Former EA peeps bolt to make Wii/DS studio ... now we're talking photo

This is how you make great games for the most refreshing console to date: Create a studio to make games specifically for that console. No ports, not half-assed coding, no, there has got to be straight dedication and focus to make something truly original for an original console. Luckily for us Wii owners, the guys who have started Jet Black Games understand this very well.

Formed by ex-employees of EA Canada, the company has released a statement declaring their love for all things Nintendo:

According to a statement from the Vancouver-based company, Jet Black will create games that are based on original and licensed IP.

"Both the Nintendo DS and Wii's WiFi capabilities provide an advanced medium for Jet Black to bring already popular franchises to an even broader worldwide audience,” said co-founder and CEO Roger Freddi.

Hopefully, more studios and developers will start taking this route and leave the other games to port happily between the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. We need Wii-specific games, not ports.

Holy hell. Did Summa just talk about the Wii without acting like a total dick and bashing the console for one reason or another?

Quick Summa! You still have the comments! Get to it!

Also, I agree. Original titles = better chance of it actually being a game someone would really want to play.

Ninjas playing DS's seemed cooler in my dreams, though.

I think this is a step in the right direction. I couldn't agree with your assessment any more Summa. The Wii needs original titles that are built around the control, not ports that the wii controls are pasted on.

I agree 100%. It sucks when the Wii gets ports with motion controls added. It feels tacked-on and gimicky *cough* Twilight Princess *vomit*.

I don't like the sound of "already popular franchises". Original IP >^* endless rehashes of the same old crap. Also, EA canada doesn't have a good record of much but sports games. I don't like sport games.

Still, good to see a company declaring their support of not ports.

They should just do a new Mutant League <enter sport here> for the Wii and be done with their sports games.

What is discouraging is that on the front page of their site they talk about a 360 game.

Summa has been more or less justified in his disappointment with the Wii, people. Your gasps of fanboy terror are what has fueled his troll fire.

Credit where credit is due, Summa you are now making sense.

I gave it to you the other day, on balance I think my response to your ongoing hatred towards a small modest affordable console was justified, but now you are redeeming yourself.

This is what people want from game journalists - an insight into what the game industry should be doing, not whether you like something or not, every man and his dog has an opinion on something. So what, every blog on the net has that, but you are in a position to get to the real issues in gaming, and the main issue is - Do game developers hate us or are they really that bad?

No one wants you to like the Wii, I couldn't care less if you hate everything I love, such differences make the world go round right? All we ask is that people stop blaming a perfectly good piece of hardware for the failings of lazy developers. You cannot credit the PS3 or 360 for the good games they have, that is down to the good work of talented developers, likewise with the Wii.

The Wii was/is meant to be the console of choice for the visionary, for slightly leftfield developers who think out of the box, it was meant to be a santuary for artists and designers who genuinely want to produce software with style and substance above tech specs, it hasn't quite turned out that way...yet, but this has nothing to do with the Wii. The Wii won't change generations of laziness and stagnation overnight, and expecting it to do so is a big ask, it will take time.

Please keep this up Summa, put pressure on these developers not the hardware, because truth be told, a talented design team could still make an amazing game from 16bit hardware.

I love how Summa has come out and admitted that most of his "anti-Nintendo" posts are just to get people riled up, and that he doesn't completely hate the system, yet people still jump all over the slightest inflection in his Nintendo posts no matter what he says about it. If it's bad, it's a million people saying "OMG SUMMA IS TEH HATER." If it's good, it's a million people saying "wait, you're not Summa, Summa hates Nintendo!" God.

I remember Disney making a company just to make Wii games, and EA taking the people behind Tiger Woods games and dedicating them to Wii games only. This isn't the first time this is happening.

Aside from the shock and awe here that is every Sony/Nintendo fan on this post over Summa's post I have to say I am a Nintendo Fan, but my 360 and my DS have seen A LOT more action than my Wii lately. I'm fairly confident though that this time is really just calibration so developers can get a feel for what Wii gamers want, and how to make it happen using new style controls.
