For those about to ROCK, check this list and see if your guitars will work first photo

Instrument compatibility has been a bit of a sticking point between the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchises, with last year's plastic guitars being incompatible with their competing product on all consoles except the 360. And with Activision doing all they can to whore their series, confusion could very well be in place for less educated gamers. That's probably why compatibility charts have cropped up on the official Guitar Hero community forum.

The charts show which instruments will function in which games (at a playable capacity, at least) and lists the products for both Rock Band and Guitar Hero. They even tossed in the ION drum kit for those who are willing to make the hefty investment. No other third-party instruments are listed, which probably isn't a big deal for the discerning consumer with class who knows what to buy, but could leave some people scratching their heads if they're foolish enough to invest in somebody else's guitar peripheral.

As should suprise nobody, Wii users are getting the hardest shaft, with neither set of instruments having any cross-game compatibility at all. Once again, it kinda sucks to only have the little waggle machine as your only gaming option.

Check out the gallery for each of the compatibility lists.

[UPDATE: As many of you have pointed out, this list is woefully wrong. Some combinations listed as working do not, while others that are said to be incompatible are perfectly fine. It's a little ridiculous that the "official" list from Activision is so riddled with errors, but I suppose we probably shouldn't have been surprised. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.]

If I need to read charts before enjoying a videogame, something is seriously wrong.

I blame EA. Are they involved? Even if they're not, its their fault.

I don't know about you guys, but I definitely have used my Rock Band 1 and 2 guitars with GH Aerosmith on the 360. Somebody needs to fact-check a little more thoroughly.

I wish my rock band guitar worked with guitar hero 3. I am so tired of buying plastic instruments.

That does suck. It seems like you're screwed into owning four guitars on the Wii if you want to have co-op on all games.

Once again, I'd like to thank both Actvision/Neversoft and Harmonix for completely screwing over Wii owners. We really appreciate all your hard work for providing the best experience on all consoles...except ours.

This is an inaccurate article, methinks. From everything I've read, including THIS story:

Rock Band 2 will support GH guitars. I would assume, as well, that this means both GHWT and GH3 Les Pauls. Did you guys update this is the last 5 months, or is this the same lists we saw all summer? You know, before the game was out and we had all this new information...

That says I can use my Rock Band drums for GH:WT, but how would that work? There's an extra pad for the GH:WT kit...

I've tried the POS Guitar Hero World Tour Drums with Rock Band 2 on a PS3 and didn't work... RB2 sees them as a normal controller and wants you to stick a mic in.

BTW anyone else get the shaft when trying to return GHWT? I have two full sets... both drums suck and overall so does the game.

A little waggle is better than no waggle? Plus I still have my guitar from RB1 so I don't need my GH guitar to work anymore for RB2

It's nice to have a chart like this. It would be even nicer if it was correct. Unless the game was humoring my friend all this time, the PS2 Kramer works on Rock Band.

Dear Destructoid:

This article was posted eight hours ago. Clearly, the majority of comments in this thread point out that the charts are factually wrong in many regards.

(hint: a responsible website might remove the article, or otherwise correct the information on the charts. It doesn't take eight hours to remove bad/incorrect information)
