Forget Leisure Suit Larry, judge Team 17 by Worms photo

According to studio director Martyn Brown, developer Team 17 should be evaluated based on its latest release -- a downloadable Worms title -- instead of Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust. A novel idea considering how dreadful Team 17’s continuation of the classic adventure series was.

“I'll be open as anything. Larry didn't turn out great,” Brown told VideoGamer. “There are reasons why it didn't turn out great. I'm not going to rattle on about excuses. It's one of those things. You're only as good as your last game. Hopefully the new Worms on LIVE Arcade, other than a couple of bugs that went unnoticed on, not our testing unit but a testing unit, which we're fixing -- I think the Metacritic on that is 84, 85 per cent.”

Brown doesn’t believe that Team 17 has lost any fans because of Box Office Bust and hopes that Alien Breed, a self-published downloadable title, will show that the studio has talent and the ability to make good games.

“Certainly with Alien Breed, if anybody's got any grumbles about what we can and can't do, they'll see the amount of effort and care put into a product where we're unbridled by any nonsense we had to deal with in the Larry project.”

“Yeah, hands up, it wasn't great. At the end of the day people don't have to buy anything. They go on reviews, they go on demos and everything else. If people make that decision that's unfortunate. It's not something we're worried about.”

The bigger question here, left unaddressed and unasked, is why Leisure Suit Larry still exists. There are a ton of worthy and more compelling adventure series -- King's Quest, Quest for Glory, Space Quest to name a few -- left untouched. Let's roll the dice with one of these, eh Activision? Nothing can be as bad as Box Office Bust. Nothing.

I thought all Leisure Suit Larry games were developed and published by Sierra

Was the original developer of Leisure Suit Larry even consulted in making these newer Leisure Suit Larry titles?

So they are seeking praise for not gimping the latest version of Worms too much? Worms Armageddon for PC was pretty much perfect 10 years ago and they have been struggling to implement it on XBLA, with a botched first version, and the latest one has a mysteriously absent level editor.

What they have done with LSL is dreadful, just get Al Lowe involved and pay what he wants.

Wow I didnt know those guys were behind that pile of shit..... As hard as it was they made a game that was even worse than the first one on the original xbox.

Yeah the new worms problems pisses me off. I get to level 28 of the campaign and it deletes my save cause i take my gamertag with me to other systems.

I refuse to play the campaign until its fixed. I can't not take my gamertag around with me.

@ Chronic Logic,

Nope. Al Lowe was the original creator and he wasn't consulted for this or the last Larry game.

I agree with Brad. Where is a Kings quest, Space Quest, or Quest For Glory sequel? That would be fantastic.

I didn't even realize Team 17 did Box Office Bust before now. And really "Team 17" is synonymous with "Worms" for me, so they don't have much to worry about in that regard. However, I also didn't know before now that they were working on a new non-Worms game, and I don't know if I'll be interested in that one.

After playing the Monkey Island Remake, I have absolutely no idea how Team 17 managed to butcher the LSL franchise as badly as they did with Box Office, they could have easily revived the franchise and made it good but instead created the biggest pos I have ever played. They even managed to make it shittier than Magna Cum Laude, Good work guys lol

Still kinda bitter about buying the shitty version of Worms on XBL, why not just make a REALLY GOOD version once and for all, what a bunch of jerks.

@Chronic Logic

No, he wasn't.

I agree with him. While Magna Cum Laude was definitely some pure, weapons grade shit, it is still heavenly bliss when compared to Box Office Bust. At least Magna Cum Laude still had the feel of a LSL game, somewhat.

Box Office Bust had combat. And vehicles. And wall jumping. I mean, what in the crispy fuck, seriously.

Also, they replaced Jan Rabsen, who is THE voice of Larry Laffer, with... this bullshit. It's unforgivable.

"Hey guys, c'mon! We're still awesome! Judge us by our latest game: Worms. And then you can just us on our next game: Alien Breed. Don't judge us on old crap, just the stuff we keep re-hashing to stay alive! Please?"
