Initial D, the Japanese street racing manga turned Sega racing game, has been released on just about every platform since the Sega Saturn. The latest in the series, Initial D: Extreme Stage, will be making its way to the PlayStation 3, and Siliconera has some new footage from the game.

Set to be released next month in Japan, Extreme Stage will use the PlayStation Network to make up for the lack of local 2-player action.  National time attack mode and downloadable content will also be available online. So, that's really just a nice way of saying that there is no multiplayer, right?

Regardless, this promotional movie looks good. Fans of the the manga/anime or the game series should be pretty pleased with the visuals. They will be able to slide around the corners of dangerous mountain roads in glorious high-resolution graphics.

Fans should also check out the Japanese Web site.

Have you ever given Inital D a spin? Have you ever tried one of the deluxe arcade cabinets?

Not sure what I just watched, but it looks awfully fun. If it's anything like some game I once played in an arcade, it'll be good :)

Do you guys remember "Auto Modellista" the cell shaded racing game? That was seriously pretty cool.

another reason i'll be happy for my PS3 whenever I get it.

After finally playing the arcade stage about 4 years ago, I fell in love with the anime/manga/eurobeat musicish junk.

stilllll waiting for Arcade stage 4...

I love racing games, this doesn't entice me.

I've played this at the arcade. Quite fun, only bad thing was all the idiots there waiting to play that had no idea what drifting really is.

Meh. This game doesn't have an excuse not to have a split-screen multiplayer or online-multiplayer. The graphics weren't mind blowing even in the arcades.

It also has one of the most silliest racing physics I've ever seen in a racing game. You have to break your notion of how to properly drive a car, easy if you don't drive IRL, but pretty annoying when you do drive. I agree with Optimus Prime about the people in arcades.

On a side note, I enjoyed Season 4 of the anime (the other seasons aren't that good, knocked them off with Battle Stage), wonder how long till Season 5? I've been waiting for years dammit.

Eh, I hope it supports my Logitech DF, that would be a great excuse to finally use it again.

I played one of the Initial D games in the Arcade. It was kind of fun except for the part where you couldn't turn the music down... Don't get me wrong I like the music from the show/game, but I'd like to keep my hearing as well.

Brahms: I thought they were ok by the Stage 4.

Play-Asia has it for import & they say they'll be including a translated manual

" No Region Protection"
"This Asia version contains an English language manual!"

There is a cabinet at a Lotte cinema here in Korea. I have my own card and everything. Initial D is pure driving joy.

they always include a translated manual...at least now for ID games. (either now or best of is in english.)

I agree with the physics of the game. It throws everything out the window for its own arcady drift feel. It's a love or hate thing.

and yes, most of the players, save the typcial asians, really have no idea what drifting is. Lets not get started on the people who think they can drift IRL.

I'm not familiar with the series. With that said, I'll also say the footage was indeed skidding around the corner, to the point where it told me nothing.

Kinda hard to get excited about pre-rendered CG and pre-selected camera angles.

Burt:

Drifting is basically a controlled slide. It was invented in Japan in the togue (twisty mountain roads). Very dangerous if you dont know what youre doing.
