As reported, the God of War III demo is live, with customers who pre-ordered the game already receiving vouchers for the game.

I went out of my way to get my own voucher for a few reasons. First, despite having seen this very demo played multiple times since last February, I had never actually played it. I'm a huge fan of the series -- I'd probably lump God of War I, II, and the PlayStation Portable's Chains of Olympus into some kind of "favorite games ever" file. But at E3, I saw another demo and did a Q&A with the devs, at PAX the lines were too long, and ditto for Tokyo Game Show.

But I'm not totally selfish. The second (and main, I promise!) reason was I wanted to make sure we could bring you guys video of the full demo in action. So here it is, nearly 20 minutes of God of War III in action. A few notes after the jump.

This is an unfinished build of the game, so despite its incredible looks, it's not free of issues. There's even a message you'll see before the "Press Start" screen that makes this point very clear. You'll see the game stutter from time to time, and sometimes you'll hear sounds drop out. In fact, I played through the demo five times, and it completely froze on me twice. Compared to the demos for God of War I, II, and Chains of Olympus, III is the most unpolished of them all.

But I have little doubt that Sony Santa Monica will have worked all of these kinks out in time for the game's March release. There's simply no room for error in this long-awaited sequel. It barely scratches the surface of what's in store for the final game, not even hinting at the game's major addition in terms of gameplay and technology -- moving Titans that act as the game's world throughout Kratos' quest. The demo only seems like a taste, a reassurance to fans that the game is on track to be as good, if not better than its predecessors.

We'll see next March, when God of War III ships. I think I'll be buying that Ultimate Edition.

Man these pre-video ads are PAINFUL, Destructoid!

As for the demo: yea, it's pretty much God of War 2 with a new sheen. But then again, that's what God of War 2 was to 1, and that game was still incredible.

Yes, I know I want to watch Red Cliffs, but for damns sake make it stop. That and the ads that pop up are distracting.

But at least Red Cliffs is better then COTTON THE FABRIC OF OUR LIVES!!!

@Magnalon:

I'm sorry about the ads; we're working on making sure they're more appropriate to you audience. :(

Also, God of War III demo FTW. Hope you guys enjoy seeing it in action, if you haven't had a chance to play it yet.

@Nick Chester, I don't mind the Red Cliff ads at all. After all, Red Cliff is pretty much the Dynasty Warriors movie. :)

Man, that was epic! I haven't seen any vids of this in a while, I had forgotten how beast the game is. Also, that was probably the best demo I have ever seen. It gives you just the right amount of awesomeness before it ends with that brilliant flight sequence finale.

Just got back from GameStop and the massive demo is downloading into my PS3 as I type...
Funny, the GameStop employee hadn't a clue the demo was even available! He had to make a quick call to a Manager, I assume, who then led him to a curious FedEx package. He then goes on to slowly open the parcel and tell me I'm lucky... Lucky because I got one of the only two demo vouchers available to those who hadn't previously pre-ordered the game. I threw down my five bucks and said, "I'm not lucky, I read Destructoid."
And that is exactly why I love DTOID! Thanks for the early heads-up Nick, you rock!
Time to go rid Helios of his head. ;)

If these games weren't so repetitive, they'd be the best ever.

GoW1 had the same skeleton soldiers like 500 times, for example.

But man, you just ripped of the Sun God's head. That's so hardcore...

There are a lot of moments where I cringed because it was so gruesome. Holy hell. There were as many times where I actually yelled "WHY? Why would you do that? It's ALREADY DEAD!"

Okay, I'm all for great looking games, but holy shit why the hell does it have to be so frakking gruesome? Seriously, when the fuck did everyone become completely okay with watching someone's head get ripped off or eyes get pulled out of their sockets?

I mean, seriously, when we're getting to photorealistic games, there has to limits to violence. The stuff going on in that demo is fucked up by any measure.

@LoopholeJumper: Please take you and your douche bag personality the fuck out of here. People are allowed to say whatever the hell they please even if you disagree with them.

Anyway -- before I was distracted by this slab of pathetic meat, I kind of realized why I dislike Kratos so much. He's a massive asshole and I will not be playing this game. I could not stand watching this video.

Though, I am the type of person that can't play bad guys when given the choice.

Apparently being male means you have to be a whiny little bitch who can't handle a legitimate piece of criticism on a game that begs to be criticized and critiqued. No, I probably won't wind up playing the game, but I reserve the right to call it how I see it and it's my opinion that hyper-violence like this is a trend that can't last when games are moving closer and closer to photorealism.

Now excuse while I go suck on my wife's tits.

Yep this demo looks fucking amazing. I called up my local Eb games and they didn't have the demo in. Maybe its only for American stores. But either way, Ill be getting this demo when I get the god of war collection and when I get District 9. So I wont have any shortage of demo codes.

I'll be getting the GOW collection when it comes out for PS3 so I'll enjoy this awesomeness then, I just finished COO for PSP and it was a solid title, though short. Haven't played GOW 2 yet, and the moment I saw that the GOW collection was coming to ps3 I knew why I had been waiting.

I've played God of War I and II but never really thought 'this is amazing!' but god damn... GOD OF WAR III is AMAZING!!!

Framerate and sound issues aside... the demo is bar far the best demo i've ever played.

First things first:

Demo = AWESOMEMEST SHIT EVAR!

Now that that's done it's rant time, *ahem*, why is it that people for years have wanted more realistic games with blood, violence and madness and when someone finally pulls it off it suddenly rains criticism on them? W.T.F.? seriously!, if it's not up to your tastes, fine don't play/buy it, a little bit over the top? fuck yeah, but that's what people have been screaming for years now and constantly said they are disappointed when they don't get it. This isn't a game that's marketed for little 8 year olds, people, it's an incredibly detailed action packed game that pulls all stops to give it's very best for core gamers that crave this experience. Too much for you? fine, don't play it. Still wanna play it? there's probably an option somewhere in the option menu to disable the gore. Still to much? FUCK OFF then! but stop throwing empty criticism about violence just cuz it's not to your liking.

I dunno . . . I loved the first two games on my first playthroughs, but the second time around I was bored. Seeing the same enemies and combos in this video is not boding well for me.

Did I really only see 2 out of 44 people point out similar concerns about repetitiveness? I'm genuinely surprised that everyone's so hyped, though I guess I shouldn't be that baffled. It's popular, and it's fun. Can't rip on that. Still, the only things that struck me as new were the Icarus vent sequence and the cestus weapon. Same old cyclops, same old footsoldiers, and a chimaera that fights a lot like a cerberus/minotaur in past games. I got really excited when they formed a phalanx; and then Kratos just blew it away and fought them all like normal :( . At least they moved the QTE indicators to the side of the screen, I guess.

Oh, and I don't think it's any more "gruesome" than GoW II. Remember smashing that guy's head in the door?

I'll probably play it, but I'm not yet impressed by that demo. I absolutely appreciate the posting of it, though, so that I can form this opinion. Right on, Nick.

But I have little doubt that Sony Santa Monica will have worked all of these kinks out in time for the game's March release. There's simply no room for error in this long-awaited rolex watches sequel. It barely scratches the surface of what's in store for the final game, not even hinting at the game's major addition in terms of gameplay and technology -- moving Titans that act as the game's world throughout Kratos' quest.
