You really ought to be playing MineCraft right now. Psst: it's still available as a free download.

Here's a video explaining what the game is, exactly, in case you are unwilling to educate yourself on such matters without the aid of a video. It's an exceptionally unique game, so I can understand why you'd be skeptical -- and perhaps even overwhelmed -- at first.

For whatever reason, the fan video is set up to mimic the trailer for Inception, although the music does fit the mood of MineCraft quite well, surprisingly. And if that's too traditional a pitch for you, consider checking out the hilarious fire video (attached below) that made the rounds yesterday. Also, this.

And that is why you don't build a fire pit next to a bookcase inside a log cabin.

If I wasn't already convinced that Minecraft is awesome this would probably do it.

I feel like that lesson would be more effective if it featured a blocky J. Walter Weatherman and his blocky prosthetic arm.

It is free so I guess I'm running out of excuses not to play it. However does this game rely upon user created content? I'm really getting tired of creating my own levels and characters when my ideas don't turn out nearly as good as I'd hoped, and while there is professionally made content in normal games.

The entire game is about creating a home and more, but it's not presented in a "level-editor" type of way. It's like...ehh...Castaway. It's all about survival, and eventually when you gain enough resources, you thrive.

Can someone give me a brief explanation as to what this game is exactly about? It looks like fun and I want to try it, I just have no idea what it's about.

I finally tried it over the free weekend, went from "wtf is this" to hopelessly addicted in about an hour. I think I'd be sickened by the level of addiction this game comes with, but I care more about mining some iron so I can finish my track so I can get to my sky house so I can build it higher so I... yeah. Shit.

For anyone thinking about playing but not knowing how to get started, just look go Here when you first open the game. It may look confusing now, but in a short time, you'll probably be addicted. Sorry.

It looks good, I really like the art style, but I can't really do pay to play model games (which I heard this was, I might be very mistaken), and wouldn't feel right about playing it free a bit.

It looks a BIT like Harvest Moon from a first person viewpoint... which is no bad thing, just I don't know...

@WarZombie If you were to download the client you would be playing Alpha mode where you spawn and just try to survive. You punch some trees to get some logs, then turn logs in to wood and wood into a crafting table. You pretty much take it from there setting your own goals, you versus the game world.

I made a basic two story house, then an epic mine, and then surrounding walls. Then I built an elevator to the highest point the map allows. Planning on a glass sky house. Oh yeah.

You should try running it at Normal distance instead of Far. Its in the options at the pause menu. That should help the frame rate.

Ridiculous sky houses are where it's at.

@ Mark - The game is still a work in progress, which might be where you got that impression from, but once you pay the asking price you are good to go. Permanently. Also, when it's finished, it'll almost certainly cost more than it does now. He's just rewarding early adopters, is all.

then there are videos like this that makes me glad it exists.

i downloaded this on sunday.. played for 20 minutes, didn't get it. yesterday i read a beginner's guide at work, went home and tried again. played pretty much 6 hours straight until i dragged myself to bed, dreamed about the game all night, and now im back at work reading about it.

this game is pure addiction. i'm already thinking about what i want to build when i get home.

i'm so glad they did this free weekend because it's definitely sold me on a game i never would have bothered to try before. maybe the best thing yet, is it runs on my old 2006 macbook so i can play it on the couch and my gf won't give me shit for holding myself upstairs in the computer room all night.

For those who are iffy on the price, the game is about 7 euros or so (which is like 12 bucks or so Canadian) to own the game completely. It's only free right now because the servers are overloaded and can't handle purchases (apparent if you go to minecraft.net). Once everything is back, you will need to purchase the game to keep playing again, however it's so cheap, and soooo worth it (even in it's alpha stage) that I would recommend it to anyone. Also, it's a one time purchase.

Addicted? Yes, I am. I'm currently re-building my cobblestone house into a brick house and building a wall of lava surrounding my island (frozen ocean) so the creepers and such can't get in. Also, recently found a dungeon (yay!).

Minecraft has got to be the most addictive indie game I've ever played. Be sure to read the wiki when getting started:

I played it for a few minutes a long time ago, and also the updated version yesterday. I'm not interested really.

It's a building game, you build stuff. You could also build specific stuff but it doesn't really do much.

Personally I prefer a game like 'Stranded 2' (which is also free). You're alone on an island (which is randomly generated) and you have to collect and combine materials to build USEFUL equipment to help you survive (like a fishing rod). You hunt for food/water in its many forms to keep yourself alive. You need to do stuff like build a shelter because without one you won't last long. There is also a basic story mode and other game types in the game.

The game has a POINT. Without a goal, I kinda feel like I'm wasting time here.

That said the game has a nice visual style and interesting concept, but maybe the designer could introduce a zombie apocalype at nighttimes to give you a reason to MINE and CRAFT.

its a great game but don't forget its not finished its missing a lot of stuff that is planned for it, i would recommend you hold off from playing for some months until we get a solid release

Funnily enough, minecraft has pretty much everything you mentioned. It's all about survival at the beginning, as you need to create a shelter and collect enough resources to survive at night, when all sorts of nasties come out from their underground hide-outs, including zombies.
Then the game turns towards exploration, as you brave dangerous caves in search of new minerals.

I felt like there was a point. Though I haven't played Stranded 2, which might be vastly superior for all I know. Oh, there is also a fishing rod in Minecraft, although it currently doesn't do anything and is only good for hitting stuff right now ;)

The comparison to "Castaway" is good.

For me, it's like a cross between The Sims and Resident Evil...except you start with nothing, have no hope of "finding" items, and have to scavenge for the raw materials to build your own tools and weapons. And it never ends.
