Forza developer eyes Natal support for future titles photo

Surprise -- an internal Microsoft Games studio is working with Project Natal technology!

A recent job listing points to Forza Motorsport developer Turn 10 Studios looking for a biz dev manager to "drive high quality game content for our Next Generation games including NATAL platform." How could Forza and Natal work together? One of the early Natal tech demos was a retrofit of the technology for Electronic Arts' Burnout Paradise, where players used their feet to hit virtual pedals and steer with an invisible steering wheel.

Before everyone gets up in arms, keep in mind that just because a game utilizes Natal that doesn't automatically mean it won't also use a standard controller in tandem. I find it hard to believe that a studio like Turn 10, which prides itself on delivering realistic racing experiences in gaming, would ditch the ability to use something like Microsoft's first-party steering wheel.

What do you think? What applications for Natal could you see being used in a racing game?

aside from virtual fake wheel with your hands in the air, it could actually have you shifting gears yourself. It could also support some form of head tracking...

just make sure you can use the controller too, and dont make me use it for the car sticker editor

Bring on the cynic train! TOOT TOOT!

That said I can't think of any practical applications for this but then again I'm not the one getting paid to.

People who are afraid of natal aren't thinking about things rationally. For example, a racing sim using natal would most likely just use head tracking, and a shooter like Operation Flashpoint 2 could also just have head tracking. Developers aren't all morons, and some probably want to utilize this tech to supplement game pads rather than replace them.

Why do people think of stupid shit like waggle.. as if they would implement that. Some of you have no imagination.

The first thing that sprung to mind (like the poster above somewhere) was head tracking, which would make the internal car view actually worth using and actually enhance gameplay.

It might support no controller but its just retarded to think that you won't be able to use a pad or steering wheel.

For the love of all that is holy, can they not see that people don't want to be part of every single video game they play?

Whats the BEST selling racing game on the wii? Now try and sell that same game to the hardcore gamers.....

Random, barely relevant question: how do you pronounce "NATAL"?

Is it "nuh-TAL" (with the "AL" pronounced like "ALbert")?
Or is it "NAY-tuhl"?

May God smite the first person that responds with something along the lines of "you pronounce it 'piece of shit'"

I'll pass on this. Optional, fine. Required, no.

I'm not against Natal because I don't think it'll work -- I'm sure it will do (almost) everything they say it will. But I can't see playing a game without a physical controller, and physical buttons. The negatives of not having that FAR outweigh the positives.

Natal would be perfect for a racing game. Just turn away from the screen and it'll show a rear view. GENIUS!

Man people need to stop whining about this. When Natal was first announced, Turn 10 said that it would be neat to be able to explore a car's interior using natal (while not racing mind you). I'm sure any developer wouldn't use natal if it were inaccurate and buggy. Besides, not one developer has said "Screw controllers, natal is here!"

Head tracking would be nice with Natal. I haven't played Forza 3 with the multi-monitor setup yet, but I'm sure head tracking would allow people with single monitor setups to enjoy the ability of looking into a turn as they drive into it. Outside of that, I'm not sure what else could Natal offer to the racing simulation genre.

Uhh...Not flaming. But isn't the idea of Natal that it's "Gaming without the barrier of a controller"? I thought that was what Don was harping on about last E3 :S

wait until the final product comes out. I think it will be interesting to use the controller and natal at the same time.

Let's talk about how we can use natal if we are developers? I think Natal seems like a good way to play the RTS on console. I don't think it's too far fetched to use Natal's capability to select units and move maps, etc.

I see all these people shouting "head tracking!" but how the fock do you see the screen if you turn your head. Unless your living room is a hall of mirrors, it makes no sense.

The rear view mirror was a bad statement. It would be more suttle, like slightly moving your head to see around a corner. Like I already do with the right analog. But now I wouldn't have to think about it.

I could see turning your head slightly to see around the car but turning your head too much would mean taking your eyes off the road. Or do you turn your head but keep your eyes fixed towards the TV? Almost goes against the idea of actually turning your head if you're not going to actually look in that direction.

I'm still not sold on NATAL just yet and the fact that they would incorporate a controller doesn't really sound much different than what Sony is preparing with their Sphere/Gem/Arc (whatever) controller. My main concern is still the sensation of having something in my hand.

Sounds dirty but remember the love scene in Demolition Man? They did everything without physical contact. Call me old-fashioned but I like to know I'm making contact. I'm not making love to my console but I'm a touchy-feely kind of guy so pardon me as I hold onto my WiiMote of Love and Dual Shock-My-Heart controllers.

Wow, I was kind of hoping for some kind of game control revolution, but adding an expensive 3d motion tracking camera to your set up, just to turn your head a little on Forza?!?!

Shit.

So it's going to be shovelware and the tinyest applications in games then yeah?

Cooking Mama, NatalSports, NatalFit, the ability to "look" in Forza and perhaps a little face recognition in Halo, so you can smile behind your shiney helmet?

Brilliant.

Fuck that, give me a dungeon crawler with Sony's Arc thing, some swords and sheilds, bows and arrows, allow me to control it with the Arc's buttons, analogue stick AND MoCo, casting spells and shit.

It's too soon for games to go button free, and if it's just a normal game with a normal controller plus some MoCo "Looking" gimmick, I care not.

wouldn't want it for the racing, but I would appreciate minority-report-style-controls for the marcetplace, cardesign and such :-)
