With 3D Realms by all accounts down for the count, the chances of us actually ever seeing Duke Nuke Forever in a playable form are starting to look slimmer. While the fate of the project remains to be seen, the hope we've been losing for the past ten years is at an all-time low.
Fortunately, one of the artists that worked on the project, Chris Smith, has decided to share a few unreleased renders from the title on his personal blog.
“Two years, nine months,” he writes on his blog, “now it’s over. It was fun while it lasted. I worked with an extraordinary bunch of artists, designers, and programmers. You will all be missed.”
Smith is, of course, searching for a new work opportunity. Looking at the quality of these renders, we hope he (along with the other former 3D Realms folks) won’t have too much trouble.
[Thanks, Sam!]

What Sci-Fi FPS doesn't look like something out of Doom?
Duke Nukem's worked on the fringe of parody, anyway. It's really disappointing that this game never came to fruition as even though it's got years of industry jokes built around it's non-release. It really does look like they were producing something worthwhile there and it looks like it would've been a polished game.
Kill these piece of shit. Please, I hope this is the last bit of screens we ever get for this game.
>>"The "Mind flayer" in-game shot looks crappy, and the enemies renders look sexy. I'm confused I'm not sure I want to see this game."
The Mind Flayer he made for Neverwinter Nights 2... not all the screens on the blog are from DNF... surely you didn't think the Fallout 2 image was from DNF? Right?
>> "How come nobody is blaming 3D Realms? It's their own fault for letting this game go more than ten years in development, because it certainly does not take that long to create any game."
3DRealms wasn't just sitting on their asses and doing nothing for income during those years, they were producing (just not developing) games... they even produced a little known game called Max Payne, you may have heard of it... I think there was even a small independent film based on it. =P
There were probably reasons the game kept getting delayed and maybe some internal problems, it'd be really interesting to hear about those. The first Duke 3D was rather innovative for its time, maybe the team kept having ideas and not being able to implement them with current technology, then tech improves and they go back and try those ideas again, and so on back and forth?
Plus expectations were so high for the sequel that they may have had an OCD like attention to every detail and getting everything just right.
Not bad but we all knew this game was not going to live up to expectations.
