Sometimes you just don't know how good you've got it.
tl;dr version: *fap fap* @ Podtoid
So I happened upon Podtoid largely by accident. I didn't even pay that much attention to Destructoid until some of the people at reddit went on some self-righteous rant against Jim. Well, I've listened though quite a bit of the Podtoid archive and as it came to an end I needed more sustenance. I figured I'd check out some of the other podcasts in the gamecastnetwork whose ubiquitous adds began to gnaw a hole into my brain. I haven't listened to all that there is to offer, but I listened to two of a particular podcast which will remain nameless. There's all this vitriol on the internet that Destructoid is lacking journalistic merit and instead nothing but a harbor for immaturity. Well, the nameless podcast was far worse than anything I've heard here. They actually discussed a topic that has been discussed on Podtoid and the contrast was just unbearable. They even made a crack about Jim since it seems so en vogue to do so. Not a single person but the host could even hold up a conversation. They had nothing intelligent to say and were unable to reflect on the topic except to speak ill of anyone who supports the gaming they like with monetary compensation. It was mostly the host trying to bring light to the topic from different angles while the remaining cast just yelled ridiculous things and made silly noises. Sure there's some of this joshing on Podtoid, but overall everyone can hold up their end of a conversation and add something substantive to the dialogue. A note about Jim in particular. I had some inescapable preconceptions about Jim due to his (growing) internet notoriety. In listening for a bit (and reading as well) I can see where some people are coming from. But over time I found myself being stunned by his very timely wit and edginess. He's brash, but unashamedly honest. If I want an unbiased opinion, it's people like Jim Sterling who are going to give it to me. You can either be bothered by how strident and even juvenile he can be, or look past that and realize that he's also brilliant. That's not to dismiss the rest of the regular Podtoid cast. It's just that Jim catches so much flak and I think it's highly unjustified by people who just want to be reactionary and small minded. I'm sure everyone here already appreciates Podtoid plenty, but I just thought I'd share my thoughts and hopefully you'll think more about how good this particular podcast really is. |

Intro post might be a good idea if you plan on sticking around.

I still don't get why people are so obsessed with intro posts. Marry them if you love them so much. Some people just want to post in the forums about their favorite shows. Let 'em, says I.
Anyway, I really appreciate the kind words about my work and about Podtoid as a whole. I'm very proud of what Podtoid offers, even if some other communities don't appreciate it. As far as I'm concerned, you won't get the level of debate, humor, intelligent discussion, juvenile joshing and Samit abuse on any other podcast. |

Yeah, Podtoid seems to have the absolute best balance. They are just serious enough. They take moderately pretentious views of the subject while still keeping light and fun. I think a good bit of this is due to Anthony's hosting and whatever talent it is that he possesses to toe the line between sobriety pure silly.
I don't get why there's such an acerbic response to Dtoid as a whole. It seems people just can't the tongue-in-cheek way Dtoid can deliver news without really making itself out as a body just for news. I think we have the best of both worlds. Of course I'm probably seeing a bit of a biased outpouring of hatred since I spend a lot of time on reddit where it seems their new hobby is to post things about Dtoid that piss them off. If you took something Jim said and put it in Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw's mouth they would think crap turned to gold as they have no qualms with Zero Punctuation's occasional dalliances with off-color humor. |

Welcome Yeargdribble!
I have to agree I can understand how some other podcasts appeal to a certain group of people but for me only two shows can satisfy my need for gaming discusion. Podtoid and the Giant Bombcast. There's a lot of hate for Dtoid out there. but I really like it here so fuck the haters. |

Giant Bomb is another of those sites that's literally build upon integrity and the fact that there is much love both directions says something about Dtoid in my opinion.
On the pure fun side is the fact that Podtoid has such a lore around it. The in-jokes aren't out of reach and are great fun. I love all of the personalities... even Samit. Admittedly, Samit and I share the inability to be succinct as you may have noticed. I also love the pacing that Dtoid has. I like to check things very often and the staff here is turning stuff over at breakneck speed. If I go more than 8 hours without checking the site I'll sometimes find myself having to go as far as page 3 to get caught up. |

I agree whole heartedly. Listening to a lot of podcasts there was always a couple that I will listen to forever.
For movies the /film cast is the place to go too for a nice balance of film geekery and pretentiousness deconstructing. But went it comes to games Podtoid has become my number one source. It used to be the 1up podcast back when Jon Davidson and Garnett Lee were still apart of the cast. It was usually over two hours long which was nice and filled to the brim of serious talk about the gaming industry as a whole. However once they left Podtoid became number one. |

I've heard people complain about lengthy podcasts, but I personally love it. The more meat the better, especially when I'm only getting one chunk a week. I like having something to listen to when driving to work, working around the house or even gaming.

I have to agree with long podcasts, as long as they are one of the ones from Dtoid. I can go for hours listening to these and actually spent 20 minutes yesterday going through the ones I had, listening for my favorite quotes from them. ("Well seeing as it was a Wednesday..." as Marcus Fenix is probably one of my favorites. That and the whole of Episode 119)
Great fun to be had, and Podtoid is my source of comedy, game info., and insightful pieces (which are sometimes rare, but awesome). |

I agree with OP and everyone else. I love Dtoid's style and humor. I spend pretty much my entire work day in every corner of the site reading/listening to what ever I can get my hands on.
I listen to a lot of podcasts but when Podtoid comes up I stop what I am doing and listen to that. Maybe it has to do with personal taste but I think it has to do more with the great chemistry everyone has with one another. As for everyone hating on Jim. I think its pretty unfortunate that those people can't get past whatever gripe they have against him because has a lot of interesting and intelligent things to say about gaming and things in general. Dtoid would be a far more drab and uninteresting place without him. |
