Forced installs and the PS3: Are they here to stay? photo

As more and more developers have come to grips with the complexity of  programming for it, supporters of the platform have seen a resurgence of the PlayStation brand. Several high profile games have landed in the waiting hands of eager gamers, and for the most part, mirror their Xbox 360 counterparts -- but has it come at a cost? The PS3 really is beginning to morph into a PC, and that has startled some fans of console gaming.

We saw the first glimpse of this when we started downloading demos from PSN. Instead of mimicking the relatively seamless Xbox Live formula that we had been accustomed to, Sony opted to have us install the games on our hard drive in a way that closely resembled the PC experience.

Next came news that Epic was offering us the choice of installing Unreal Tournament III on the drive, in an effort to shorten loading times. We shrugged it off again, as it seemed to be in our best interests at the time. The key to it all was that we were still empowered by choice: we could still enjoy the game without the install, and it never once felt forced.

More on this, after the jump.

Then came the stunner that sent 40GB PS3 owners reeling: Devil May Cry 4 would require you to install the game before playing it. As expected, message boards lit up with angry gamers wondering why the Xbox 360 -- a Microsoft platform -- was able to do what the PS3 version could not: play smoothly without making us sit through a 20-minute install beforehand. After all, wasn't Devil May Cry native to the PlayStation bloodline?

Now we have word from of PS3Style (who claims to have a pre-release copy of the game) that they've done it again with the port of Lost Planet. Stunning? Maybe not, but I wouldn't exactly call it welcome news either. The option to install the game on your PS3 is attractive, but the magic is sort of lost when the choice is taken away from us. And bear in mind, we're not talking about some upstart company here -- this is Capcom, and they are highly respected for creating some of the greatest games on any platform.

So what does this mean for the future of the PS3? Can this be tossed aside as part of the growing pains that we must endure while the last remaining gremlins (with programming for it) are ironed out... or is this the price we have to pay for Sony making their console so radical in the eyes of those that give it life -- through their code?

We've seen some spectacular games on the PS3 since its release, and we look forward to a time when the console's big names really start flowing onto the platform like in the past. However, we hope that developers don't use the hard drive as a crutch much longer. We prefer to see it supplement our games instead, like the way things used to be. Regardless of what happens, we don't want to see forced installs becoming a trend. It has to stop.

How many games have been released for the PS3 in the US so far? I think it's around 130, I'm not sure though. And how many have required an install(not including PSN games) in order to play them? I think it's just one, but I haven't played them all so I'm not completely sure. I don't see how this is that big of a problem.

@mandlebaum123:
I did, thank you.
Also, best off-topic ever. LOL

Yeah, I kind of don't think it's bullshit, but it certainly stinks like it. It's like I said previously, while the Saturn gave me ability to save games without buying a memory card forehand, the PlayStation didn't. And THAT is bullshit.

And even after that, ONE memory card for the Saturn was all you needed, ever, really.

(not talking about RAM cards, so none of you smart asses start whining)

Memory cards I thought were bullshit at the time, but they have their merits, like portability. Even so, they do not affect the ability of games to run on a system. Delete a save file, start from the beginning. Delete the install, and you aren't playing.

I miss the days of games being saved on the cart itself. Some new 10TB cart technology needs to come out. It'd float gaming for a generation.

There's been a big uproar after just one forced install. You don't think developer will take notice of this, and maybe consider giving the players a choice of install?

Why they would ever take away the option if they didn't have to? Lost planet install is not necessary on 360, but is on ps3.

You guys should complain to Capcom. If you didn't notice, the only game that requires you to install it before playing is DMC4 which is made by Capcom. Lost Planet is also made by Capcom...

I picked up Bladestorm this past week for the PS3 and as I was messing around with the options I noticed an option for an HDD dump. I decided to go through with it and the load times are almost non-existant because of it.

I think HD installs are a great idea if it's an option, but if they force you to do the dump then it could be a bit frustrating for many gamers.

If the hard drive space is there you might as well use it for something. If installing to the HDD makes some function of the game easier to program for, I don't see what the big deal is. If you get to play your game and it's awesome, why the heck would you complain about it?

I don't understand, the Wii doesn't have enough HDD space and people complain, but people don't want to use the space on their PS3's anyway?

@mandlebaum.

I don't know why they would force you to install. They probably just wanted the game to run as smooth as possible on both consols. Hopefully they will notice people are unhappy with it, and give the option of installing if you want to. I just don't think this is as bad as people are making it out to be.

I'll agree a forced install is a little annoying. I personally don't mind them too much because they do make loadtimes faster. In the case of Devil May Cry 4, Capcom wanted to put the mandatory install on the Xbox 360 but Microsoft doesn't allow downloads over 150 MB on the 360. So this isn't a matter of one console being more powerful then the other it's simply a choice of the developers. In any case the loadtimes for DMC4 are faster on the PS3 not by much but they are faster. Remember this technology is fairly new to the developers and down the line they will be able to utilize it better but in any case the forced install should be optional no required. This is an issue with the developers because if Capcom could they would 360 users making a sandwich and checking their e-mail over the "terrible" 20 min install.

Oh and another thing. Honestly, if you put that disc into your console and it asked," Would you like to install DMC4 onto your HDD for shorter loadtimes?" you wouldn't of done it?

Considering that the only forced 5gb installs are DMC4, LP, and HSG 5, I wouldn't be too worried. If EVERY developer starts doing it, then you should be worried. Now, all you're doing is writing a flame bait piece that will be sure to generate hits. GOOD JOB!

i like it in most cases like oblivion but that is 5+gigs to install but it is needed as that game is huge and i don't like anything spinning in the drive that isn't needed. every time i quit a game i hit the eject just so its not burning the drive unnecessarily. but a 3+gig install is too much for a crap game like skate where i see load screens just as much.but like ut3 i value it because i now have over 70 mods and they load pretty quick but i also think why does dmc4 have 5+gigs of install? fuct if i know. but i am running out of space due to me always downloading movies from joox, even now i just downloaded killer clowns from outer space and live free or die hard but i'll keep what i like get rid of what i don't. i wish resistance and motorstorm had big installs cus the loading in them is horrifyingly long. #1_in_the_hood_G!!

Of course you will, and every other PS3 owner that wants to play this game.

If you like something, you will endure mostly anything.

It's like me and Sonic Adventure 2, the game was so buggy and therefore hard, but I still finished it because part of it that was enjoyable, filled a certain void of gameplay I was itching for.

You touched on a different topic there.

Installing games games is good and bad, but the PS3 has blu ray discs that hold more and can do more, doesn't that effect the measures they claim installing would help?

Ha. I remember people bitching about the 360 and Microsoft's policy of not allowing games to require a hard drive, because it made certain games like Oblivion and Mass Effect have problems.

Bitch, bitch, bitch. Whine, whine, whine. If you want your cake and to be able to eat it to, build yourself a goddamn PC.

I kinda feel like an ass when I say this, but who the fuck cares... apparently the PS3 fanboys love to pay more for long installs and the threat of needing to upgrade there HDD.

Its unfortunate that they can't see how this affects them as a whole, rather than blowing it off as no big deal. I'm getting a kick out of it to be honest... at its all at the expense of the PS3 fanboys that have posted so far :P

"360 you have to pay for XBOX Live!! YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR WIRELESS! You have to pay to make it like a PS3!!"

PS3 you've gotta pay more JUST TO FIT YOUR GOD DAMNED GAMES on your fucking console. Jesus, where does it end? Forget the load times, and look at the fact that its got 5gb installs, and that a HDD doesn't have infinite space. Sure you could go out and upgrade your HDD, but what NORMAL person is going to do that? NONE, just you Uber-PS3 fanboys. Most normal PS3 owners probably aren't even aware that they can upgrade there hard drive.

So don't act like a dick and take the cop-out route and say that its no big deal, because it is, and if you sat down to think a bout it before firing your 'PSTRIPPLE' cannon you'd see a problem with it as well.

Now I'm gonna get back to playing DMC4 without having to install it. GOD I can't wait to see how big the install for Metal Gear 4 is gonna be for you kids, lol! :D

Storm in a teacup. Only DMC4 has done it to me so far, and I was happy to let it do it. When a game offers the install option, I do it. Still got a crapload of free space left, I delete the stuff I don't use.

Just for the record, I have DMC4 and UT3 for the PS3. Both games are great, but I appreciate the choice that Epic gave me. On the consumer end, choice is king. This is hurting Sony, and they need to do everything in their power to correct it -- unless they want to lose more business to the Xbox 360.

As soon as he said e've seen some spectacular games on PS3, I stopped reading. Lol. I'm still waiting for spectacular, Mate. I love my Motorstorm and that's about it. Weakest machine in terms of variety. That better change soon. But I noticed that a lot of games require install first and I figured it was just a PS3 thing, but I was concerned about space since I only have a 40gb one.

Maybe its a master conspiracy between Sony and the companies to force gamers into buying new PS3 SKU's with greater, fatter HD???

The choice is good, but since its a console its a choice we shouldn´t be required to make. Pray that MGS 4 doesn´t require us to play the trilogy while it installs Guns of the Patriots...

For people with itty bitty drives this isn't great news and even for people with larger drives a forced install might deter them. For games in the future I'll plan ahead and put the game in 30 mins before I want to play.

I am in the works of tossing in a 250gig Western Digital drive for $160 so I'll be good for pretty much anything and everything.

I remember prior to the PS3's release that you would have to do this with every game, due to the read speed limitations of that generation of Blu-Ray drives. Word was you'd have to copy around 5GB onto the hard drive for all the games you wanted to play, and then do the old refrigerator thing when it got full.
