Former SCEE boss claims Sony and Nintendo will claim joint victory this gen photo

Former SCEE president Chris Deering has today suggested that Sony will eventually catch up to Nintendo, leading to a joint victory this hardware generation. Meanwhile, Microsoft is supposedly fated to bring up the rear in third place. Deering predicts that the magic year for Sony shall be 2011.

The former Sony executive arrived at his conclusion by examining Screen Digest IDG data, as well as looking at the growth of the hi-def and so-called "grey gamer" markets. Also factoring game engine and Wi-Fi expansion into the mix, Deering claims that the installed hardware base will rise from 316 million to 500 million over a three year period, and that the combined weight of Sony and Nintendo will lead to a pair of "big mega-powers" leading the market.

His outlook for Microsoft is less sunny, suggesting that the Xbox 360 will enjoy a "decent" growth with an install base of 40 million by 2011. In contrast, Deering predicts 150 million DS units installed, 80 million Wiis, 70 million PS3s, 90 million PS2s and another 70 million PSPs.

What do you make of this man's forecast? Is Microsoft destined to lose out to the Sony/Nintendo superpowers, or can the Xbox 360 hold its own once the Black Box o' Blu-ray starts to truly hit its stride?

The PS3 is definitely a wonderful, affordable Blu-Ray option and that alone will ensure a widening install base. However, the Xbox 360 still seems to offer the most varied and enjoyable pure gaming experience and it looks positioned to stay that way for a while. Both consoles are worthy contenders for their own reasons, but I'll be surprised if there isn't a new Xbox by 2011 anyway.

Yeah, MS will release a new console before they allow that to happen. Though I do agree we're headed down that path.

@ HarassmentPanda - It's not really an affordable Blu-Ray option anymore, considering Blu-Ray players are now at the PS3s price point, being sold for the low $300s.

I think any company that thinks they are going to catch up with the Wii has lost it's damn mind. The ONLY way that will happen is if the mainstream completely loses interest in it.

@Mike Maloney

I'd say it's still an economically attractive option because the PS3 has a lot of added value as a gaming machine. Also, the PS3 has upgradeable firmware for future Blu-Ray specifications. I know the first and second gen Blu-Ray players didn't have this feature, do the new ones? A player without it is little more than disposable, in my opinion.

I'm with panda, a new xbox will surely be on the cards, stepping further ahead of a still defiant sony. Bluray will be superordinary and much cheaper by this date, the ps3 games will still take much longer to develop for. Basic maths says bollocks to sony. 1st party nintendo games will still be enough to keep their demographic.
Sony has half the units Nintendo and MS have with the least amount of games per hardware purchased. http://nexgenwars.com/
PS3 will still be lingering in third place with gamers still waiting for Home and GT.
Set emotion engines to cry.

I agree, the ps3 will have a long cycle and will eventually win more sales than the 360, the 360 is probably going to be replaced in three years.

Funnily enough, my exact reason for naming Trips Nintendo was due to the fact that he rarely loses.

I agree with the prediction actually- the ps3 is actually a really nice machine- and so long as the platform continues to produce at a slow growth it will definitely outpace the 360, especially since microsoft seems pretty poised to just pump out the next piece of hardware and throw away the last with little regard for it. Sony really does seem to have a vision for the ps3 and nintendo does for wii, but microsoft's vision doesn't seem to go far past it's wallet- we will see where the chips fall after this winter/next spring when the bevy of new games are released- the agency/little big planet looks really good for sony as well as resistance 2, hopefully home will come out, fable looks really good for 360 (the only game that even tempts me to get one, but I will prolly play it on PC) and you can play your wii like a flute (for what it is worth- though I am more interested in the newer wiiware)

I agree. I think the PS3 is really starting to carve out its niche. It took a while, but it is happening and I love the direction they are heading.

Also, it is by far the best option as for a bluray players. People argue that this is not true, there are some that are 100 bucks cheaper. Yes but take it from someone who bought an $800 bluray player - none of them come close to the quality and ease of use. I had to constantly upgrade the firmware, it wouldnt play divx or KVCDs, it had clouding problems and of course the fact that you get an ENTIRE GAMING SYSTEM, and Media Center are also pretty big perks.

So yeah, people are finally starting to realize what a great system it is. Plus, microsoft going on a release cycle that is half as long makes their systems even less appealing in my opinion. They have some good games, but a lot of times it seems like they tend to nickle and dime more than Nintendo and Sony - which pisses me off.

Sounds about right. microsoft doesn't have what it takes for the long haul and they aren't really in it for the video game business, they're in it to hold onto their desktop operating system monopoly and expand it into the living room.

A year from now when PS3 is level or ahead in install base watch for microsoft to already be moving toward the exit. And don't expect their hardware difficulties to disappear when they push an early launch again next time.
