To see your creation out of your hands like that - it just sucks.
@Activision's treatment of the GH franchise
Big corporate CEOs are like locusts, plain and simple. Activision isn't the first company to be ravaged by someone like Kotick, and it won't be the last.
What they basically do is go into a company, find something successful, overproduce it, suck all their resources dry until they're just a husk, and then move on. Activision was a respectable gaming company founded in the 80s! The 80s! Seeing Kotick ravage this company like this is just really grinds my gears. Once COD has been saturated, Kotick will look for another hole to stick his [Ko]dick in.
i do understand his pain, but at the end of the day, there's no reason why they couldn't have put out ONE game and updated the track list, apart from to make more cash.
if he'd had complete control he'd have done the same thing without doubt.
Though it's nothing we didn't already know. I'm still pissed at Bizzare Creations being closed. Sorry Blur didn't sell 432 million copies, Activision, but it was fucking fun!
Anyway, I haven't bought an Activision product since Prototype so doesn't make a difference to me.
Also the story reminded me of something...
...were is the info for the next GTA!!!
"Oooh shit, better trade in all my games. Theres another three Call of Duty games out this year."
They more like, skinned and whored out the cadaver of Guitar Hero. Over-saturation Activision, it's a real thing.
Also, your endcap to this story echoes the sentiments I've been screaming for over a year now. They need to be stopped, for the good of the industry.
No where to be found.
I won't argue that the franchise, like many Acti properties, was milked. But, it was a niche genre and Acti was probably looking to strike while the iron was hot -- get as much cash out of the fad while it was still a thing. They are, after all, a company who's primary goal is profit generation.
Honestly, if the property was a money maker for them they would not have dropped it plain and simple. Acti loves money too much and has too narrow of a IP library to cancel shit for the sake of being evil.
God forbid someone at the helm of a company is business savvy and profit-oriented. I almost feel sorry for Kotick at this point. Someone has to not be emotionally attached to the games and make difficult decisions that will positively affect the bottom line, even when know-it-all bloggers and angry commenters don't like it.
You go, Bobby.
I bet Activision's CEO like most CEOs will get some very meaty profit related bonuses so its in his bests intrests to milk its IPs for everything its worth. Of which many of the shareholders wont be complaining aswell.
Its just a shame that theyve seriously damaged the rythmn game genre and to a lesser extent the FPS genre aswell.
wooo-hoooo
Kotick doesn't care about talent, he just wants to suck the creativity out of you, and devour ever ounch of it for money. That's all he does
I don't know why the fuck vivendi or blizzard agreed to ''work together'' with Activision (you already make plenty of money without Activision)
Don't get me started on shareholders, bah
I would like to say you are wrong but I am reminded of the DDR craze and have to reluctantly agree with you. As well the rhythm genre of games are not games in the same way say Call of Duty is and in its own way is designed to be milked.
Having said that however I do feel Activision has a rather ruthless method of producing games that ultimately hurts gaming in general and dilutes it down to the most basic means of producing money. Yes it is a business but a business based in process of design and creation.
There is no f&*^ing way any of Activisions multi million pound selling games belong to any niche genres especially GH
However you might have a point about striking while the iron was hot as I remember reading over a year ago an article about either activision with GH or EA with RB admitting that they didnt see any long term future in the genre and they were just out to milk it as much as they could.
Either way, if someone else other than Activision had been running the show, I doubt 1) Harmonix would have stopped making GH games and 2) GH would still be the mega-franchise it used to be.
He compares the series to GTA, but the reason GTA has stuck around isn't solely due to their staggered release schedule. The various GTA games had variation in them to keep things from getting stale (new settings, new mechanics, new physics, etc). With a game like GH, all you can really do is add new tracks, which can easily be done with DLC in lieu of an entire game.
They should look at it as an opportunity to try something new and save on publishing costs.
EA doesn't want to touch the genre, with good reason (remember EA CEO Ricetello saying it's like "catching a falling knife" when asked if they were thinking of buying the studio?)
The genre is dying and Activision is being, well, Activision. You don't hit their sales targets, most likely through no fault of the developers, you get bounced out the door.
Do I think it's morally right? Absolutely not! It's sad to have to close down studios and lay off people. I know a few friends who were affected by the "cut-across-the-board" layoffs.
But from a business standpoint? Activision is a behemoth company. They are like any other company in the world. I don't see people crying fowl when there are layoff workers at a plant except for the immediate families and the community affect. Why is this any different?
Now everyone with me..it's a BUSINESS.
What do you expect? It's a
