Forza 3 player isn't banned for breast cancer sticker photo

We received a few tips this afternoon, pointing to a Forzamotorsport.net forum post, in which user Slim135 says he was banned for a Breast Cancer Awareness bumper sticker as part of his custom livery setup in Forza 3. The way we heard it, the sticker got him banned for having the word "breast" on it. Sounds a little ridiculous, right? Turns out it is.

We contacted Turn 10's Community Manager, Che Chou, to find out why someone would be banned for a relatively tame word like "breast." As it turns out, the bumper sticker actually said "Save the Ta-Tas" on it, which some users found offensive and subsequently reported as such. Not knowing this was an actual slogan from an actual breast cancer foundation, Turn 10 issued a ban in response to a number of inappropriate content complaints from the Forza community.

Afterward, they were pointed toward this website, which is part of a real breast cancer foundation that actually does use the slogan, "Save the Ta-Tas." With the misunderstanding cleared up, the ban was promptly lifted. If the internet mobs put down their pitchforks long enough to take notice, they'd see that all is well.

That's not to say you should go about pasting boobs all over your Nissan in Forza 3. But if you heard that Turn 10 will ban you for the text "Breast Cancer" because "breast" is a naughty, naughty word, you heard wrong.

This is why I love this site. Not only did you find this story but you take 5 minutes to ask Turn 10 their side of the story and wrote up a balanced post with all the facts.

That forum thread is an interesting read, too.

I never heard the original story, but why would ta tas be any more offensive than breasts?

I wonder if the guy has realized yet that he's not banned, or if he's having too much fun causing an uproar.

I don't think either word is offensive in the least, obviously. But Turn 10 doesn't sit around all day looking for vaguely naughty words, they only banned the guy initially because they got a ton of complaints about it.

Yeah, I don't think the words Ta Ta's even qualify as that offensive, but we had massive amounts of reporting on that piece of content, and looking at the bumper sticker image out of context of the real website, our moderator made the call that it wasn't so much in support of breast cancer as it was mocking the severity of breast cancer. Obviously, in retrospect, it's our bad so we've unbanned the user. All should be well. :)

Seriously the "Save The TaTas" campaign has been going strong for a couple of years now. What idiots ratted this guy out to M$??

I mean come the hell on.

@chespace

If the issue was that people really thought he was mocking breast cancer, then that makes a lot more sense.

My question would be, why were the people reporting it offended? Because if they modded it just to shut the mob up, and the mob was pissed off about the word alone, then their actions were still lame. Without knowing anything about it though, I could just be making a drama up in my head.

I dont udnerstand whats wrong with the words Ta Ta's, Breats, Vagina, or Anus. They are just words, not bad words at that. This is getting out of hand, completely out of hand.

Do they even give you a chance to change your name if it is something "offensive"? If not I find their practices very questionable. I would be amazed if I were to get banned for the use of the word breasts, or even ta tas

people thought that he was mocking breast cancer awareness. Thats the reason he was banned temporarily.

normal people aren't offended by words or pictures but ideas. Forza 2 had boobies all over the place. Noone got banned there as far as I can tell. and they shouldn't either.

lol imagine if we had jpeg importing. actually I would like that Turn 10.

They actually ban people for having a couple complaints for obvious morons? Good thing their game blows so I don't accidentally end up giving these cowards money.

And what exactly is the difference between a few idiots getting offended at someone randomly using a term and them getting offended at an "actual ad campaign"?

If you get offended by words you are a cunt and I hope you die. I'm sure at least one or two of those tools read Destructoid.

Eh... the usual tempest in a teacup. They get complaints, at least they react. They've investigated, reconsidered... all is well.

Kudos to Turn 10 for being responsive to their community!

We need more women in the game industry, apparently. Or people who get out enough to have seen those stickers before. >_>

It's pretty pathetic when actors/actresses can swear like sailors in PG-13 movies, yet people see the word "ta tas" and issue complaints about it. Don't mean to make a big deal out of this, just seizing the opportunity to complain about stupid people!

Turn 10's admittedly quick response doesn't change the fact that they banned the guy in the first place for a design that, real or not, wasn't offensive to anyone born after 1894. It's just another step in a sequence that's already seen people banned for using their REAL SURNAME on the service.

The censorship filter is already borderline insanity, I was told the phrase "F430 battle" was banned as a photo name. I still can't work out why.

The rules for car liveries on Forza 3 are obscene. What, if I make a livery of Porky the Pig, I'll get banned for offending muslims or something?
Bloody stupid.

Why not write an article about the uproar for the lack of custom multiplayer games in FM3? BTW, there have been other banning cases as ridiculous as this one.

I don't see how anyone, besides women, would be offended by the phrase *fuck the tatas* either. Isn't that something all men would like to do? :P Okay, it may be offensive language & sexist etc but come on, there are better things to waste your time on. Honestly.

I have a shirt I got while in college that says 'I (heart) boobs' on it. It was a shirt I got bought during Breast Cancer Awareness Month for a good cause, and I like wearing it (pretty soft shirt). The only reason I don't wear it now is because of the stares I'd get. People are too damn sensitive these days.

It was really stupid of them to have banned him so quickly before reviewing the issue.
What if it was a breast cancer survivor? That would have been terrible.
Whoever did the ban was irresponsible.

and those who flagged it are Either Idiot Sexist Women who feel that you aren't allowed to call Female Parts anything they deem offensive no matter what the cause

or Douchey guys who were Butt Hurt that they lost and wanted Revenge and saw that they could flag the Sticker because there was nothing else they could really do......well unless they wanted to whine on the Intrerwebs

Glad this got resolved

and I hope those who flagged it are on a Watch list to keep them from causing Shenanigans like this again

The creator of the livery was donating a $1 for every in-game purchase to Susan Komen foundation. What's lame is that thread in the forzamotorsport.net forums with the discussion and rant against Turn 10 for about 4 pages got locked by a mod about Sexual Reference without reading the thread there either. Classic.

Glad to see Turn 10 figure out the mistake and right it.

i was banned for a month for putting the word "blunt" in a car . is this reasonable? or are the ppl that complained just jealous about car designs? because sincerely i find bloody game images more ofensive than the word "blunt"! or is forza just for wine drinking riders?

This is absolutely ridiculous. My wife has a pair of cycling socks with the "Save the Ta-Tas" logo and slogan on them. Are the park rangers going to kick her off the trails?

Grow up people.
