During E3, James Cameron came out on stage at Ubisoft's press conference to talk about one of my most anticipated films of the year, Avatar, and the game tied into it. He then spent 30 minutes putting the audience to sleep and rambling on about what amounted to "Avatar is awesome, and I worked on the game too." It actually put a damper on my excitement for the game and the movie, despite his obvious excitement over it. I wasn't really alone, as Anthony "it's not art" Burch came away from his demo of the game being mostly not blown away. I suppose it was nice to see a major director so involved with a game.
The hype machine marches on for both film and game, however, and if this superbly-put-together dev diary for the game doesn't make you a bit more excited about the world of Pandora, then you clearly don't appreciate glowing markers enough. The diary basically restates what Cameron blabbed on about for 30 minutes, but does it in a much shorter fashion and with actual gameplay. If we had been shown this at E3, I think everyone would have come away far more excited about the game, and the film itself. We'll just have to wait and see if the game and movie are anywhere near as epic as Cameron thinks they are.
Also, if Ubisoft wants to send Destructoid a stereoscopic 3D television set so we can review this game in its fullest, we'd be happy to take it. I believe we've already demonstrated that we have no issue with greed, and we will gladly buy tacos with the television once we're done with it.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
All that creative effort for a decade for a generic space garden theme, a worn out 'isn't nature great, isn't technology and war terrible' message and a game that looks like a poor mans Lost Planet.
Waste of my fucking time.
He did?
Also... big deal. Hype is hardly new to the gaming industry. The game looks like it could be fun, irrespective of it's "generic" theme, or the fact that it looks as though it resembles the ABYSMAL Lost Planet series.
The industry is full of examples of people making wild claims and falling far short of the mark. And some of those examples are in the form of "AAA" flagship titles that are so terrible it feels like the only reason they're popular is bandwagoning.
Is that how you say it?? Not Youbisoft?
Colonize a planet that has an insane climate, check.
mecha? check
wierd animal/natural inhabitant that is organic yet bulletproof? check
humans versus said natural inhabitant? check
And honestly, even if it does play a lot like LP, who cares? It's not like there are a ton of third-person shooters out there. As long as it does it well, then great. What worries me is more the fear that despite all this talk, there's still a chance that we'll end up with a 5 hour game with no compelling multiplayer.
Oh you did NOT just diss the LP...
Eh, it was alright :) Abysmal might be a bit harsh. Underwhelming is probably a better way to describe it (for me, personally, anyway).
I'm starting to think that maybe I'm just too picky :(
Are you sure about that? The last ad I saw showed a kid with an arrow down his forehead, just like in the cartoon.
I have to agree, Neon Light is my favorite. I can only pray that I'll be hearing this song outside of cutscenes, while exploring New Mambosa. I doubt it...but it sure would be cool.
