Fighters...which one was the best?
Alrighty peoples,
Lets disscuss which Fighting game was the best and why. Here's my take. ![]() "I believe Street Fighter Alpha 2[released in the US 1996 for the PSone] is the best SF game made. It had the traditional sprites put in place, quick tempo, and multiple supers available to the player. It also intorduced characters that have become iconic such as Sakura and Gen(playable). I also enjoyed the music, which fit perfectly for the locals, and character's theme. The sound of punches and kicks vary from character to character, which I'm not too sure was the case in previous SF games. The ending varied from which character you choosed, unlike the traditional showdown with M. Bison/Akuma. Just to show you how great fights became, heres a list of options the player has when his super meter was filled: *Perform one of two supers using a punch or kick, spending 1/3 of the bar. *Perform one of two supers using all three punches or kicks, spending full meter. *Press HK+FP and trigger the game's custom combo, which slowly depletes your meter while you create a combo and your shadow becomes an active fighter. Which brings me to my conclusion, the game’s replay value is virtually limitless. There is always something new to learn in-game; each charater has depth in their move set and strategy that I still haven't been able to say I'm done with this game." What do you guys think is the best? |

This is very debatable...
I love, love Super Turbo. I played Street Fighter III for a few years and no other Street Fighter. SF3 was my first SF game actually, the first I got to really know. But you know? The game made me really angry. It was parries. They were ridiculous. Every match I has I would think "If I knew how to parry well, I'd have won that." Anyway, it was one day on GGPO that I saw Super Turbo and thought "What the hell." This was after a long session of getting my ass kicked in SF3. So, I played it. For four hours. I love ST. It's fast, sweet, and simple. The characters are the classics. Most of all tho, I love playing it, win or lose. When I first played it on GGPO, I think I won less then six matches out of God know's how many I played that day. It was FUN tho. So, I love Super Street Fighter II Turbo more then any other fighting game. |

My favorite is Guilty Gear XX, though I am too tired and too bad at it to offer a legitimate argument as to why.
Quick, someone who shares my opinion! Come and support my statement! |

Super smash Brothers Brawl for me. I've never had as much fun with a fighting game as I had with this one. And yes, it is a fighting game (There is no set definition other than two or more people fighting each other). I hate how other people (ignorantly) just call it a party game.

Capcom vs. SNK 2. I'm in no way a competitive fighting game player, and I always pick C-groove. I just love the "feel" of this game, the speed of play and the way all of the characters move sits right with me.

Brawl for me too. Admittedly I had more fun with Melee, but that's only because I had friends that liked that game too. Now my Melee playing friends have moved and Brawl isn't much fun single player. I can admit that it's the superior game though.

I definitely gotta be Capcom vs Snk 2 just because of the huge roster and different modes and grooves, sooo many possibilities.

I'm with you on Alpha 2, but I also got a lotta love for SF4 and Smash Brothers.

Any of the smash games will work for me, but I prefer Brawl simply because I'm better at it

I've spent more time in the Smash Bros games than I have any other fighters. Part of it is the fun nature of it, part is that a lot of my friends had them (so we could get together a bunch of people for tournies), and part of it was just that it's easy to learn the controls. Too many games in the fighting genre either take too long to learn the controls to a point where you can be competitive, or rely on the frantic mashing of buttons... and I suck at both. But I can always at least put up a good fight and have fun with Smash Bros. Of the series, though, Melee is the best. Brawl just didn't add much to the game and for some reason I got tired of it much quicker.
If it weren't for the SB games, I'd say either MK2 or SF2:SuperTurbo though. Those are both games from my childhood that I can remember almost getting into real fist fights over when playing with friends and our older siblings who always kicked our asses. Good times. |

Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
It's 15 years old and there still are regular tournaments in Japan. on a bi-weekly basis. |

I've been replaying Alpha 2 lately seeing as it popped up on the PSN Store, for a mere 5 bucks, to download and I've gotta admit...it is pretty sweet. I always thought that it was gravely inferior to Alpha 3 but I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't as I originally thought.
BUT the best fighting game in the Street Fighter series is a toss up between Street Fighter II and Third Strike. I fucking LOVE Third Strike. The animation and characters . like Dudley, are just pure win. And the parries to me added a flow and tit for tat mechanic that watching great players play mesmerizing. Street Fighter II is just awesome. So tie for me between those two. Also you need BlazBlue and a PS3 so I can kick yo ass deBloo.

3rd Strike is awesome and probably my personal favourite, but still way too unbalanced. This doesn't change much for us mortals but at high levels it's all Chun-Li vs. Yun, they're that better than everybody else. it's still an incredibly beautiful and fun game but to me the "best" fighter also has to be reasonably balanced.
also, smash bros != a fighter :P |

It's nowhere near a "legitimate" choice, but I'll always have a soft spot for Pocket Fighter/Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix - within a genre (and player base) that takes itself far too seriously far too often, I love seeing an openly silly, but still fun, release once in awhile (which also puts the Goketsuji Ichizoku/Power Instinct series close to my heart, as well as Waku Waku 7 and Astra Superstars). Other fighters may be deeper and more technical, but when I have friends over who aren't as big into games as I am, those are the titles which will tempt them into picking up the controller.
