First SW:TOR documentary reveals some combat, Jedi swing fast [Update] photo

The most exciting thing about Star Wars the Old Republic is the fact that LucasArts and BioWare are both actively working on the project. The video above is the first documentary for the game. The developers spend a great deal of time talking about story elements, choice and the process of making a wicked rad MMO. The most revealing portion of this documentary isn’t the audio – it is the pre-production footage of the game in action.

You can really get a sense of the choreographed fighting mechanic that BioWare was talking about when the game was first announced. With lightsaber combat, it seems to focus around wild flourishes and fancy Jedi footwork. The speed of combat is actually fairly surprising. The dueling scenes seem hectic, but also very characteristic of George Lucas’ vision of Star Wars combat.

What do you guys think of the combat footage? Are you digging what BioWare has to say about the choices and companion characters?

[Update: The video has been placed after the break. The content is good, but it autoplays.]

I don't have alot of faith for this game. I am already seeing thousands of worthless Jedis running around. Everyone can't be a Jedi in the Star Wars universe otherwise it is not Star Wars. I hate the art style too. Did we really need another MMO, especially a Star Wars one?

So basically it's a new single player KotoR minus saves and with PvP after you finish the main plot. Sounds OK I guess.

Combat just looks like KotoR with more animations, which isn't terrible either.

Nothing says awesome like a few hundred thousand Jedi all running around killing womprats and mynocks to level up. Even if Bioware/Lucas makes non-Jedi classes, how can they ever hope to stack up against Jedi in PVP?

The idea of choices in an MMO sound whoaaaaaaa at first, but once this is out, everyone will know exactly which to make in order to max out their crits for pvp'ing, eliminating all mystery and fun out of the process.

Can something be not online for once, or at least break the MMO mold (not spraypaint the WoW mold a different color)?

Yeah, I really want to be excited about this game. To be honest when I first heard the MMO thing, my heart sank three feet into the ground. Being a fan of KOTOR and not of MMO's in general is a recipe for heartache. I'll be paying attention regardless...

If they have player towns this will be my new home. Heck even if they don't this is looking better and better all the time. The character style is different then I expected, but I could live with it and the combat looks fun. All in all I'm starting to have hope for this game.

Lol such cynicism. I'm definitely buying this because I enjoyed KOTOR I and II and I want to see where the story goes. If the online MMO part is good then I might even cut down on WoW time to keep playing.

And since they already said Jedi and Sith are not the only classes, I'm hoping for some Mandalorian, Bounter Hunter, and maybe even some Han Solo-esque Smuggler/Scoundrel classes.

if the combat is more action oriented ala mass effect and less pseudo real time like WoW and other MMOs out there, this could be the game that gets me back into MMOs.

I think it's looking pretty awesome. Early, but awesome. This could be the one MMO to actually hook me.

@mrsatan
In that time period (which is pretty much considered canon and was not created by this game) there were a shit load of Jedi. Hell even when Vader was a child there were a shit load of Jedi. How is that not Star Wars?

looks like a step backwards from mass effect to me.

either way, wether it's good or bad i won't be playing it, or any other MMO game.

I don't think they need to make non-Jedi classes. Remember KotOR? You became a Jedi and THEN there were like 3 jedi Classes, i just think they need to expand on those jedi classes and combined with dark/light side(different force powers for each side?) you have all the classes you need in an Old Republic Star Wars MMO.

Star Wars just doesn't work for a MMO. No matter how well you make it.

For the Sith, there is the rule of 2. One Master, One Apprentice.

And, The Jedi only number in the hundreds at best.

You make a MMO, and suddenly there are 3,000,000 Jedi and Sith running around. It's no longer Star Wars. And, if you take away Jedi and Sith as playable classes to make the game truer to the source, then all the whiny little fanboys will bitch and refuse to play it.

@ Knyte
The rule of 2 wasn't enacted in the timeframe of Kotor/ToR. Darth Revan made a holocron with the basis of the info, and thus it was found by Darth Bane years and years and years later.

Also, if you played Kotor, you'd know that there are Jedi and Sith Academys, training new force users everyday.

I'm genuinely excited for this game, but we'll see how the Jedi/Sith work out. I bet it'll be like, "Do ____ mission to unlock". Yeah...

I am really hoping this turns out great. I would hate for Bioware to be wasting their time and talent, so far it looks like they are using it well though. Graphics look impressive for an MMO with as much time as they have to work with it and the combat did look really cool like they claim. And yeah, can't name a bad Bioware game, if this is the first I'll be very disappointed.

This could be really badass... but i'm just curious, how is the choreographed fighting going to work if it's a bigger battle than 1v1... will it only be choreographed with your target, and everyone else just beats on you like other MMOs? And what if you have a party beating on a single mob, how well can that be fit in to the choreography? I don't care either way, I don't mind the typical MMO fight mechanics, I'm just curious.

Also, I watched this without the audio, so if they explained it... my apologies.
