Former 3D Realms artist shows off some Duke Nukem Forever photo

With 3D Realms by all accounts down for the count, the chances of us actually ever seeing Duke Nuke Forever in a playable form are starting to look slimmer. While the fate of the project remains to be seen, the hope we've been losing for the past ten years is at an all-time low.

Fortunately, one of the artists that worked on the project, Chris Smith, has decided to share a few unreleased renders from the title on his personal blog.

“Two years, nine months,” he writes on his blog, “now it’s over. It was fun while it lasted. I worked with an extraordinary bunch of artists, designers, and programmers. You will all be missed.”

Smith is, of course, searching for a new work opportunity. Looking at the quality of these renders, we hope he (along with the other former 3D Realms folks) won’t have too much trouble.

[Thanks, Sam!]

Wait, so they were ACTUALLY working on the game? hmm. As for the renders, meh. It looks like something out of Doom 3.

Impressive stuff.

@Arch

What Sci-Fi FPS doesn't look like something out of Doom?

Duke Nukem's worked on the fringe of parody, anyway. It's really disappointing that this game never came to fruition as even though it's got years of industry jokes built around it's non-release. It really does look like they were producing something worthwhile there and it looks like it would've been a polished game.

im not a fan of duke nukem, just never got into it. but i do think this whole ordeal is hilarious. i hope it gets released still, just for the sheer unpredictability of it. if they would just release it, they'd sell a ridiculous amount of copies just because of its legendary status.

The "Mind flayer" in-game shot looks crappy, and the enemies renders look sexy. I'm confused I'm not sure I want to see this game.

Nothing earth-shatteing in these shots. I doubt the game would've ever lived up to anyones expectations. So sad we'll never find out.

My condolences to the devs/employees at 3D Realms but what did they really expect? Duke 3D was a 1-hit wonder; trying to play off of it's success will inevitably equal bankruptcy.

Kill these piece of shit. Please, I hope this is the last bit of screens we ever get for this game.

How come nobody is blaming 3D Realms? It's their own fault for letting this game go more than ten years in development, because it certainly does not take that long to create any game. Hell, not even MMOs take that long to make. They decided to take their sweet fucking time and this is what they get. I hope they learn from this mistake and don't let it happen again, wherever the employees end up getting hired. It's a shame that serious fans are never going to play this game, but it's not their fault and they deserve to be pissed right now.

In a decade, they've managed to accomplish some very mediocre screen shots and possibly the worst game trailer of all time. Yet they had no problem consistently talking about the game. Happy to see these chumps go.

Why did the developers drag the development time so long to make this game? Is it so hard to emulate the success of Duke Nukem 3D? I wish that the developers will give some interviews or tell us what they were doing the past decade.

The environments look good, and the infestation looks suitably "Aliens" based and the station looks appropriately DOOM 3, so the references and homages to inspiration seem intact... though environment appearances were never the major highlight of the game. I mostly want to see the weapons!

>>"The "Mind flayer" in-game shot looks crappy, and the enemies renders look sexy. I'm confused I'm not sure I want to see this game."

The Mind Flayer he made for Neverwinter Nights 2... not all the screens on the blog are from DNF... surely you didn't think the Fallout 2 image was from DNF? Right?

3DRealms wasn't just sitting on their asses and doing nothing for income during those years, they were producing (just not developing) games... they even produced a little known game called Max Payne, you may have heard of it... I think there was even a small independent film based on it. =P

There were probably reasons the game kept getting delayed and maybe some internal problems, it'd be really interesting to hear about those. The first Duke 3D was rather innovative for its time, maybe the team kept having ideas and not being able to implement them with current technology, then tech improves and they go back and try those ideas again, and so on back and forth?

Plus expectations were so high for the sequel that they may have had an OCD like attention to every detail and getting everything just right.

Makes me sad, I still remember reading about the game in 1997 in a PC Gamer magazine or something. Still was looking forward to it, no matter what they turned out.

Not bad but we all knew this game was not going to live up to expectations.
