Format war over! Toshiba announces the halt of HD DVD photo

After much rumor and speculation, it looks like the Grim Reaper himelf has finally come for HD-DVD: In a press conference held in Tokyo, Japan today, electronics giant Toshiba announced they will no longer manufacture HD DVD players and recorders. More from Toshiba CEO and president Atsutoshi Nishida:

“We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop ... While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”

Toshiba will reduce shipments of the HD DVD products immediately to retailers, with an aim to stop altogether as of March 2008. Volume production of HD DVD disk drives for PCs will also slow, although Toshiba has specified they will continue to try to meet customer requirements.

Well, I'm glad I have a PS3 right about now, but frankly I never championed either side of this war.  Blu-Ray certainly suffered its fair share of ridicule, and it's only now that the PS3's price has significantly dropped that people are even starting to take the format seriously. What's your take: is this the way you wanted it to go, or do you feel HD DVD got an unfair axing?

Press release after the jump, as usual.

Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses

Company Remains Focused on Championing Consumer Access to High Definition Content

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.

We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop, said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.

Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.

Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

This decision will not impact on Toshibas commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

The consumer didn't make this choice, film studios did by way of giant-ass checks sent to their offices. All this means is that I won't be buying movies anymore. Yay, piracy!

Seriously, the better format is lost here. Enjoy buying a new BluRay player every couple of months as Sony rolls out new features that older players can't be updated to utilize. If you bought a BluRay player before December of last year, you won't even be able to watch newer movies on the format in the coming months. Enjoy.

I was hoping both could live side by side.

HD DVD for PC stuff and Blu-Ray for movies.

The reason I say this is I think HD-DVD had a btter interconnection with PCs using Java and other web based code for there menu system and stuff. Also I liked the under-protection of region free.

Blu-ray has its own coding system and is very over protective with its DRM.

It depends in the end wether you think the movie industry is being ripped off by pirates or wether you want to be able to make easy back up copies to play the movie on whatever system.

In the end the Movie industry won and was an easy choice for them to pick blu-ray for its extra protection, until it gets cracked that is.

So much more could of been done with HD-DVD simply due to the coding already in use for pcs and online for interactivity.

I own both formats and I can tell you intially HD DVD was far superior. I know that "on paper" blu-ray has the specs in its favor, but "on screen" HD looked better. It had much better quality control: it's transfers look amazing, pretty much across the board, and almost every disc came with Dolby TrueHD or at least Digital Plus, unlike the early blu-rays which had shit transfers (some look like up-rez'ed dvd's) and standard def audio tracks.

I'm glad to see that blu-ray is putting more time and care into their releases now, but I will miss HD DVD. We had some good times. But Sony definitely outplayed Toshiba.

People who got a stand alone blu-ray player got screwed even without considering the upgradability... really, considering how much those things cost, they could have gotten a PS3 and gotten a game console with their HD player =p

My Final Words: I feel Hd-DvD should of won. It was the better format with the bettwe features. But there is no use crying over spiltmilk. And I suppose when the PS triples price drops down enough I'll pick up one for the soul pourpose that theres no point in buying a Blu-Ray player WITHOUT the videogame console attached to it.

You will be missed Hd-Dvd.

@Icarus One: Yeah, Blu-ray stumbled out of the gate, but HD DVD certainly has its fair share of crappy transfers. And as I said in a comment on [ur=http://www.destructoid.com/blogs/dvddesign+/why-all-the-lament-over-the-imminent-death-of-hd-dvd--70875.phtml]dvddesign’s blog[/url] yesterday, HD DVD’s space limitations manifested themselves in lesser audio options (see comment #23). Meanwhile, a lot of recent Blu-ray releases have come with PCM uncompressed audio tracks, and pretty much all semi-recent releases have at least a TrueHD track.

Very true. Considering it's been the cheapest Blu-Ray player the entire time, and the only one for now apparently that can upgrade, you'd have to be retarded to by a stand alone (even If you didn't care about the games).

I own both formats, a ps3 and the 360 add on. The add on was basically free with everything I got for free (Heroes Season 1, Big Lebowski, Transformers, +5 free mail in movies) so I'll enjoy when all the HD-DVDs are considered bargain bin liquidations.

gotta ask, why would you not get a PS3 when your all ready gonna be spending several hundred dollars on a Blu-ray player? At what they Price Blu-ray players you might as well get a console while your at it, instead of being exclusively against it...

@Hells_666

You are mistaken, Blu-ray bought out warner just before CES after HD-DVD had been in negotiations for exclusivity for a few months.

It's also not a bribe in corporate world, its an agreement.

Of course they went with who the people wanted, that was clearly shown by the blu-ray groups bigger cheque. That is what motivates companies, the bottom line.

I get it, you think Microsoft is evil (how original, do you come up with all your own ideas??), but if you think Sony is some mystical company that doesn't do shady things compared to Microsoft, you live in a dream land.

Anyway, blu-ray had outsold hd-dvd discs 5:1 last year, which is similar to a consumer choice. Of course most consumers had their choice forced on them when they bought a ps3. There were about 2 million hd-dvd players compared to 10 million BR players 'in the wild' so the consumer decision had been 'made' in the companies eyes.

What I was saying was that if movies became available solely through downloading piracy would shoot through the roof as obviously DVD and Blu-ray are making money with movies or else they wouldn't be releasing them.

As someone who prefers the 360 to the PS3 in terms of games, I guess I was rooting for the HD DVD. But seeing as there is ABSOLUTELY NO PRACTICAL SUPERIORITY BETWEEN EITHER FORMAT I'm really just happy its over; it's better for everyone that me.

If you ask me, Warner Bros. just flipped a coin because they didn't care but knew it had to be one already so that the scale would tip and it could finally end.

I already a own a PS3 and the real positive to come out of Blu-ray winning is that Universal and Paramount will start making movies on Blu-ray.

@dprime

Did they flip that coin before or after they were offered more money by blu-ray??

I'm not calling shenanigans or anything. I'm happy the war is over as well, but they hardly flipped a coin. They got a big, fat pay incentive.

Now to get around to buying that ps3, if they release a bigger HDD over this way anytime soon.

This was expected and welcome. Even though I hadn't been a Sony supporter for most of the PS3's lifetime, Blu-Ray just appears to be the superior format.

I am curious though. I wonder if the format war was truly "won" by the PS3, and if things would have ended differently if the 360 came with an HD-DVD drive. Certainly, Lost Odyssey wouldn't have had to stick a fourth disc in a paper sleeve, at least...

Both formats almost ended up being equal in the end, the pluses and minuses really evened things out between the two!

However market share and THE DEVIL (Wal-Mart) played a HUGE part in the formats worldwide presence. At least we know now and can all continue not to buy PS3s and wait until prices drop dramatically.

Good to know the winner though so they can finally work on later revisions of Blu-Ray.
