza Bros., and Comix Zone. See anything besides Mario Kart 64 that perks your interest? What's the VS still missing that you absolutely need?
Mario Kart 64 (Nintendo® 64, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): Put the pedal to the metal in this worthy successor to the Super NES® classic, Super Mario Kart®. Mario Kart 64 boasts great graphics, tons of unique power-ups and a stunning 3-D version of the legendary Battle Mode. With improved courses and a revolutionary head-to-head four-player mode, Mario Kart 64 is sure to win the heart of any race-driving fan. The game includes 20 different courses filled with dips, valleys, jumps, tunnels and bridges. Smooth, precise control – a trademark of all games from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto – will bring players back time and time again for freewheeling fun.
Others after the jump.
Contra III: The Alien Wars (Super NES®, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): In the year 2636, the Alien War continues, and it's up to two soldiers, Jimbo and Scully, to put a stop to the alien invasion. The aliens have ravaged the Earth with their powerful organic and technological weapons. Players can join with a partner and battle through six stages of nonstop run-and-gun action. Collect power-ups, including bombs, flamethrowers, spread shots, lasers and machine guns to take out the aliens. Control Jimbo and Scully as they travel through war-torn cities, race on air bikes, ride missiles and ultimately break into the alien base to defeat the alien boss once and for all.
Bonanza Bros. (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): Mobo and Robo Bonanza are enjoying their favorite television show when the picture crackles and the shadowy figure of a mysterious stranger appears on the screen. This figure asks them to collect certain items that he has placed inside various buildings to test his security force. If they return the items successfully, Mobo and Robo will be rewarded. The two of them state that they will get the job done in just three minutes. However, little do they know that each building is packed with security guards who will raise the alarm if they are caught red-handed. Fortunately both Mobo and Robo are equipped with bullets that can knock the guards unconscious for a few seconds. A huge reward will be given out if Mobo and Robo are apprehended. Help the infamous Bonanza Bros. infiltrate a number of different locations ranging from banks to mansions to casinos, and don't get caught.
Comix Zone (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): Sketch Turner is an artist in New York City. One day while Sketch is drawing, a huge thunderstorm strikes the city. A bolt of lightning hits Sketch's image and brings it to life. That image is Mortus, a megalomaniacal mutant who wants to become real and rule the earth. Mortus magically transports Sketch into the pages of his comic book so that he can end his creator's life and become real. Inside the comic book, Sketch meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes he is a superhero that came to save their post-apocalyptic world from the evil brought by Mortus's hand. Now that he's a comic book superhero, Sketch can really put the hurt on the bad guys. Instantly, Sketch can fight like a one-man mercenary platoon.

MAYOR-E-O KART!!
At least on XBox live, I can play with friends far away, have access to leaderboards, and have games I can't play on a modded Xbox or older system.
VC needs to start giving people more reasons to buy these old games. Once the novelty of playing a retro game wears off, people will begin to be more hesitant on paying for VC games.
You shouldn't, if it's not for you it's not for you. Anyway there other ways to play Mario Kart online which is legal I guess as long you have an original copy.
...sorry. I don't even care.
The question I asked is something that Nintendo should ask themselves.
"Why would anyone buy these?"
I'm sure there are people that buy them because;
a) They don't have another version
b) are fanboys to the point that they will buy it over and over again
c) Don't know any better
Thing is, that's not going to be enough to make the VC sucessful in the long run. Nintendo should be concering themselves with building an online platform that will make EVERYONE want to buy these games.
So far, in my opinion, Nintendo is failing in the online world.
But now, it's over. What you see is what you get. Nintendo is probably not going to update these existing games graphically or otherwise. Deal with it.
As far as Summa's question, Contra III. Come on. That was one of my favorite games as a kid. I'm definitely going to pick it up for some rad co-op action.
Give the Ninty a break! Yeah, they are now delving into the online world, and they are scared and shit, but they are not totally failing. The virtual console games are great because you DO get to see the games you loved or missed out on during your childhood, but I have to agree, the friend codes suck an ass. If nintendo swapped out friend codes and went the way of the 360, got some online games, they would be great. As it is, nintendo may be failing in the online world, but they have no games to even try to be a success in the online world.
I'm still not sold on it being a success, but that's just me.
I'm not the kind of guy that forgives Nintendo on their shortcomings.
I'm sure online is all well and good, but, meh. I've got XBL for online play. Mario Kart, I can understand why you'd want online, but I'm not a kart racing fan, so I don't miss it.
Nintendo's doing this the way they want to. If online becomes available later as some sort of add-on patch once the gaming network gets underway, why would you have any reason to complain at that point. They've just sold you a game, that's all they did. I'd think at some point, all these games you're buying (or not) would likely have built in hooks for additional features at some point if warranted. We have no idea what the backend of the games has loaded onto it. I mean, LTTP is 94 blocks (4MB). WHY? The game's like barely 1MB as a ROM dump. There's added in software on the backend, obviously.
But what do I know... I need to save my money to finish my vagina operation.
There was also this tennis game for the Turbo Grafix called World Court Tennis. It was a tennis game mixed with a Legend of Zelda style where you walked around and trained and played evil people up to defeating the the Evil Tennis King. It was my favorite TG16 game.
back to Major Nelsons blog in hope he announces SotN drops this weeks, WHO'S WITH ME!?!
Yeah, that's how many have been sold. Give it a rest already.
And yeah, I'll be picking up Mario Kart 64 for a couple of reasons.
1) It's a great game.
2) I don't have it for my N64.
Also even if I did, I would buy it again just because if Super Mario 64 is anything to go by, the N64 games look a lot sharper on the Virtual Console, plus I can play with a Wavebird meaning I don't have to have a controller cord stretched across the floor and the analog stick is tighter.
No matter how much of a Wii Fanboy you are, go and get a 360 to play by the side, for petes sake, you wont regret it.
Wii60 FTW!
what the fuck what the hell do you mean the wii only have 2 to 3 good game in the coming year
Now I totally disagree with the "we've heard it a million times, shut up." mentality. I know most of you love every possible thing Nintendo does. Some of us would like them to do a little extra for god's sake. If more people would actually complain and rally around the online for vc or updates to the games....maybe, just maybe, Nintendo would listen.
Microsoft is able to offer online, achievements, leaderboards, updated graphics. Why can't Nintendo do this, especially when they are practically charging more for the downloads.
I hope these forums don't turn into countless others where any criticism is met with blind outrage. I've seen it a hell of a lot more lately.
And for the record, I do plan on getting a 360 this year. I usually end up getting all of them eventually (like I have the 3 previous gen consoles).
So you are saying that bitching about something you cant change on a weekly basis is alright?
dude i am too lazy for that :p
Plus the argument could be reversed to "Why aren't MS and Sony doing anything to get bodies in my house?" Last time I checked, no one at a party was interested in checking out my guild, or running a map with 15 year olds. But you put on Mario Kart, or Guitar Hero, or anything where people really play together in the spare bedroom, and in 2 or 3 drinks the party moved to that room.
If the simple feeling of nostalgia can move these titles, then that's great.
I personally don't know anyone in real life that has a single VC game, much less have their Wii up and running online.
1.5 million units shipped is a success in our industry. The cost of porting a VC game is very low, so you need to sell less to be considered a success.
We can only wait and see where it stands in a year or so. Only then will we really know how it's doing. My outlook on the Wii isn't all that great, though, it's better than the PS3. I understand that my opinion might not be a popular one here, but it's mine and you hsouldn't take it too seriously.
Telling me to gtfo or stfu is absurd. This is a public forum and if you can't tolerate another's opinion, then you have some serious issues. Though, I don't like to argue about things like that, so continue if you want.
"I know most of you love every possible thing Nintendo does."
I don't think there's a single person that comments on here (at least on a regular basis) that feels like that. It's a ridiculous statement. Just because some of us like what Nintendo is doing on a particular topic (VC) doesn't mean we like everything they do.
Other have said it before, including myself, but some of us like the games exactly as they were when we were growing up. I don't want Super Mario Bros. with better graphics or online multiplayer. I actually want a replica of the exact same experience I had as a child. A lot of us no longer have these old systems and games or missed out on them altogether and would like to experience these games as they were.
The exact thing that some are complaining about Nintendo missing (updated graphics, online play, whatever other update) are the same things that some of us would complain about if they actually did.
I will buy Mario Kart 64 because it's what I remembered when I was in high school, I wouldn't buy it if that experience had changed. If you want a new or updated version of these games, that's what the sequels are for.
tolerating your opnion is one thing but it annoys the hell out of me when every single week i have to read the same thing over and over again like its gonna change anything
Ahmen coulcnt have said it better
(though i wouldnt mind online myself its not a deciding factor in my purchase)
And just for the record, I have 4 VC titles and leave it on and connected with my work and home Macs to shuffle files back and forth. It took a third party application (WiiTransfer and Chooser), but it works great.
I guess what I'm asking now is what's so wrong with adding something like a leaderboard? Would that really turn you off that much? I can understand redoing the graphics, but adding features to an already good game that doesn't detract from the gameplay isn't a bad thing.
I think a lot of you guys are thinking that making a game 'online' means changing what made the game great to begin with. The way I see it, and if I had my way, all these games would come with some form of leaderboard and the ability to play with people on your friends list. I mean, getting people into my house has never been a problem with me. We play party games all the time. It's playing games against my friends that I no longer live near that I would love to do.
My highschool friends that I used to play Mario Kart 64 with live 500 plus miles away, all I'm saying is that it would be awesome to play with them again. Again, nothing about the core game would change, it would be an option that I would choose.
I appreciate everything Nintendo is doing, I really do, I just look at it right now and think to myself, wow, there could be a lot more done. And maybe there is, maybe there's something coming up that would change my opinion and other's like me, and you know what, that would be great. In the end, I just want to buy more games, I just need more of a reason to do so than some I figure.
generaldane:
Again, it's a public forum, complaining about people complaining is just as useless, and it's not like it's going to change anything either.
Smash Bros
Mario Galaxy
Metroid 3 (maybe)
That hammer project game (not confirmed)
thats it.
While on the xbox 360 (and some for the Ps3 if you have one)
Halo 3
Lost Oddisey
Blue Dragon
Assasins creed
Bioshock
Forza 2
Resident Evil 5 (maybe)
Devil May Cry 4 (maybe)
Indiana Jones/ Jedi Dark forces (maybe)
etc. etc.
Theres no such thing as "multiconsole coming for the Wii" anymore, unless you are talking about crappy xbox,ps2 ports (such as the godfather, madden, nfs or MKA) the Wii is a different beast altogether (is not next gen) Wii is not getting Assasins creed or Bioshock like every other console. (is getting RE Wii maybe)
Dont get me wrong I dont want to get into Nintendo FUD but you just have to admit there arent too many titles for the Wii today or in the coming year, I am going to get one (when I can find one at a reasonable price) but the library is just really, really small.
since i am too lazy to do it i hope someone post other games that coming to wii
but what the hell no more heroes ftw
agreed on wii60
Anyways, skankerzero, please, PLEASE SHUT UP ABOUT NINTENDO'S ONLINE!!!!
You want online, nintendo doesnt have it, WE FUCKIN GET IT THERE IS NO ARGUEMENT HERE EXCEPT THE FACT SOME PEOPLE WANT HOUSE PARTY GAMES, SOME WANT TO BE ONLINE.
But you know what guys? In a couple of months it wont matter because the Wii will be online in a matter of months. So instead of bitching about the online service THAT HASNT EVEN FUCKING COME OUT YET why dont you just sit tight and wait for some results, and hold the scolding till then, kay???
I'm kinda glad there isn't many titles on the Wii that I will be buying, it serves as a good 'gap filler' for my 360 which isn't a bad thing in my opinion.
