Forbes says Valve's more valuable than Apple and Google photo

Perk up a bit, fellow PC gamers! Despite some rather disappointing news coming from the darker side of our sector of the industry, comfort yourself in the knowledge that at least some folks are doing well for themselves without succumbing to the allure of the console toys. Who am I talking about? Obviously, I'm talking about Valve.

A recent Forbes profile of Valve founder and gatling gun blacksmith Gabe Newell noted that Valve, thanks to its Steam digital distribution platform, was "tremendously profitable", with an estimated 2010 revenue in the "high hundreds of millions of dollars". Though it doesn't release financial reports, Valve itself is allegedly valued at two to four billion dollars.

Wait, what? That's not a whole lot in the world of big corporations. Google is worth an estimated $192 billion, and Apple a whopping $300 billion. The trick is in perspective! For running a platform that controls up to 70% of the PC game download market (which recently passed retail sales for overall revenue), Valve only employs 250 people. That's a fraction of a fraction of Google and Apple's corporate population. So, taken on a per-employee basis, Valve is worth more. Clever!

All that said, the PC gaming market is still smaller than the console market, making up just 8% of the $50 billion industry. Plus, publishers make a much larger margin per sale on PC games via Steam versus retail, roughly 70% versus 30%. AND, for better or worse, gamers can't sell PC games back onto the used market, eliminating that publisher annoyance.

Long story short, PC gaming is hardly "dead". But PC gamers knew that already. We're cool like that.

PC gaming is by no means dead, it's just called "STEAM" now.

I only recently jumped back into PC gaming after a good decade hiatus, and man does Steam make life easy, and pleasent and just all round awesome.

Funnily all those years ago, my poison of choice was Counter Strike played on Valve servers, and then 10 years later i get back and who is there to greet me?

Good old Valve.

I'm often cynical about big corporations in this industry, but Valve truly deserve their size.

this is cool. Google is an arm of the US governemnt so no wonder that they make money. Apple makes its marketing campaign on slamming "PC" essentially they are saying "you don't want a computer, you want a mac!" hahahaha

Fuck google and Apple. Google/DARPA nuff said. Apple = profitable because of fanbois.

Is there anything more to add?

8% seems crazy low. Where do you have that number?
What is even more crazier is 70:30 to steam:retail. I know steam took a big pie of retailers but this huge? Wow!

Blame Microsoft for the 8%. They're the ones who made Gears 2, Fable 2 and 3, Halo 3 stay Xbox 360 exclusive even though their prequels were on the PC. Even Alan Wake was supposed to be for the PC too, but was cancelled because of greedy Microsoft.

Okay, PC only Developers (which isn't Valve anymore) will support PC as they are small teams and will reap profit off of any sale. Big wigs like EA, Ubisoft and Activision will neglect it because they don't make profit. When You only have small developers left, PC gaming will be a shell of it's former self.

Part of what makes Valve such a success with its community is the fact that it remains a private company, not a public corporation. It has zero responsibility to shareholders. Way to go, Valve!

Also, congrats to Gabe on the spectacular weight loss. Keep it up, friend.

ehh the PC is not dead. is just that it's not that big anymore. don't get me wrong PC games still have one of the most active communities in terms of mods and such compared to consoles. but the days where most games are being made specifically for the PC platform continue to diminish over time. indies are good but i also want big budget titles that have quality and optimization on their mind.

can't wait for The Witcher 2 and Deus Ex HR though :D

I'm still amused by Destructoid's pushing of Crysis leaking as news. Most games (not PC games, games. Full stop) leak about a week before release. This is not news. It is not surprising. It is a story made news to support a feature.

People who say PC gaming is dead usually are not PC gamers. It's been going strong since digital distribution became the norm.

Good old Valve. Steam was a little annoying at first but they really turned it into something great. PC gaming just gets more and more convenient.
