Flame bait from game designers who say 'F**k Halo' photo

David Jaffe's blog Jaffe's Game Design is always an entertaining read, but the responses to a recent post should prove to be very entertaining in the coming days. After that, we expect a steady decline in response post quality.

You see, Jaffe ran a instant message log from a conversation between Adam Orth (a game designer who worked on Twisted Metal:Black, Calling All Cars, and some of the Medal of Honor games) and himself. And yes, in that conversation, Orth said "f**k Halo."

The conversation between the two was sparked by a new Halo 3 advertisement (also run on Kotaku), which the two weren't impressed with. The conversation moved into discussion about game's hype, as well as the game series itself. Of course, most of it was negative.

Jaffe says that he has his "flame suit" on, and invites Halo fans to "do their worst," but surprisingly, the responses are (mostly) readable, and some are even sensible! Who knew?

A tip of the hat to David Jaffe. The guy definitely has big balls to run something like that on his blog. As Microsoft would say, "Jump In" and say your piece.

Hit the jump to read their conversation.

Adam: give me a fucking break:
http://kotaku.com/gaming/tease/the-teaser-for-the-halo-3-teaser-299105.php?autoplay=true

Jaffe: It's a decent add I think. I just don't get HALO. I don't think the story is all that special, don't think the world or characters matter much. I don't know if I am simply not 'getting it' and it really is all that...or Microsoft has simply purchased rabid fan reactions for what is a great game but nothing more.

Adam: that ad is insulting
"belive"?
come on

Jaffe: Am I missing something?
What's insulting about it?

Adam: well, for 1, i think it's disrespectcful to actual veterans of real wars
and 2, they really expect people to become that invested in the halo story?
i guess i just really dislike halo and that ad aint helping

Jaffe: well that's what I mean about buying the hype. I don't dislike Halo at all and really liked parts of Halo 2 alot...I am in minority who felt single player halo 2 was better than halo 1 single player. I mean, I hear people talk about the flood and shit and I'm like: what? Who gives a shit.

Adam: halo = meh

Jaffe: As for disrespect, come on...like Medal of Honor has not been doing he same for a long time. They talk about how important the games are and they are so earnest about it but come on, they are shooters. If they really cared about doing it right, they would give the MOH teams 3 years schedules and make Bioshock meets MOH...in terms of story and character and production value. And they would make THAT the game Spielberg was directing for them.

Adam: respectfully, i'll totally dosagree with you there. MOH games take alot of care to not be disrespectful it's one of the things they do right

JaFFE: While I LOVED MOH:Underground (top 10 games of all time for me) and dug the first one on PS2, emotionally, the most moved I ever was by MOH was with the music and seeing it played likve over a montage of soldiers at Video Games Live.

Adam: well, i guess i have a different insight than you do having sat with veterans and taklked about their experience and how it relates to the games...

Jaffe: It's not an issue of disrespect to the troops. It's an issue of them riding on the sentimentality of people when they talk about how much they care and understand the sacrifice of the soldiers and then put out a sub par shooter that has nothing to do in the play mechanics or design with the sacrifice the soldiers went thru. It's all window dressing that shows either the team doesn't understand how to apply the history 'under the hood' and apply it to the play itself OR it shows that EA does not care about the message at all, and it's all a way to market the game./

ADAM: i agree that most of the finished products veer off from the original intent. it's big problem at EA for MOH

JAFFE: They can cram all the sappy music and interviews with vets on the disc they want...but the game, the product they are actually selling, does not make me feel any closer to the vets sacrifice than any other shooter.
Hey- can I post this discussion on my blog if I don't put your name>?

ADAM: you can post my name...

JAFFE: sweet- sadly it will rile up halo fans...hope they see that I DO LIKE HALO! I just don't get the religious fervor and feel much of the fervor has been purchased by Microsoft. But they'll still hate me

ADAM: fuck halo

JAFFE: well they don't have your name! You can say that! Anyway- ok, gotta go! See ya! And please, for the love of God: LEAVE BRITNEY ALONE!!!!!

ADAM: actaully, i stand by what i said, you can print my name, just leave out "fuck halo"

JAFFE: shit really? Ok.

ADAM: ok, print it
fuck it

JAFFE: cool, you got it.

me, I don't like the Halos - I kept it out of my post, but I'll say here that it is not my cup of tea. Mostly boring and repetitive - of course, nothing I say (or david jaffe) will hinder this month's sales or prevent loyal fans from jumping in.

I have no problem with Halo or its fans, but don't go questioning "those games with all the words" that I like to play ;)

yeah Jaffee. You're the consummate tough guy, the industry "rebel" that you fancy yourself as...

"watch out for JAFFEE! get outta HIS way....he's a LOOSE CANNON!"

we GET IT, fatso. Don't break your wing patting yourself on the back.

Also, how can you say "Adam: well, for 1, i think it's disrespectcful to actual veterans of real wars" when you make MOH games? I mean.. isn't that a little hypocritical? Personally I think COD4 will be better than Halo and MOH.

What the hell is this Adam's problem? Blindside is that you? lol

Seriously, if he can't provide better justification for not liking Halo 3 other than "Fuck Halo" then I don't give a shit about his lame ass opinion.

Since when did game devs fancy themselves into Rock Stars?

I have the utmost respect for devs that make the games I like, but I don't ask them to be opinionated assholes with too much free time on their hands so as to comment on all things games.

Try this one on for size: fuck Halo, fuck God of War, and fuck Twisted Metal, too. I found them all overrated.

And Jaffe needs to be more like Itagaki if he wants to entertain me. He's already got the shit-talking down, now he needs to drink and sexually harass women on the job. Actually, that sounds a lot like Workman.

I agree, fuck Halo. Halo sucks, I hate Halo. But, you know what? There hasn't been a good Medal of Honor since, well, the first one. The rest have been pretty mediocre, so unless that guy who words on the MoH games worked on the first one, he has not right to speak.

At least God of War kicked ass, so Jaffe has some credit when she speaks.

and yes, Jaffe and Itagaki (and maybe Workman) out for drinks and then a drunken blogging session would be absolutely epic.

I really don´t care if they flame Halo, or even pokemon, but if you are not the media, then choosing your words is just common sense.

BTW, MoH shining moment was Allied Assault. There was nothing that cinematic out at the time and it really got me emotional, particularly the beach landing.

Having said that the series has turned into a mediocre mish mash of either trying to do it all and failing or the current airborne being connect-the-dots on the map while claiming originality. It was clear when some of the devs left to form Infinity Ward where all the talent went. At the end of the Normandy landing and taking the town in CoD2 you got treated to Reagans speech from "The boys of Pointe Du Hoc" memorial dedication and I literally had tears streaming down my face. No one at EA seems to be capable of arousing that kind of emotion after two full blown sequels to Allied Assault.

I have my criticisms of the Halo IP but the game is far better than anything that this wanker "Adam" has worked on.

dvddesign - "Seriously, if he can't provide better justification for not liking Halo 3 other than "Fuck Halo" then I don't give a shit about his lame ass opinion"

Note that this was said after Jaffe asked him if he could post the conversation on his blog, so it's fairly safe to say he (meaning Orth, not Jaffe as some people seem to think) said this more to get a rise out of halo fans than anything else.

"I have the utmost respect for devs that make the games I like, but I don't ask them to be opinionated assholes with too much free time on their hands so as to comment on all things games."

This was a private conversation between 2 devs that happened to be posted on a blog. This was hardly pontificating from the mountaintop. I think you are taking this a touch too seriously.

After reading it, Jaffe is more or less DEFENDING Halo from this guy. He's mostly just saying that he doesn't get the hype surrounding it.

Adam on the other hand just sounds jealous of it. I think it's funny how Jaffe even calls him out on his hypocritical "disrespecting the troops/veterans" statement. So apparantly we're not allowed to use fictional veterans in our stories any more?! Do you think they even care?!!

I have always been very up front with my dislike for the Halo series. Unfortunately, I do not know if I will be able to escape the hype on this one. The co-op is enough to make me buy this so my roommate and I can play together. I'm so torn over this game. I'm not sure Conan will be enough to make me not wanna get this.

If COD4 could come early it'd make this a whole lot easier for me, that's for sure, haha. COD4 will rape Halo, I said it here first.

Yeah @ guitar i get the same vibe, jaffe never said it, that adam guy did. Frankly the only thing these ads do is bring out the sense of heros in wars, which while not a vet myself, can actually immagine people appreciating. The medal of honor games have never had an engaging story which gives ANY soilder respect. Why is it more people are shocked with aeris dying, than when a soilder dies in any of these historical war pieces. They should make a ww2 game like gow or a game with real squad ai in which when you grow attatched to your men and your team, and they die they stay dead, no reloading no second chances, hell you could make it where you have chance to bring em back when they go down but if you dont make it in time thats it. just my opinion as a way to respect the people who lose friends in those situacions.

You're overreaching a bit in my opinions. I honestly don't care about the meat of their opinion, I just tire of game devs believing that because they have a hit or two that they're a big wig.

I think out of all the devs I've ever seen, Miyamoto and Mizuguchi are the most deserving to be public assholes, yet they aren't. Miyamoto's known to be a massive control freak and perfectionist, but in public you'd never know.

Fair enough. For some reason I felt the need to (God help me) defend Jaffe.

It always amazes me when people criticize celebrities or politicians or game devs or whatever that they aren't entitled to their opinions for reasons x y or Z, and yet fail to understand that their target is no more or less entitled then they are. Not saying you feel this way or not, I just caught a whiff of it and went after it.

I've never really been that interested in halo, but I do think that every one is entitled to their own opinion, and I don't think there's anything wrong with not liking something that you don't like. I played the h3 beta and didn't think it was really all that amazing, but I'm not judging it until I have an actual copy of the game.

Some people seem to forget that game devs are gamers, too. Here I see nothing more than I see every day at D-toid - Gamers expressing their opinions. There's nothing all that controvertial here, nor is there anything we haven't seen a hundred times before.

That said, I'm with Jaffe on this one. I played Halo 1 and 2, and a bit of multiplayer on both, and I just don't get it. Maybe it's the simplicity of it that's attractive to people?

Medal of Honor dev complaining about Halo being generic and disrespectful to veterans. WOW.

His series trivialized WII and turned it into a game, and he says a Halo ad is disrespectful to veterans? Even if you want to make that logical leap (and it's a big one), you've done it in an even more blatant way. Pot meet kettle.

I'm kind of meh on Halo myself, so I kind of agree with them, but this MOH thing is just hilarious to me. Way to make yourself look like a total prick.

Wow. That's like a high school art student talking shit about Picasso. Not saying Halo's perfect, but who ever thought the MoH series would ever be anything like Halo in terms of "fun"? Even if you don't like Halo much, would you really rather play a MoH game over it? Same rehash bullshit. Bungie at least tries to mix some stuff into their games.

They practically invented the dual stick controls, they made the best online matchmaking on any console (virtual couch), and they're shoving so much shit into Halo 3's multiplayer I can't even keep up with announcements.

What's the new feature in the new one? Oh, that's right. Drop from a parachute. Yeah, that's cute. Halo actually tries to mix things up with all kinds of things and the only MoH change is "you can drop from a parachute." Get the fuck out of my house with that shit! Go somewhere, hoe snack!
